Thanks Mark. To be fair, I was impressed at the way RH7 installed - much
better than RH5, my last dip into Linux. It's just a pity that I can't get
it to boot without a floppy, which is of course slow and not as elegant as a
hd boot. I remember having lots of "fun" with lilo last time too so was
hoping to avoid that this time around. No such luck.

Here's what I'm doing:

1) Boot into linux using the boot floppy. Linux is installed totally in a
2.5GB /root partition on hdb1 (a 15GB eide drive). There is also a 500MB
swap partition on the drive somewhere too (maybe hdb6).
2) I edit /etc/lilo.conf to install lilo in the root partition - i.e.
/dev/hdb1.
3) I execute lilo and it installs but gives a warning that it is not on the
first drive.
4) I dd the boot sector onto a fat16 floppy.
5) I boot into Win2k and copy the boot sector into the root folder.
6) I edit boot.ini to show a Linux option pointing to the boot sector file.
7) I reboot and choose "Linux"

The computer hangs at "LI".

I upgraded a linux box to RHL 7.0 & now I can not telnet into it from an
NT box. I can telnet from another linux box. Ping works OK (with
either the IP address or hostname). I have samba working on the linux
machine, so this is something to do with xinetd(?) or security
(maybe?).

I'm also trying to set up a pop server on the linux machine & have the
same results (OK from another linux machine, but no luck from NT) When
I watch the /var/log/maillog I see the pop login from linux, but nothing
when I try from NT, the same is true of the /var/log/secure.

I've had the same results with an empty hosts.allow & with ALL : ALL

Any ideas? This worked before I redid the system & I assume I've got
something set or not set somewhere...

What do you get when you telnet to the pop3 port from NT?

I'm have an old PC that I use to connect my LAN* to the
Internet. Right now, it is running windows 95SE and Internet
Connection Sharing. Naturally, I'd like to convert it to running
LInux, as I'm tired of having to reboot it once or twice a day.
I'm pretty sure that the ICS is a Microsoft-perverted version of a
DHCP server, and I'll get into that another day.
Right now my problem is, how do I set up this PC so that it
will use my aDSL connection? There is a question during setup ( this
is Redhat 7.0 ) that asks for this machines gateway IP address ( and
also the primary and secondary DNS servers). I think that I have the
DNS servers entered correctly ( 207.69.188. 186 & .185 ), but I'm
stumped as to what the gateway address is. I've tried using
192.168.0.1, same as the two NIC's in the machine. I'm not sure if
the IP address is assigned by my ISP. Should I just call up tech
support and ask? My ISP is Mindspring or maybe Earthnet ( they've
changed their name since I started with Netcom).
Also, I've tried using the Roaring Penguin program to connect
to my ISP. I can get it to say that it is connected, but pinging my
DNS servers says that they are unavailable.
        What am I doing wrong?
Thanks

Hi all,
At windows system and single mode & X-Windows under Linux, we can
setup OS script files and OS won't ask account and password.
At text mode(mode 3, not mode 1) under Linux, how to do ? I have checked the
script files at '/etc' and i don't know when login process is run.
Can anybody tell me how to do via modifying script files? or I must modify
the kernel source code for this( I can modify source codes, but i don't
which souce file? )

Because it's easy to login single mode ( mode 1 ) and mode 5 without
account, I think that it's work at mode 3.

P.S. Mine is Red-Hat 7.0 . or 6.2.

I'm almost wondering if this is related to the lack of identd on Windows
machines, as this is the 2nd-3rd report I've heard.

If you create the file /etc/sysconfig/desktop and place in it the
string: AnotherLevel, then xdm should come up. Check /etc/X11/prefdm for
details.

Subject: HPT370 RAID and Linux
Date: Mon, 05 Feb 2001 05:09:11 GMT

The short is, can I use my existing RAID-0 setup that was configured by the
HPT370 BIOS under Linux? I've been doing some reading here and there, and I
read about Software RAID under Linux, but I don't know if this will work
since it's already been setup and works fine under Win98. (I've played with
Linux before, and I like Slackware. Don't ask why, but it works fine for
me, and I've been using Slack for some time, and I'm comfortable with it.
Those who go to war over different distributions should consider the final
point there...)

Here's the internal setup: (All have 1 partition at this time)

IDE1: WD75 7.5G HD (Master) hda C: WIN98C
NECR 7500 CDRW (Slave) hdb F: CD-ROM (Historical reasons)
IDE2: Empty

IDE3: WD26400 6.4G HD (Master) hde RAID-0 D: RAID D
      WD36400 6.4G HD (Slave) hdf RAID-0 D:
IDE4: Empty

(I know, I know, I should put the drives in the RAID on their own IDE
channel, but what's done is done, I may change it to get a speed boost.
It's still logically a 12G drive!)
My plan is to resize hda1 and make some Linux partitions in the resulting
space. My question is, is it possible for me to access the RAID already
present in Linux? Do I need any special drivers for it, or would the
Software RAID in Linux do the job? I'm just a touch leery about playing
around w/o knowing the facts.

Any/all information/advice would be appreciated.

Using the installation boot disk and CD, boot the system and follow
through the install up to the partitioning section. Delete all linux
partitions and then choose the "Back" button and save the changes when
asked. Then reboot the system with a windows boot disk and do a:

fdisk /MBR

You will have to format the disk/partition back to the DOS format.

There's an intermediate release - 3.05 of rpm that needs to be installed
first. You will also need to redo your rpm database immediately after
the upgrade to 4.x

---->>>>>>>YOU DA MAN!<<<-----
I've been messing with linux for 3 days trying to set my res to no avail.
Everyone on these message boards (except for you) has RH v6.2. As you have
seen, this doesn't do anything for us RH v7 users. Thanks so much for
offering your input after you resolved your problem. More people should
follow this.
Now if i could figure out how to change my IP address...

Hi There,

I found the following two files, each over 650 MB:
Intel Redhat-7.0-i386-respin-disc1.iso

Intel Redhat-7.0-i386-respin-disc1.iso

Are these All I need to burn a complete RH Linux 7.0 for my installation?
Do I need anything else?

Thanks,

Go to the Red Hat errata page. Grab rpm-3.0.5-9.6x.
Upgrade to that. It will handle 4.x-rpms.

If you *really* think you need to then upgrade to
rpm-4.x, be prepared to track down a lot of dependencies.
