I bought the Corel LINUX about 4 months ago. I tried installing it and
configuring it through dualboot but all it managed to do was replace my
bootup files. Thankfully we were able to save all my data (I was stupid
enough not to back up!), I haven't tried since for fear of repeating my
dilemma. I have also been swamped with studying but I feel learning how to
use LINUX could help my credibility as a computer science student. Any help
in this regard would be greatly appreciated, I am desparate to learn how to
use LINUX!
Please Help!

MY guess is that RH knows nothing about the maintenance light, so doesn't
know how to drive it ptoperly...

No flame intended, but you're using some decent hardware, so why not use the
real OS that was designed for it?

I recently installed the latest version of gnome and now when the
computer boots, the following appears right after entering
non-interactive start up
nohup: appending output to nohup.out
(repeat three times)
When I look at /nohup.out the following is there:
/bin/nice: ./scan.sh: no such file or directory
/bin/nice: ./hackl.sh: no such file or directory
/bin/nice: ./hackw.sh: no such file or directory
Does anyone know where this is coming from.
As a result, my lpd keeps failing as well. I uninstalled it and
reinstalled it and was able to print, but then it mysterioulsy stopped
working. When I try to manually start it it gives me the usage message.
Also, in /usr/sbin, there is an 0byte lpd file without execute
permission. I have to execute /etc/rc.d/init.d/lpd to even get any
output.
(I should have never messed with my system! Everything was running fine)
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
ThankYou

Greetings all:
I have ppp dial up working (as root) in KDE and by typing ppp-go (
using slackware 7.0). I have tried using ppp as another user (non root)
and it does not seem to work. All of the docs talk about using the
SAME files i.e.; chat, ppp-options...etc. After reading and thinking
about it, it dawned on me that ppp might not be multi-user. I am on a
stand a lone box with no network card; only a dial-up connection. Just
wondering...

Thanks for the help David. I did what you said and everything checks
out ok. BUT, I'm still not getting the eth0 line in my dmesg, which
AFAIK is a clear sign that the network card recognized... I tried
pinging myself and it just goes on forever which I thought was a good
thing, but maybe not. WHat, if any, is the definitive sign that a
network card has been recognized?
Thanks

Subject: Mounting DOS/WIN partitions under Linux
Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 19:35:04 GMT
Hi all,
I just completed an installation of Red Hat Linux 6.1 on my system and
have run into a bit of a snag and was hoping someone might be able to
give me a hand.
I have 3 hard drives and one removable drive on my system, (all SCSI).
The first two hard drives are devoted to Linux and the last drive and
removable are fat partitioned. I have two fat partitions on the 3rd hard
drive and 1 fat partition on the removable drive.
Now for my question, how do I get Linux to recognize the fat partitions
on my 3rd hard drive and my removable so I can browse the partitions and
access the files on them? I looked in all my books and found subtle
hints, but nothing that provides me with stright answers on how to
accomplish this.
Any help of information would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

Newbie question !!!!
I am trying to configure mail such that I can execute a command like:
ifconfig | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I am setting my my linux machine as an FTP server and would like to have the
the current IP address when ever I re-boot. I dont have a static IP
address. I configured the GUI mail client in KDE and it sends and recives
mail with no problems. When I use the command line version of mail (see
line above), nothing happens. The command retruns, but no mail is ever
sent. I am guess thing there is an config file or something where I must
record my ISP mail servers address.
OS: Read Hat 7.0

I used the Debian `make-kpkg' and `dpkg' tools to build and install

OK, first about the 2.4.0 kernel. I did:
make mrproper
make xconfig
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
On modules_install it gives an error saying that "--F is an invalid
option for /sbin/depmod" (not exact phrasing). I'm running
Mandrake 7.0.. is my depmod too old or is it something else?
And I'm trying to get my cable modem to work.. However, there
is no /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file :( I'm pretty
sure that I have the ethernet card installed properly (lothar says
so). I have created a ifcfg-eth0 file by myself, but i'm obviously
missing something as "ifup eth0" doesn't do anything. I've also
modified the /etc/HOSTNAME, /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts and
/etc/sysconfig/network (i'm following a guide)
Please excuse me if this has been asked before....

