There is an installation discussion at the linuxnewbies.org site under
"installation help" then generic installation help or something like
that. It talks about some of the things we have talked about here. The
100 megs of swap is sort of an industry guideline for several recsons.
The first is anything above that is rarely needed and secondly, and more
importantly, there is a larger risk of the system thrashing, or spending
too much time swapping in and out than is actually worth it.

Paul, are you familiar with the modprobe and depmod commands and the
options? Take a look at the man pages on them. They can give you some
info and power to find and correct the modules and dependency problems.

Jens, that command may be "lilo -P" . Check the man pages on it.

Subject: Network Card Setup
Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 23:17:49 GMT
Folks,
I am having a terrible time with my Linux box seeing the network. I
have a
small network with another Linux box and a Sun Sparc2 (yes it is
ancient and
very, very slow) and I am trying to set up another Linux box on an old
486
all into the same hub on the network. I am using Mandrake 7.2 as I did
with
the other machine that works fine the only difference is that I am being
very selective about the packages I am installing because it only has a
400
MB hdd. I need it to have apache, php, mysql and samba. It is
essentially
a development and testing machine. However, I cannot see any thing
from it.
The light on the network card comes on and flickers, but the light on
the
hub does not. Is this a hardware issue or something else? Did I
inadvertently not install some crucial component? I am really at a
loss.
The network settings are exactly the same on the two machines (except
the
IP) but the second one doesn't work.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Andrew

Subject: Suspend in ASUS A7V?
Date: 26 Jan 2001 23:59:28 GMT
Hello!
Excuse my poor english. I hope you can understand me.
I have an ASUS A7V motherboard with an AMD Athlon.
The suspend function doesn't work, when I push the power button (less than
4 seconds) or type (as root) apm -s then I hear three shorts beeps and the
monitor go DPMS-OFF, but the CPU doesn't enter the suspend mode and after that
I can't wake up the computer (I move the mouse and I also press some keys, but
the monitor continues in DPMS OFF) and I have to restart it.
I have the apmd daemon running, but I see nothing in the systems logs when I
enter in suspend mode. When apmd starts I see the following lines in
/var/log/messages:
Jan 21 22:55:41 sol apmd[180]: Version 2.4 (APM BIOS 1.2, Linux driver 1.13)
Jan 21 22:55:41 sol apmd[180]: Battery: * * * (-1% 0:01)
In /proc/apm:
% cat /proc/apm
1.13 1.2 0x03 0x01 0xff 0x80 -1% -1 ?
I have a 2.2.18 kernel with the following options:
CONFIG_APM=y
# CONFIG_APM_IGNORE_USER_SUSPEND is not set
# CONFIG_APM_DO_ENABLE is not set
# CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE is not set
# CONFIG_APM_DISPLAY_BLANK is not set
# CONFIG_APM_RTC_IS_GMT is not set
# CONFIG_APM_ALLOW_INTS is not set
# CONFIG_APM_REAL_MODE_POWER_OFF is not set
# CONFIG_TOSHIBA is not set
In the BIOS Setup I have:
Power Management: Min. Saving
Video Off OPtion: Suspend -> Off
Video Off Method: DPMS OFF
HDD Power Down: 15 min.
Suspend-to-RAM Capabyility: DISABLED
Suspend Mode: 40 min.
PWR Button < 4 secs: Suspend
Do you know what's wrong?
Thank you very much for your attention!

