Hi group,

This may be a hopeless newbie question, but...
I have installed RH 7.0 and would like to upgrade to the 2.2.17 or 2.4
kernel. I believe there should be a /usr/src/linux directory. I don't see
one; there is a 'redhat' directory. Where are the kernel source files? I
get an error when I try to run make config.
All help gratefully accepted

Then check /etc/filesystems.
Is udf in?
(all this is in `man mount`)

If you think of putting eg /usr and /home on one partition, you're
going to have
to fiddle with symlinks. As you cannot mount a part of a partition to
mountpoint A
and another part of it to B. It would be a weird way of partitioning
though.
But it's not impossible.

I using Mandrake 7.0 an did a recommend install.
Was C compiler (gcc ) not installed?
How can I check to see if it was?
Or is my troubles somewhere else?

1st, the kernel source tree often is not installed by default. But you
should either find the archive on your CD's, or can download it from
thousands of linux file servers around the world. These archives are named
"linux-x.y.z.tar.bz2", where "x.y.z" is the version (e.g. 2.2.17), and can
be unpacked with "tar -C /usr/src -xvIf linux-x.y.z.tar.bz2" (newer tar
versions), or with "bzip2 -c linux-x.y.z.tar.bz2 | tar -C /usr/src -xvf -"
(all tar versions). After that, the directory /usr/src/linux should be
present.
2nd, it is recommended to rename this directory and create a symbolic link
this way:
        # cd /usr/src
        # mv linux linux-x.y.z
        # ln -s linux-x.y.z linux
This way you can switch between multiple kernel versions, simply by
re-creating the symbolic link

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I need to find a application that can do simple database access and text
file reading, that can be accessed from a serial terminal from a linux
server. I want to be able to read names and telephone numbers, and
simple to do lists from the server. I would also like to be able to
access and change these databases from windows and macintosh clients on
the network with the linux server. A simple text file could be used for
this on the server, but is there a good app for searching the text files
available for access by a serial terminal. I am not too fond of vi and
similar apps, as they do not have very many features. Also I am not
familiar with emacs or similar apps, as I have never had any use for
them. This is a learning experience for me. I have not found any howto
on this subject and I have read the redhat documentation and not found
anything there either. I use RedHat 7.0 at the moment on a Cyrix 200MMX
serving ipchains with port forwarding, dns, squid caching proxy, www,
ftp, news, appletalk filesharing, samba filesharing for windows, printer
sharing, ppp over serial, serial logon for terminal, and cdrom's online.

I am developing systems and software for cross platform use of an isp in
Pakistan currently, and I need this system for the terminal to provide
some little comfort to my wife who says I spend too much time with my
computers. She needs to put her telephone lists and to do lists on the
computer, and I have not told her that I do not know how to do this yet.
Please help me out of my perdicament, so I can work in peace.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have install a Redhat 6.1 on this disk, but I have a conflict with my

Apparently, the hard drive use the addresses normally used by my parallel

How can I resolve it?
I have try to change the IRQ of my disk on the bios, and I also try to
change the address of the // port in the bios, but without results.

According to the README in the 2.4.x kernel tree, the /usr/src/linux
directory shall not be used anymore for upgrading kernels. There the library
headers shall live that came with the distribution, if i understand this
right. I installed a /usr/src/kernel/2.4.1 directory for this purpose. Seems
to work fine, but perhaps some guru can shed some more light on this issue
?!

I'd guess that the install kernels you're booting don't have support for
your Promise card built into them. Drivers for that card are a pretty
recent development from what I gather and you may need to go to a 2.4.x
kernel to get it to work. But no distro is currently shipping with a 2.4
kernel at install time, so you're in something of a bind. Does anyone
more familiar with this card have any suggestions? I've never actually
used one.

For the console, check out the command "consolechars". For various X

I want to install Mandrake on an old Dell Optiplex GL5133. According to the
instructions, I'm supposed to
disable plug n play (PnP) OS support so that the BIOS is forced to
handle PnP. However, there's no option to do this in the BIOS SETUP program
(it's
Phoenix 1.10 if that's any help).

Does this mean I don't have to worry about it, or that I need to disable PnP
manually for each device before installing, or that I need to find a less
ancient machine?
In other words, if I just go ahead and install Linux, will it be able to
detect any of the hardware?

    Thanks in advance,

Boot from floppy and see if you can fsck the drive. If you're very lucky
that might solve the problem. If you're less lucky, you'll get to revisit
the joys of fdisk. If you're even less lucky you have a new paperweight.