Subject: Clock problem.
Date: 21 Jan 2001 19:00:43 -0000
Hi
Can anyone point me in the right direction to solve this problem please:
If I do a soft reboot after:
/sbin/clock -u -w
The hardware clock is reset to 1st Jan 1996 00:00:00
If I do not execute (the write with or without -u) then there is no
problem.
On startup the command:
/sbin/clock -u -s
Is run.
The file /etc/adjtime has no effect on this action, whether it be there or
not.
The file /usr/lib/zoneinfo/GMT is copied to /etc/localtime during the
shutdown sequence although this does not appear to at all relevant.
It also does not appear to matter whether I do a soft reboot or completely
power down the machine.
It does not appear to be a battery or CMOS problem. The battery voltage is
OK and, curiosly the earliest time the CMOS may be set to is 1st Jan 1994.
I have searched /etc and compared files before and after executing commands
and rebooting and I cannot find anything that could cause this.
It does not appear to be a problem due to /sbin/clock adjust options
firstly because it does not depend on /etc/adjtime and secondly because the
hardware clock is always set to the same time (almost like a reset).
The whole thing is driving me nuts >;(
Can anybody suggest where I might next look to solve this.
Any help is welcome. TIA.

Hi,
I just upgraded to slackware7.1 from an old slackware installation.
I am trying to get my sound working (on an HP pavilion 7420).
I wrote a script which does: insmod soundcore
insmod soundlow
insmod sound
insmod uart401
insmod sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
After I run this script then "play test.au" works, and all the Gnome
system sounds can be heard. The problem is when I try to play a CD
there is no sound. Ive tried workman, workbone, and the Gnome and KDE
players without success. Any ideas what the problem might be? (The CD
is being read from. The kight is on. Workman displays the correct number
of CD tracks, etc. But there is no sound.)
Thanks for any help

When you boot Linux with your install CD, you may start in a rescue mode
by writing linux rescue..
This "rescue-partiton" is probably only a device in memory with the
necessary files
to rescue your real partition.
>

well.. my bad... i wrote the wrong line in my message...
1. Boot linux with 'linux rescue'
2. When the prompt is ready:
- mkdir /mnt/hd
- mount /dev/hdax /mnt/hd (exchange hdax with your linux partition..
eg.. hda2)
3. enter the /mnt/hd/etc directory (on your mounted linux partion)
4. edit the lilo.conf file to point to the last kernel that works
5. copy the lilo.conf file to the memory created rescue partition /etc
6. run lilo from the sbin?? directory
- lilo -r /mnt/hd (this will write the boot to the real hd-partition)
7. Reboot

In answer to the first question, since that is the indication I've
always received on the later kernels when I've neglected to upgrade
modutils, I'd say yes.

I use 6.2 and due to previous experiences with x.0 versions 5.0 & 6.0
and all the bugs, I won't be downgrading to 7.0 since I don't want a
system that isn't as stable as what I have now. I don't know what they
have done to create all the problems with 7.0 that so many people are
having. My previous post works for 6.2 but I guess 7.0 is setup
different, not counting the bugs, so I will have to let someone else
that has 7.0 try to help.
A couple of things to check would be, that the network is configured
properly, to see that the module exists, to see if there is a
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 script that exists something
like this.
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static
IPADDR=192.168.1.1
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
ONBOOT=yes
Or maybe like this:
DEVICE=eth0
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=none
BROADCAST=192.168.1.255
NETWORK=192.168.1.0
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
IPADDR=192.168.1.1
USERCTL=no
If they included "netcfg" in 7.0 and you are running X it gives a GUI to
help. If not running X then "ifconfig" can be used if they included it
in 7.0.
Best of luck.

Subject: Stupid directory permission question
Date: 21 Jan 2001 20:55:04 GMT
I'm sure this is an incredibly stupid (or at least frequently asked)
question, but I can't figure out why this isn't working.
I am working on setting up a fax server, which will accept print jobs
via lpd and let users manage them with a web interface. I have created
a directory, /var/spool/fax/outqueue, which needs to be writeable by
both my lpd filter (which runs as lp) and my CGI program (which runs as
apache).
I've created a new group, faxserv, and made both apache and lp members
of faxserv. Here are the permissions of the directory tree:
[root@localhost /]# ls -ld /var /var/spool /var/spool/fax
/var/spool/fax/outqueue
drwxr-xr-x 21 root root 1024 Oct 19 10:06 /var
drwxr-xr-x 11 root root 1024 Sep 28 19:14 /var/spool
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 1024 Jan 19 19:17 /var/spool/fax
drwxrwxr-x 2 root faxserv 1024 Jan 21 14:16
/var/spool/fax/outqueue
Despite all this, I still get a "permission denied" error when my lpd
filter attempts to write to /var/spool/fax/outqueue.
What am I missing? Thanks!

Read 'man pppd'. Some Linux distros (and Kppp) have methods to allow
users to start/stop pppd if set up to allow that. For example linuxconf
or netcfg in RH and Mandrake have a checkbox to allow user access.
For others it may work to simply set the pppd program suid root so it can
be started by certain users (depending upon group and other permission),
but will run as root. Certain files in /ppp can only be readable by root,
like pap-secrets or chap-secrets. But as long as pppd is running as root,
that is not a problem.
