Don't waste our time asking us to do your work for you. If you want to

Hi to everyone,
I'm more than a newbie and I'm trying to install Mandrake 7.2,I'm having
problems.
Just after I've boot the cd,it recognize my scsi controller (AHA
2940AU),then it ask me which cd rom I'm using (PX R412C) if it's scsi or
other cd rom..but when I chose the first option it tells me that there's a
problem on mounting the SCD0 device.I don't know what to do,I've even tried
to install Red Hat 7.2,but gives me the same problem..seems like there's no
"driver" for my cd recorder,am I wrong? Any hint about it would be
appreciated.
Thanks in advance

The 386 will take a special distribution. The kernel has been
larger than 4 MB for several years. But, there are specialty
distributions that trim the kernel--just to install on machines like
yours. The "woven goods" site has pointers to many linux
distributions (including small ones), and there are some how-tos on
making the kernel smaller. Debian "might" install--it can use a
floppy disk for "spare" ram, and the base distribution comes on about
a dozen floppies (you can copy disk images to floppy from the cd or
online site files, even on a doswin machine via rawrite).
The linux on a floppy distributions are built for special
cases. lrp, for example, is set up as a router. It expects 12 MB
RAM. And if you have less than a 486, it will probably be a choke
point on a 10 Mbit/s ethernet.
Mulinux is a very nice 1-3 floppy distributions that is set up to
allow you to make any pc a linux pc so you can telnet around. It even
has several (coarse) windows managers in the 1-3 floppies (1 for basic
linux, 2 for X, and 3 for gcc, too--if I recall correctly). It could
be a good choice if you want to occasionally use your win98 machine to
telnet to a linux box. Note, win98 has telnet. So you can call into
your linux box from 98. But, if you want to do Xwindows, you need a
mini-distribution of an OS containing X (or a program like EXCEED).
You can telnet, use a floppy distirbution like mulinux, or set up an
alternative boot. Note, you could also install a small linux
distribution in UMSDOS mode (instead of using the linux file system).
While this would not be a robust linux, it might be just fine as a
"dumb terminal" that speaks linux and X.

Subject: Q: Initialising secondary video card under XFree86 4.0
Date: Wed, 7 Feb 2001 01:23:20 +1100
Hi there
I have two graphics cards in my machine:
PCI 1:0:0 AGP 3DFX Voodoo3 2000 16Mb
PCI 2:0:0 PCI 3DFX Voodoo3 2000 16Mb
I am running XFree 4.0 under kernel 2.2.17 with SuSE 7.0
The problem is that I cannot get X to run on the second graphics card,
either in multihead or regular mode. My BIOS allows me to specify which card
is initialised as primary (the PCI or AGP card) and, depending on which one
I select, X will only run on that card. It runs perfectly on each respective
card when it is primary. I am trying to do multihead, but I can't get the
secondary card to work either way. It does initialise (ie the monitor
receives a signal) when I try to start X on the secondary card, but the
screen remains blank. I am forced to do a cold reboot and watch fsck go
through it's motions every time.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Segmentation faults are an indication for a cashing program, in the worst
case, the linux kernel itself.
If it's a special application, which is faulting, you shoud try and get a
newer version of it or recompile it, if possible.
If the kernel itself is crashing, you'll have to recompile it. If that's new
to you, read the kernel HOWTO's and the related documentation.
Mainly, you have to
- Download and install the kernel source tree /usr/src/linux
- As 'root', change directory there and
$ make xconfig dep bzImage
$ make modules modules_install
- Copy /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage to, say /boot/vmlinuz-x.y.z
(x.y.z = kernel version, e.g. 2.2.18)
- If using LILO: edit lilo.conf and add the new kernel, run /sbin/lilo then
- If using LoadLin or other DOS loaders: copy new kernel image to loadlin
directory (e.g. /dos/C\:/Loadlin)
To compile the kernel successfully, you'll of course need a kernel which is
capable of running an X-Session, a terminal window and the compiler itself
without crashing.
If you need further assistance, post more details.

Don't know about RedHat, but isn't there a sound setup somewhere in the
"Control Center" or whatever this one's called in RH? If X-Windows is
running OK on your system, you should find the sound setup somewhere in the
system programs installed by RH. They should include both "OSS" drivers as
well as "ALSA"-drivers for most sound chips. Sometimes you have to recompile
the kernel or sound modules to make your sound card work.