Subject: Cannot configure bootable RAID on redhat!! PLEASE help!
Date: Sat, 27 Jan 2001 00:16:45 GMT
Hi there,
I'm trying to install RedHat 7.0 on a HP NetServer E 50 with dual
4.2Gb SCSI drives, and configure the two drives as a RAID 1 array.
I've done a full install about eight times now, and have come pretty
close. The docs didn't always seem to reflect what I was experiencing
... :(
Anyway, now I'm stuck, so near yet so far (beginning another fresh
install as I write). Please help!
The bottom line is that I can reboot with the RAID mounted but then
the system drops me to a shell and hasn't mounted anything else, not
even /proc ... ? See below for the full story.
I could REALLY use some help! Three days on this now!
Thanks,
Nick
Here it is:
Following the instructions at
http://redhat.com/support/docs/tips/raid/RAID-4.html and at
http://redhat.com/support/docs/tips/raid/RAID-2.35.html, which seem to
fill in each other's blanks mostly, if not completely, I have:
sda1 23Mb /boot Linux native
sda5 203Mb Linux swap
sda6 3835Mb Raid000 Linux RAID
sdb1 203Mb / Linux native
sdb5 23Mb /boot2 Linux native
sdb6 3835Mb Raid001 Linux RAID
when I leave the Disk Druid partition screen.
In LILO Configuration I install the bootloader in the MBR since I plan
to move the contents of /boot to /boot2 later (right?).
In the next screen it says that /dev/sdb1 (only) will be bootable as
'linux' ...
I continue with the installation, and as I understand it, all the
packages and stuff are installed in / on /dev/sdb1 (right?)
At the end, I reboot. All good. System restarts and I log on.
root# df -k
/dev/sdb1 202220 /
/dev/sda1 23302 /boot
/dev/sdb5 23302 /boot2
so I try to follow the instructions:
root# cat /etc/raidtab
raiddev 1
raid-level 1
nr-raid-disks 2
nr-spare-disks 0
chunk-size 4
device /dev/sda6
raid-disk 0
device /dev/sdb6
raid-disk 1
root# mkraid --really-force /dev/md0
[ ... ]
sdb6 [events: 00000001](write) sdb6's sb offset: 3927744
sda6 [events: 00000001](write) sda6's sb offset: 3927744
.
root# mkfs /dev/md0
[ ... ]
writing superblocks and filesystem accounting information : done
root# mkdir /raidtmp
root# mount /dev/md0 /raidtmp
nr_blocks changed to 32 (blocksize 4096, j694496, max_blocks 981936)
^----is that okay?
Anyway, I can see /raidtmp mounted on /dev/md0 in df, and I can chdir
to it ..., so I:
root# tar cf - ./bin ./dev ./etc ./home ./lib ./misc ./mnt ./root
/sbin ./tmp ./usr ./var | (cd /raidtemp; tar xf -)
tar: ./dev/log: socket ignored
root# mkinitrd /boot/initrd-raid1.img --with raid1 2.2.16-22
root# cat /etc/lilo.conf
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
linear
default=linux
image=/boot/vmlinux-2.2.16-22
label=linux
initrd=/boot/initrd-raid1.img
read-only
root=/dev/md0
root# /sbin/lilo
Added linux *
root# cp /etc/lilo.conf /raidtmp/etc/
cp: overwrite '/raidtmp/etc/lilo.conf'? y
So now the last thing I need to do is edit /raidtmp/etc/fstab but the
instructions say:
"edit the "/(raid_mount_point)/etc/fstab" and change "/" =
(raid_device) "
and it's just not clear to me what line I am supposed to edit ...
I have:
LABEL=/ / ext2 defaults 1 1
is the only line that references / and it does not offer a device ...
???
Should I add a line?
I changed it to
/dev/md0 / ext2 defaults 1 1
I reboot. The shutdown all seems good, I see several messages about
the RAID turning off and shutting down that are all healthy.
then ... FAILURE!!!
"The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
file system .... "
And I get "dropped to a shell"
There:
Repair Filesystem 1 # df
Filesystem 1-k blocks Used Available Use%
Mounted on
/dev/md0 3866000 199504 3470112 6% /
df: /proc: No such file or directory
At the shell I can edit /etc/fstab and I set the line back to:
LABEL=/ / ext2 defaults 1 1
I reboot and the df output is the same, but now I can't edit any
files!!! They are all read only and there's now swap space to open
them for writing!
So the entire last three hours' work seems to be down the tubes again!
Anybody, please help!

I recompile my kernels and leave out all the stuff I have no need
for....like NFS. I use samba because I have a hybrid Linux / Windows
network. Thats all I need.
I also used to turn off virtually everything in inetd....except now
RH7.0 hax xinetd and it doesn't work.
I have tried to use the "bind" and "only_from" parameters and they
simply don't work....I get syntax errors even when the statements are
eyeball identical to the docs.....very frustrating. How hard would it be
to put a GUI front-end on that xinetd config....with a wee bit of help
attached? Even if it was just to turn a function of or on.....Maybe that
hsould be my first Linux prgramming effort....write an X utility that
handles the /etc/xinetd.conf file and the /etc/xinetd.d/<whatever>
files.
xinetd looks like a great idea....but the implementation in RH 7.0 sucks
rotten bananas.

Subject: Install SuSE 6.3 on SGI 320 Visual Workstation
Date: Sat, 27 Jan 2001 00:17:48 GMT
Recently I've got a SGI 320. Now I'm spending my nights figuring out, how to
put my favorite Linux distro on it. I've found the
Linux-Visual-Workstation-Project page, which tells exactly what to do, but it
relies on RH6.
The kernel which is provided on their page boots ok, but the second floppy
contains the RH install tool, which I can't use. Now I tried to make up a
floppy of my own (wrote the boot image onto a floppy) but ended up w/ a
kernel panic (unable to mount root fs on 01:00). I'm stuck here. If anyone
managed to get SuSE running on such a machine, please let me know. TIA!
