Subject: Defining Network Printer
Date: Tue, 13 Feb 2001 11:12:22 +0800

I defined a network printer using "control-panel" as follows:-

/etc/printcap:-

is02:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/is02:\
        :mx#0:\
        :sh:\
        :rm=hp5_isd:\
        :rp=raw:\
        :lpd_bounce=true:

However, when I do a test print say "lpr -Pis02 /etc/hosts", nothing has
come out. Could someone advise me to resolve such problem? Thanks.

The following are the info:-

[root@falcon is01]# lpstat -o is02

This sounds like an interesting problem. Your mount command looks OK.
What does the output of "ls -l /dev/hda1" look like? Mine looks like:
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 3, 1 Jul 5 2000 /dev/hda1
The most important thing is that the major and minor numbers agree with
what I have here, and since that's what it's complaining about I have to
wonder.

Also, what does the output of "fdisk -l" look like? Post that here too.
Provide more info and maybe we can fix this thing.

First, your message arrived in both plain ASCII and HTML. It's best to
post just in ASCII; the HTML is wasted bandwidth.

As to your question, there's a text entry field immediately beneath the
"size" selector. Type the font size into that field, be sure that "allow
scaling" is selected, and you should get your specified font size.

gcc is installed but other things are missing. Probably the headerfiles
of libc, which are coming with development package for glibc ( IIRC
called glibc-devel on Mandrake)

You will find more information about the error in config.log

I haven't upgraded to that level pppd, just yet. What I have, right now...

Well, things are behaving differently now. To mess things up I've installed all the
Red Hat
security errata.

This is what is happening now: I can't dial directly as normal user. Still get device
busy.
But, if I bring up Netscape - as normal user- that causes the dialer to successfully
dial. It
didn't do that before. I don't know whether it was the errata updates or the permission
changes. I didn't change anything else.

You will find precious little help in newsgroups for LFS, which is a very
good start for doing what you want. You will have to get to the point that
you have a linux system on the box you are working on with a working
compiler to get started. The LFS mailing lists are the best shot at support.

You may be able to get started with a boot disk, connect to one of the
desktops you mention if you have a network card. If that doesn't go maybe
try a ftp install I believe RedHat used to support that.

In any case this is not a trivial task. The first thing to learn is how to
follow the instructions and figure out when you didn't. If you need help
with typo's don't bother yourself or everybody else. By the time you get
the system going you will know quite a bit about compiling.

I suppose it COULD be a problem that you are trying to run at a crazy
resolution. If I were you I would change all of my Modes lines to:

Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

and MAYBE get rid of the DefaultDepth line. Sorry I can't be of any more
help. Good luck,

Try text mode. There is a reasonably strong chance the graphics mode
will find conflicts easier than text mode will.

This message is frequently seen when entering a non-existent user name.
Make sure you have the name typed correctly. One other possibility is that
you've turned on shadow passwords? Check to see if
        MD5_CRYPT_ENAB yes
is set in /etc/login.defs.

Hi all;

Iam running RedHat 6.2 and trying to set it up as a server.

Not sure how to setup the ip numbers. It will accept a call and allow
login, but comes up "Could not determine local IP address".

Also should the remote computer have any ness..y settings, like in

I do not have any NICs, should the server have more than 127.0.0.1?

You would typically do this with the xset program

For the Caps-Lock
xset led 3

This requires that the line below is uncommented in your XF86Config file
# Option "Xleds" "1 2 3"

As far as I know you WILL have to use RH 7.0 for now, as you mentioned, this
is the only form of linux that Promise has released drivers for the
FastTrack controllers on. I have a FastTrack66, and can attest that you
will not be able to use any hard drives connected to it in a RAID
configuration. It will function as a normal IDE controller, but you already
have RAID0 up and running. Download and burn the RH .iso cd images and
follow the instructions included in the Promise drivers to install them
properly during your initial setup.

Or just man ./manfile.somthing

PS. Does anyone know how to format man pages for A4 size paper. groff
doesn't appear to have any options for this.

** go to the linux.announce group. In the last two months there was an announce
of a fax program.

** chkconfig depends on comment lines in your shell script to indicate what run levels
and 'priorities' to run your program in /etc/rc.d/init.d. I played with it for a
couple of times and NEVER found the magic formula for the comment line - even though
it seems to be well documented in 'man chkconfig'.

Instead, use "tksysv" and life will be easier.

The Promise FastTrack RAID controllers are only supported under RedHat as of
yet. Have to get drivers from promise.com

You picked a formerly good distro that's quickly becoming bad.

You have the "Deluxe" version then , not the "Complete" (sic) one.

It

Again, 7.2 "Complete" doesn't give you the opportunity. Its' available only
in "Deluxe" or higher now.

The Deluxe verison 7.1 was IMO fantastic and provided a lot of bang for the
buck (The menu update function was a little off but no problem). 7.2
Complete, and I hate to say this, is next to worthless in comparison.

What are the kind of files that you are sending?

In my experience, it it often inadvisable to try and print raw text to a
postscript printer under Linux. Use a tool to format it nicely into a
postscript format, such as a2ps, mpage, or enscript.

Also, on an unrelated front, I've seen that some printers will remove print jobs if
they are
(broken?). This is often the case with converted pdf files.
