I am a newbie for Linux. I install win2k and Redhat7.0 on the same hard
disk.
There are three partitions for my Redhat:
/hdc3(/);
/hdc5(urs);
/hdc3(swap);
and I install LILO in /hdc3, which is 2400 MB and locates from 8.5 GB to
10.7 GB of my hard disk; My first and second partitions are C: and D:, they
are 3.84 GB and 4.87 GB respectively. Can I boot my Redhat from hard disk?
How can I do?
Any information will be grateful, for I really don't what to boot from
floppy.
Regards!

I use a USR Sportster fax/data modem 56k. It's an ISA device with
jumpers on it so you can configure the actual card to be
non-Plug-'n-Pray. I found all the documentation I needed at the USR
website. If you follow the instructions for Win3.1, everything goes
well.

I think any external modem should work, too. G.

Having managed to get the gnome screensaver to switch off my screen
after a few minutes of activity, I found myself without any way to
switch it back on without power cycling the whole laptop. I had hoped
that hitting keyboard keys would do the trick, since it was supposedly
only the screen that was off, not the keyboard/CPU.

I'm using a Sony Viao PCG-Z505LS. In general, how does one get the
darn thing out of a suspend state? I have tried momentarily sliding
the power switch, but this doesn't seem to do anything.

Lots of howto's at www.linuxdoc.org, it DOES have one on RAID! RAID is farily
easy to do in Linux. linuxdoc should answer all of your questions.

I try to change the graphical adapter using Xconfigurator I receive an error
'Server doesn't exist, can't continue try to use

from what I understand , @home att cable requires a special name to be
given to the computer - which allows it to contact @home's dhcp server
and get the IP address
On Linux, how
a) do I configure the name for the machine
b) how do I configure it to act as a dhcp client

I have been using ATA/66 for over a year with a vt686 controller chip (VIA).
Linux had support for ATA/100 before Windows! Most of the newer distributions
shouldn't have much trouble with ATA/66 or ATA/100 (do some research on the
chipset you are interested in though, to see if there are any problems)

The reason for this is that the HPT370 uses Software RAID, the software is in
Windows, therefore Linux isn't using it. You can set up RAID (for Linux
partitions) on any drives that Linux can see. I don't believe it is going to
be possible to see the Windows RAID partitions because (I have no doubt) the
windows software does things differently than the Linux software (superblock
kind of thing).

Eric,

I've read the information about the /boot should be entirely below cyl. 1024.
But this was not my problem at that time. The problem was that DiskDruid would
not create the Linux Native partition. While fdisk does (problem solved).
I'm not all that familiour with lilo and stuff. But it seems that LILO versions
are available which can boot from cylinders 1024+. Otherwise I will try to
substitute my windows 2000 multi boot by lilo, which should also be possible.
i.e.: install LILO on /dev/hda1 instead of /dev/hdb6.

As I said, I'm not an expert with this and the part about the NTFS partitions is
something I read somewhere. And as I have had problems installing LILO before,
which was also in combination with (maybe not caused by) NTFS partitions, it
seemed reasonable to me that it had something to do with that. Okay, so I was
wrong!!!

Thanks for the info!!

Dennis.

Hello,

on a linux 2.2.16 system I want to limit the number of processes, a certain
user can run. With an interactive user, I could achieve this by running
"ulimit -u xxxx" in the users' .profile or .bashrc. But in this case, the user
is non-interactive and the processes I want to limit are spawned by an apache
webserver via suExec mechanism - no .profile / no .bashrc.

How can this be solved?

I have a Symantec SYM 53C416 SCSI scanner card, but during bootup
I get the following message:

Setting up ISA PNP devices: Board 1 has Identity 62 ff ff ff ff

I have 2 PNP cards. Board 2 is a 16-bit Sound Blaster. Although
I couldn't play the test sound during installation my sounds all work
ok, so I'm guessing this message is about the SCSI card(?)
I recompiled my kernel to add generic SCSI support and tried
again with my scanner switched on, but still the same message. Could
it be something simple in isapnp.conf? I notice that 'device supports
I/O range check register' is commented out...
     TIA.

In that case its possible that linux-conf has set up entries in
conf.modules that 3c9059.o cannot read.

In my setup (RH6.2 with 3c509.o) this was the case. Linux-conf added
two lines to conf.modules. both starting with 'alias eth0'. The
solution (from RH support) was to edit the 'alias eth0' prefix off the
second line (leaving something looking like 'options blah blah') and
then to append that to the first line. The vi 'J' command does exactly
the right thing here.

This fixed the problem for me, but YMMV.

if both / and swap are on hdc3, your system wont work for a very long

read the NTloader+linux howto.

Don't forget to add the lba32 option to the lilo.conf file.

Alternatively you can put LILO in the MBR as your main bootloader.

Wouldn't do that. You can put in the MBR (/dev/hda) but don't touch
hda1.
The NT bootcode is there (I suspect, I'm no NT guru).

The March 2001 issue of Personal Computer World (UK magazine) has a
great review of the MESH 850. The spec is:

AMD Duron @ 850 MHz
128 MB SDRAM
30 GB HD
17" Philips FST monitor
32 MB nVIDIA GeForce2 MX graphics card
16x DVD-ROM
Creative Labs Soundblaster PCI 128
56k modem

all for 856 inc. VAT.

There are also options for an AMD Athlon 900 MHz processor and a CD-RW.

Would this be a suitable machine to install Linux on?
