Subject: LILO in MBR; primary partition for WIndows?
Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 02:19:51 GMT

I am about to partition my HD for a Linux and Win98 dual boot system, and
would like some thoughts on two questions:

I plan to primarily boot Linux. I will also need to have Win98, primarly for
a few apps that I need for work related issues. Mostly, I am hoping to be
able to boot Win98 under VMWare, but am planning to put it in its own
partition in case I need to boot it without having Linxu under it as well.

My questions:

1. I have seen a lot of posts indicating that in dual-boot configurations,
one should NOT put lilo into the MBR; however, from information in the lilo
sources, it seems that lilo in the MBR CAN boot a windows partition as well.
Is there any reason why I cannot let lilo install to the MBR and use the
"other" keyword to boot the win98 partition?

2. Does windows98 require itself to be in a primary partition, or will it
work properly if i install it to a logical partition?

Thanks.
Neal

That's because the "ppa" you're using is *not* an RPM in and of itself,
it's a kernel module. The ppa module is included in all stock RedHat
installs since about 6.0, and it should be located in
/lib/modules/$KERNELVERSION/scsi/ppa.o . If it didn't exist, you would
not see the error messages from "insmod" that you got.

First, use "modprobe" instead of "insmod" in most cases. modprobe looks
in /etc/modules.conf and /lib/modules/$KERNELVERSION/modules.dep to see
if the module you're loading requires another module to be loaded first,
then loads that module if it can. ppa support requires that the modules
for Parallel Port, PC-Style Parallel Ports, and Line Printer Support be
loaded. THese modules are also called "parport", "parport_pc", and
"lp".

Finally, please note that ppa is only useful for older ZIP drives.
Newer ZIP drives use imm. Once the module is loaded, the ZIP drive
should appear as /dev/sda, and you can mount DOS-formatted ZIP disks on
/dev/sda4 and Macintosh-formatted ZIP disks on /dev/sda (with filesystem
type "hfs", naturally.)

Are you running the SCSI core and parallel port drivers as modules, or
compiled into the kernel? I found that with ppa as a module, and scsi
compiled into the kernel, it would not work. It looks like the
dependency problem is with the parallel port driver. If you have this
compiled as a module, you could always try 'modprobe ppa.o' rather than
insmod. This will load all the modules ppa depends on if not loaded
prior to loading ppa itself, if they aren't already running.

I can't see what difference getting the newest driver source would make
if you are running a recent kernel. The ppa-based zip drives are no
longer being made, anyway; all newish parallel port zip drives use the
imm driver. However, if you had one of these, it just would just not
detect a drive. However you might try imm.o also if nothing else works.

Subject: Missing libgd.so.1(linuxconf)& "not signed" Cups package
Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 03:12:14 GMT

I used the icon on drafeconf to go to the Mandrake ftp site for
upgrades to lm 7.2, primarily to get the final KDE 2.0. Used
the "normal updates" and got a list of app's that have also been
updated since I purchased the retail package 2 weeks ago. Most of them
directly affected the version I purchased so I downloaded and installed
most of them. I then ran into TWO major problems, which I can't quite
figure out the cause nor answer for.

There was an significant upgrade for Linuxconf which I downloaded. Upon
installing it gave me a error "libgd.so.1 missing" and gave me an
option of force or cancel. I choose force and now I cannot get
Linuxconf to run at all. HOW is this possible? Since Linuxconf is such
a major component of lm7.2, it obviously is crucial that it is able to
run. What happened and how can it be fixed (VERY HIGH PRIORITY!!!!!)

There was also a significant upgrade for the Cups package 1.1.4.-
7.1mdk which I downloaded. Upon installation it gave an error stating
that the package cannot be upgraded because it is not signed. ??????
Don't have a clue..... What is going on? AND what can be done to fix it?

NOTE: FYI,I looked at the description of every file on the "upgrade
list" from the site and saw that there was a upgrade for Rpmdrake. It
was worded rather stongly that because there were problems with
packages in the past, this should be downloaded and installed asap.
This was the first download and install that I did.

Thank you and I hope to hear from anyone shortly. Please.... I think I
remember seeing something about both these issues on forums sometime
back but I have tried and cannot locate it.

Also, since the "upgrade" now when I use the Gnome desktop, it tells me
that the aRts soundserver is not running/started. Does anyone have any
thoughts/ideas on this? Thanks again.

Here is a link for burning a redhat CD. You didn't mention what kind of
iso you want to burn.

http://imsb.au.dk/~mok/linux/doc/RedHat-CD.html

You might also want to take a look at xcdroast.

Actually I do start gpm in my initscripts. I didn't before, but I
reset it before posting. The problem is that even when gpm is running
(and I check using ps ax | grep gpm) I can't use my mouse as a user.
If I log in as root, with gpm running, all is well. When I log in as
user, no mouse under mc. I get an error message in /var/log/messages
indicating that I am not permitted to /dev/gpmctl.

Does this help to explain?

Yes, linux will run on a 386/486 though 16 MB of memory is needed for
the newer distro's.

You got the cable hooked up from the cdplayer to the sound card? Did you turn

To be correct, you should mention that the newer "standard"
distributions nowadays always require a Pentium+ class CPU and you
have to download or order a 486 class distribution separately, at
least for distros like RedHat, SuSe or Mandrake.
I'm not sure if one of those "Linux on a floppy" distros have lower
CPU requirements, otherwise you have at least not much of a chance to
get a 386 running with Linux these days. At least i doubt that you get
a 2.4 kernel running on these....

This fpt site is also a very good place to download Linux CD iso.

ftp.linuxberg/pub/ISO

Gcombust is also a very good frontend program for burning CDs

I am using Debian/GNU 2.2. I paraphrased the error message in my original post.
I corrected it to the exact message. Wvdial sounds familiar, not sure if it's
there
and configured, but it might be listed in dselect.
