So you don't really know which file is in control here?
Man init doesn't really help, it refers on to man inittab and so on
but I have looked in various of these files in order to see any of the
services that flash on startup being mentioned but they are not...

Examples:
sendmail gets started
httpd (apache) gets started
....
but samba does not get started, so I want to add smb to the scrip that
is run at boot-up. Problem is which script or configuration file is
used?

There must be a simple answer to this.

/Bo

Hello,

could be related to some gethostbyname() sendmail tries (sometimes it
just can't get its own hostname - if nothing
helps you can set it in sendamil.cf - but try to solve this first other
ways), lookup
/var/log/messages warn mail for some hints and setup those names in
/etc/hosts if your DNS is not working 100%...

Good luck

I had a similar problem with 2.4.0 The solution was to get the patest user
side ppp package (I just searched in google, I think it's also 2.4),
and then upgrading to the latest modutils. This sorted it.

None. That's your problem.

Read the man page. All wil be clear.

There is. Why are you refusing to see it?

In any case, if you don't feel like dropping in the links into the
relevant rcX.d directories, as you've been directed to, you can either
add the line to rc.local, or use any of the frontends that do the
linking job for you. ksysv has been mentioned, as has been setup.

I have almos the same problem with kernel 2.4.0 (ever since test10 and up
to the finel I believe).

When I boot linux says "AT Keyboard not present" 2 or three times and
continues booting (at least it doesn't say "press F1 to continue"... :)

the strangest is that I can use the keyboard EXCEPT for the xxx-lock keys
(num/caps/scroll) which freezes the machine for about 1 second (all disk
activity stops and everything freezes - you know... same as windows.... :)

I can work with it though, but anytime my finger slips into these keys it
gets a bit on my nerves...

any ideas?

The X-Server (launched with startx) needs a IP address to start. I think
your machine is configured to receive its IP via DHCP. When cable modem is
turned off, the server cannot get the IP and locks up.

I can help you on the resolution. run Xconfigurator (just type 'setup' and
press enter) and go into X configuration and after it detects your video
card go to OK. Choose custom as your video monitor. You will need to choose
a monitor that can do 1024x768 at about 80hz. On the next screen choose
"70-90". It will then probe the best screen resolution. You should stick
with this one or it may not run properly. It will then test it on X-Windows.

It takes time to find such, actually more than saying like in "Faulty Towers"
"Me from Barcelona, me know nothing!" and picking up a good administrative
book and doing your homework.
After few month you feel confident and changing distros is not important
anymore.

No to both!
What you encountered happens to many of us, so maybe it is time to use the
tools provided (including the gray matter) in a way that does not depend on
availability of s/w or h/w.
Simple, you want dual boot.?
On pristine drive create Linux primary partition starting AND ending on
cylinder 1. It will be /boot.
After that install MS-Glassware alowing it as much as you want.
Now back to Linux. Create Linux extented partition (code 85) and divide it into
swap, root, usr, home, opt to your liking.
Install Linux. Kernel/s into /boot and no more problems. Lilo loves it.

Have fun.

OK. I've solved this one - enable ACPI in the kernel and disable APM

Hi,

I have a little (enormous ?) problem with cups on a compaq deskpro 2000,
pentium 166 & mandrake 7.2 in caracter mode (runlevel 3). The running
kernel is called "secured" (I don't know what it exactely means).

When I type a "cat /etc/hosts >/dev/lp0", My printer (a deskjet 550C)
well prints the file's text (going out of the sheet because there is no
filter, which is normal). Therefore, no problem with the parallel port
(I suppose).

The network is initied ("network" command in the init.d directory), and
the cupsd deamon is started a the boot stage (I can see it running with
a "ps ax").

But, if, under the root account, I try to type "lpinfo -v" I get a :
lpinfo: Unable to connect to server: Ressouce not avaliable

I have read the cups documentation (I have printed the cups user and
administrator manuals) buts I have found nothing about this problem.

Does one of you have any idea ?

Regards.

Hi

I have Redhat 7.0 and would like to install a Zoomair 2Mb PCMCIA card in it.
I've read all the websites which describe the installation process, but
can't really work out how to do it (some of those sites assume you have an
older version of the pcmcia and wlan modules etc.). Currently, the pcmcia
adapter is working fine (it installs on boot without any errors). However, I
can't seem to get the Zoomair card working (or more to the point, I can't
figure out what I need to do). Do I need to rebuild the pcmcia and wlan
modules, or can I just modify some settings in the /etc/pcmcia directory? I
have another ethernet card in the box, and it's working fine (as eth0).
There is no eth1 configured. I'm not that familiar with linux, so any help
would be very much appreciated!

Many thanks
Austin