Edit you Vert Refresh and Horizontal Sync rates in you XF86Config file
usually in /etc/X11 to change your refresh rate. Look at your monitor specs
to set this correctly...To change resolutions in XWin just do ctrl alt +

To uninstall from a running linux system do the following.
boot into linux.
login as root
/sbin/lilo -u
fdisk /dev/hda # or sda depending on your hard drive.
delete all linux partitions
quit and save changes
reboot with a DOS/windoz boot disk.
enter: fdisk /MBR
You will need to format the partition or drive back to a DOS/windows
format
=======================
Use the installation boot disk to boot the system and follow through the
install up to the partitioning section. Delete all linux partitions and
then choose the "Back" button and save the changes when asked. Then
reboot the system with a windows boot disk and do a:
fdisk /MBR
You will have to format the disk backto the DOS format.

INN needs a feed from a peer to work. Unless your willing to pay money
for this, then try Leafnode. I use it and it works great. It is also
alot simpler than INN. See howto on Leafnews.

Boot machine with the original kernel coming with the distribution.
Then 'make oldconfig' which gives you the default setting of current kernel,
'make xconfig' turn off the options you don't need.
You won't lose anything you need. :)

I use pine 4.21 but any pine > 4 should be ablo to handle both POP3 and
IMAP.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Pine and IMAP *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
If your isp would support IMAP that would be perfect, then you can have
access to all your mail folders from everywhere. Edit your .pinerc file
and set the inbox-path and the remote directory where your files will be
stored. Use for instance pico as the editor: "pico ~/.pinerc"
I find that editing the .pinerc file is a lot more effecient (when you
want to do something specific and know your way around) the using pine
itself to configure it. It takes a lot more explanation to walk someone
screen by screen through.
add/edit the lines:
# configure pine to use the imap protocol to access mail from my
# provider. The mailserver is imap.ISP.NET
inbox-path={imap.ISP.NET/imap/user=USERNAME}inbox
folder-collections={imap.ISP.NET/imap/user=USERNAME}mail/[]
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Pine and POP3 *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
To use POP3, edit your.pinerc file again and set the inbox-path:
inbox-path={pop.ISP.NET/POP3/user=USERNAME}inbox
The documentation warns you though about using pop3 and pine;
POP3
This value indicates communication with the server takes place via
the Post Office Protocol 3 protocol. Note that there
are several important issues to consider when selecting this
option:
1. POP3 provides access to only your INBOX. In other words,
secondary folders such as your "saved-messages" are
inaccessible.
2. Pine's implementation of POP3 does not follow the traditional
POP model and will leave your mail on the server.
3. Pine's implementation of POP3 is not fully supported and, as
such, has known limitations and inefficiencies.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Pine and remote mailserver *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
To use your ISP mailserver to send mail edit again the .pinerc file:
# List of SMTP servers for sending mail.
smtp-server=MAIL.ISP.NET
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Using Pine *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Using pine should be selfexplanatory though, just start it by typing
"pine" on the prompt, the keystrokes which control it are printed below.
You don't need to use capitols though, d = D etc.
^X stands for CTRL + X. That's all.
L lists folders (directories where you store Fcc's and the "virtual
folder INBOX which has your new and undeleted mail)
Then select INBOX when using IMAP or POP3 you'll be asked to enter
your password, and you have to be online to connect to your provider.
Use arrows to select messages and folders. Should be pretty trivial.
So you can configure pine to use pop3 or IMAP to get at your mail,
but the usual thing to do is to use fetchmail, which downloads the mail
from your ISP with the POP3 protocol, and then uses something like
sendmail, postfix or exim to distribute the mail to your local mailbox.
The advantage is that you don't have to keep a connection open and alive
to your ISP to read your mail. fetchmail is just run once, gets all new
mail and you can close the session. In Europe with metered calls that is
quite effecient. Now when you have a persistent connection you can run
fetchmail in daemon mode, it will then check your mailbox regularly.

all the drivers get loaded just fine. But I don't want to put it in a

in modules.conf (writing from memory), ran depmod -a (BTW, it produces

Any ideas
