I did so but didn't work neither.
By the way the rpm package of kernel 2.4.0 doesn't support ppp neither...

Hello,
I just installed Linux Mandrake 7.2 on my PC (first time ever I
installed Linux) and I experience some problems:
I partitioned my harddisk in several partitions. Two partitions are
FAT32 (windows 2000). One of these partitions I would like to use to
store my data (I have to be able to read my Linux outputs in Windows).
The disk is mounted as /mnt/win_d and had nosuid. I think that's the
reason why all files are owned root.root. Can I change this to
username.usergroup, so that I don't continuously get errormessages if I
want to save something on that disk?
Tar even refuses to untar something on the disk!
Now, the disk is mounted as (this is an extract from /etc/fstab):
/dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat user,exec,umask=0 0 0
Can anyone help this novice linux user?

Yeah .. OK. While I don't feel like checking the source to see what
it's up to here, I would guess that you either have a file bigger than 2GB
there or a corrupted file system. I believe that the directory entry has
an unexpected value.

It's 3GB. No large file. You use 2.3GB for your /usr subsystem? What
distro is this? How come it grew a "plusnode.gif"?

It's a plain ext2 fs.

You have your own files elsewhere.
> none on /proc type proc (rw)
Looks like you'll have to get out debugfs and erase the entry in
question, then fsck and/or reboot to try and move the inode it referred
to to lost+found. If the inodes OK, rename it and replace it where it
wanted to go. If not, get out debugfs again to wipe the inode entry.

Hi, I have been having trouble dualbooting win 98 and LINUX. I have Win98
up on my C drive(primary-master(hda)) and have now set LINUX up on my D
drive(secondary slave(hdd)). I have the following partitions(on LINUX
drive): boot(15,7MB) and then inside an Extended partition I have the Swap
partition and root. OK?
Now when I have finished setting up LINUX and reboot, LILO freezes up on the
"L". Now I have had help here on this group from Eric, and He told me to:
edit: /etc/lilo.conf, finding a line witch says "Linear", I have and,
replaced it with Lba32 then I run /sbin/lilo -v
Nothing changes! LILO still doesn't make it past the L!!!!!
please HELP, all I have done already well exceeds my knowlidge of
computer(and LINUX) so I have NO IDEA what to do now!!!!..

I don't know whether others have had problems installing the RedHat
security upgrade or not, but I did, and the RH support tech was no
help, either. He agreed with me that the posted instructions were at
best out-of-date and incomplete, and and worst, wrong, but he couldn't
offer anything better.
I finally figured it out, and then wrote it down, so I'd be able to do it
again if necessary. Because it *might* help someone else, I've posted
it on one of my websites at
http://poolsolutions.com/nu-b/kernel-upg.html
It ONLY applies to Intel/AMD machines running RH 7 and booting
from IDE drives using the MBR (master boot record), and it's obviously
a guide from one newbie to another, but it works for me, and I had to
use it on 3 machines. Use at your own risk.
If you are NOT a newbie, and take a look, please let me know if you
see errors. The email address below works, but tends to get purged
automatically from spammer's files.

First I would assume that you work as a user other then root, when
running linux. My suggestion would thus be to make /mnt/win_d completely
owned by that user, by adding the options uid=hilde, guid=hilde where
you substitute hilde with the correct (g)uid.
The default permissions are set with umask variable, umask=002 is pretty
standard. Remember that vfat doesn't have native pemissions so that
trying to change them, whith chmod, or chown is impossible.
The result would be something like:
/dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat user,uid=1001,guid=501,exec,umask=002 0 0
For more information take a look at the manual page "man mount"
especially the sections "Mount options for fat" and "Mount options for
vfat" and the man page "man fstab".
Veel succes.

This seems to agree with most of the reply posts in this thread, so I
can conclude, that everything was fine and working 'as advertised'.
The only problem was my misunderstanding of the English language...
DEFINITION:
complete = light version, designed for newbies
(in other words: half of the packages are missing)
OK, I got it now!

I've had some trouble installing RedHat linux (version 6.2) on machines
without conventional floppy drives (ones with LS-120 or zip's for example).
The problem is that on installation, the boot process hangs apparently
trying to load the floppy driver. On a few machines, I was able to correct
the problem by disabling the floppy interface altogether in the machines'
bios. On one machine, however, this "fix" did not help.
My question then, is it possible (via kernel/lilo parameter or whatever) to
disable or prevent the attempted startup of the conventional floppy driver
(short of building a custom kernel)?

Well the warning on their page about "no developer tools" in the
"complete" (pretty stupid name for a 'light' version...) warned
me off of getting that package. However, I was wondering if anyone
knows what one loses by getting the free download package or odering
the 'free' cd's from cheapbytes.com. It appears as the compilers
and libraries are included in the download version. But what elements
of the distro (ie. powerpack package) are missing? I'm leaning towards
mandrake for a new laptop, but given the recent discusions here
lately, I'm thinking about Debian or maybe downloading both and
testing them out. I've installed various versions of Solaris on a
variety of Sun machines as well as installed and maintained software
for those machines, so I'm not too worried about having lots of trouble
with any flavor of linux, but I'd rather not waste a few days
tracking down various packages/drivers etc. So I need working
c/c++/fortran compilers at the minimum. My basic question with
distros boils down to: Do all the free download versions contain
compilers and working libraries and what would one gain by spending
$70 on the powerpack 7.2 distro of mandrake?

I changed the computer name in the host file (and then changed it back when

hanging for a while at sendmail, httpd and inntp stuff...
I changed it back to what it was previously and it still takes well over 5

Additionally, how would I go about changing it properly? (I figure the
answer to the first question will probably answer the second, but just in

Thanks for the reply -- I had missed it.
I don't quite understand your statement. I've been reflecting on
two strategies:
(A) Move say '/usr/' from partition X to partition Y; make a
directory on X called '/usr' and link it to Y.
(B) Move say '/usr/ from partition X to partition Y; mount Y as
'/usr'.
I've ended up doing (B). When I did (A) I got troubles that
seemed to result from faulty sym link references, e.g., I
couldn't start X because it couldn't find essential (symlinked)
files.
Right now I'm content with strategy (A) but I'm puzzling what I
did wrong in pursuing strategy (B). I'm just using '/usr' and
'/etc' as examples.
The advantage of strategy (B) would be I could put several base
directories on Y; I could put '/etc/' and '/usr' there, for
instance.
I hope my idea at least is clear.

Hi All,
I've got a QIC tape drive which has on-board compression. When I MAKEDEV'd
the /dev directory for the device, it created st0 and nst0 (rewinding and
non-rewinding) devices. This works fine.
But, my tape drive (a Tandberg TDC4100 or SLR3) has other modes, including
compression, etc. How do I get /dev entries for those?
How does anyone create different /dev entries for different modes for a tape
drive? Do you have to create an stinit.def entry for the device?
Thanks in Advance
