So far I have not yet found any packages for VoIP clients for Linux. If we
are empty, I think the next step will be to build something. Use of JMF
maybe something to look into.

Have a start at
http://www.openh323.org/
or at
http://www.linuxtelephony.org/
it's really not hard to find these:
http://www.google.com/search?q=linux+voip
There is also an howto you may want to read:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/VoIP-HOWTO.html
Another page you might find in no time is
http://www.voxilla.org/
Hope that's enough for you ;-)

Date: Sat, 3 Feb 2001 17:37:15 +0100
Hi all,
I recently installed Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 Potato on my system, I didn't
install any Device Drivers because quite frankly I had no clue which of the
offered drivers matches my hardware. Now I have a running OS, but can't do
much with it yet.
Hopefully, someone could give me some pointers on how to
1. install my 3Com Etherlink XL TPO 10Mb Ethernet NIC (3C900B-TPO)
ethernetcard (which module?), and
2. setup my (cable modem) network environment (IP, DNS, Gateway etc.)
without any of those fancy netconfig progs, since I don't think they came
along with my Debian 2.2. :-)
Thanks in advance!
Regards,
paul.

This is really weird. I selected PS/2 Generic AGAIN through
mouseconfig, verified it in XF86Config and it SEEMS to be working now!
I guess that it didn't like the MS PS/2 selection and the generic is
working.... Way to go BIll G!
Now if I can just get my serial to workie... since I'm going through
a switchbox and would love to have one less mouse on the desktop!

I have to reinstall my debian potato machine after a possible security
breach.
I have /var and /home under seperate partitions, are there any
problems related to keep these two partitions nearly untouched?
Are there any special files under /etc except for group and passwd
that I'd need to keep? (Of course this is dependant on the software
I'm running but I'm thinking of "system files")
I do not use ghost password on the system now, but I will go over to
that. How do I do that and at the same time keep the users that are on
the system now without manually adding them again?
Any other experiences related to this type of reinstall that anyone
would like to share are appreciated ;-)

You don't need it. RH v7 uses xinetd instead. Check "man

With the overlap condition, Partition Magic is taking the
cautious way out because it can't be certain where one partition
ends and the other begins. Resizing/moving the partions in this
condition could result in data loss. The best way to fix this
(unless you're ready to edit the partition table by hand) is to
back up all your data, delete the partitions, recreate them and
restore the data. Probably not what you wanted to hear,
though...

I'm glad I can help, as I've just gone through almost this identical
process.
My distribution of Linux is SuSE7.0 which didn't have a new enough version
of XFree86 to work with my card. It requires 4.0.1 (according to NVidia's
site). So I went to www.free86.org and followed their install
instructions, and used the SuSE tools sax2 to specify using the 'nv'
driver. You could also probably use the other config tools like
xf86config, I guess.
NVidia has other drivers to overlay on this basic configuration, but when I
tried to run them I got some conflicts. And, I don't know if I want to
screw up the 1280x1024x24bitx100Hz I was able to set up.
PS - the instructions suggest stopping xdm. This is done, as root, with
/etc/rc.d/xdm stop.
PPS - BIG note: When I first rebooted w/ my new card w/o the new XFree86,
I got NO graphics whatsoever. I didn't have anything important on my Linux
partitions so I reinstalled and got VGA16. In retrospect I probably could
have switched to that before I installed my card solely for the purposes of
installing the new XFree86.

My system is like your expect with a 400Mhz processor and 100Mhz bus speed.
I just got a Hercules Prophet II MX and love it. A little tricky in Linux
though, you need to have XFree86 4.0.1 or later to access the 'nv' driver.
Before you make the card switch, go into VGA16 mode, with the files at
www.xfree86.org (they're up to 4.0.2) already downloaded (to avoid what I
did: downloading in VGA16 - ugh!). Run their scripts to install it. My
SuSE Linux has a tool called sax2 to specify 'nv', maybe your distro has
something similar.
NVidia's site has some rpms to overlay the xfree86, but I haven't gotten
around to resolve their conflict yet. But the base nv give me
1280x1024x24bitx100Hz. Yay.
And my goodness, it is a windows games speed demon!

Success - so far. Thanks to all for your suggestions.
I opted to go for the 5.1 distro that I have, 7 is on the way. I'll
reinstall when I get it but I figured I could play around, break a few
things, play around some more and then start over.
I've got Linux up.
I've got Samba up (but not configured quite right)
I've got ftp/telnet across the network from multiple workstations
(yea!)
I've got xfree86 running (very nicely - actually all my hardware was
found so this was SO painless compared to other stories)
I had trouble with the ftp service - cause unknown - but a reinstall
fixed it (reinstall will fix many things ;-).
I have not figured out how to change the NT domain in samba to be that
of the network (Linus shows up in MyGroup rather than Peanuts - FWIW
NT host is named Charlie, you can figure out the rest :-). Nor have I
figured out how to share a specific space but I'm still reading.
I have not tried Apache yet. But I'm still at it.
Thanks again!!

Dear Herman,
