Are you booting up from the RH7 cd or trying to upgrade while 6.2 is
running? Boot up your computer with the RH7 cd and go from there.

Here's something I forgot - the Compaq cards are EISA, and I'm wondering if
maybe the tlan.o module only supports PCI? That would really suck.

Why not? The problem must be personal because root can do anything.

Vi wil let ou do anything. There is no such thing as a "system file"!
What do you mean? If vi tells you that it's a readonly file, just insist,
with ":w!" . If the problem is that your root partition is mounted
readonly, remount it readwrite with "mount -wno remount /" .

But please make yourself clear.

You can chmod just fine: "chmod +rw /etc/fstab". Report error messages
precisely please!

What problem?

What is it? You haven't been clear. I imagine your root partition is
mounted reqadonly.

I have this old 85mb hd and I wanted to know which distro or something I
could to install....

I have linux myself..and I plan to mount this 85mb hd into my Athlon linux
and install linux package and stuff to that drive...umount 85mb hd... and
unplug it and go over to my 386computer with 8mb ram..install HD and boot it
there...

any ideas?

I wanted to use 386 as firewall/masq that has none of the unnecessary
package unrelated to its intented purpose...except support for telnet (of
course)

this 386 has nothing connected to motherboard except cpu/ram/ide
card/ethernet(2)/old old old videocard (I think its pre EGA...color is
broken) and connector for keyboard

Hi all,

I have tried to rebuild a kernel that comes with the RH 6.2 distrib.
(2.2.14-6.1) I do make config, make dep, make bzImage but during making
the image make reports three errors in /usr/src/linux/lib (controll
count error or something like this) I tried a 2.2.16 kernel but got the
same result. Does anybody knows what could be wrong?

Thanks

You can remove NFS services safely. Sounds like your running Redhat 7.
Just remove the links referring to nfs and nfslock in the
/etc/rc.d/rc[n].d directory, where n is the appropriate runlevel 3-5.

I don't think "inetd -d" by itself logs. You can try to set up logging
for it in /etc/syslog.conf (man 5 syslog.conf).

If this is just a problem for user jbond, you should be able to simply
delete the entire ~/.kde directory, and then log back into KDE. It will
be as if you logged into it for the first time.

You may have to enter the setserial command in an rc.local so it runs

The compiler? The kernel source? All of the above?

If your redhat kernel doesn't compile with redhat's compiler, then
complain to redhat - after first having got any relevant errata, of
course!

I'd get fresh kernel source and try that, so that you eliminate one
possible cause.

Are you using LILO or LOADLIN to boot the kernel? I had to use LILO to
boot the
2.4 kernel. My 2.4 kernel bzImage is 1064400bytes, the 2.4-test12 kernel
bzImage
was 1023234bytes and booted fine with LOADLIN.

Yes. Upgrade before. But that does not answer why it does not boot, as
the required upgrades only have effect when the kernel has booted; and
it stops before that...

Try to exchange 'gcc' with 'kgcc' everywhere in 'Makefile'.

Btw. the kernel does not link to glibc and therefore a glibc upgrade
should not be necessary. Glibc is what lies between userspace programs
and the kernel.

You can get "Partition Magic or System Commander" (windows programs) for
booting multiple OS's instead of LILO. I prefer Partition Magic FWIW.

You don't say what kernel you are using and I didn't see it in your
headers; anyway - the 2.2.18 kernel with Hedricks patch (go to /people
at the linux ftp site) dated 12/21 works very well. I'm rather opposed
to using the 2.4.0 on anything but a stand alone box right now.

I've got 2 hdd, but only one of them partitioned. Both win98 and linux
are on the primary master, which is a maxtor 15GB drive. win98 uses a 8gb
partition, then there is a 16MB /boot partition for linux, then / uses 3.5
GB, /home uses 3GB, then linux swap uses 256MB.

There are also 2 CDROMs.

the disks are connected like this
Primary Master: Maxtor HDD
Primary slave: Memorex CDRW/DVD
Secondary Master: Fujitsu HDD
Secondary slave: CD-ROM

When all disks are recognized by BIOS, no windows boot disks work, and
selecting to boot win/dos from LILO hangs as well. Specifically, the
floppy drive is spun (no normal 'reading sounds' though) and the access
light comes on. The the hard drive light comes on, the floppy light goes
off, and the system hangs with the hdd light on.

However, when I remove the Maxtor HDD from the BIOS (ie select 'none'
instead of 'HDD') the windows boot disks all work. (of course I can't
access the maxtor to restore the MBR).

Also, when I try to boot from the win98 CD, same thing happens. CD spins,
hdd light comes on, cd spins down, and system hangs...

Thanks for all your helpful suggestions...
