That won't set the visual class - X needs to be started with the
"-cc 3" option. I just went through this starting Xvnc on a Linux
box. The colors coming back were skewed (some of them pretty hideously).
Starting Xvnc with -cc 3 fixed the problem.

I can't get my printer to print to my Canon BJC-2010 from either of my
new RH6.2 installations: my router or my (dual-booting) laptop. The
laptop WILL print to it when booted into Win98, and the router WILL
print to it when I boot it from a Win98 hard drive. In both Win98s, the

IRQ is automatically set to "7".
The following info is also true for both machines:
==================
- after booting up, there is nothing about parport or IRQ7 showing in
the /proc directory.
Is that normal?
===================
- But after I try a 'cat /etc/printcap > /dev/lp0' (which produces NO
response from the printer), I _do_ find a /proc/parport directory, with
an '0' directory, containing 4 entries. The 'hardware' entry shows
     base: 0x378
     irq: 7
     dma: none
     modes: SPP,PS2
When I run 'dmesg', I see
     parport 0: PC-style at 0x378, irq 7 [SPP,PS2]
parport 0: Printer, Canon BJC-2000, and
     lp0: using parport0 (interrupt-driven)
Does all that look reasonable? Or should there be a setting for the
dma?
====================
My /etc/conf.modules file contains the lines
     alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc and
     options parport_pc io=0x378 irq=7,auto

What should I now try? I've run out of ideas.

You need to install packages supporting Tk and Tcl.

I am configuring a Linux 7 box to run BIND 9.1.0 as secodary DNS server. I
did a normal compiling (without any options) on a fresh box. When I start
the named, the sever always start without pulling data files from the
primary server. In the log file, I get error for all zones that supposed to
transfer to local.

"Feb 16 14:36:24 ns /usr/local/sbin/named[22624]: transfer of

I am sure on the primary server, I have gave zone transfer permission to
this secondary server. I doubt this has some to do with the Linux "security
feature" (drop root privileges when start), but I have no idea to how to fix
it.

Can anyone give me some suggestion?

Have you tried htacces, to restrict acces to part of the site to only
those ip-numbers, and then a simple redirecting script to that part
on the main page, something like
if ipnumber=a.b.c.d then insert "meta refresh=URL" else display page.

But if it concerns only those 4 ip's why don't you ask them to simply go
to that somewhere else, instead of forcing them?

Yes, because you're running the lp driver as a module, so you won't see
anything in /proc relating to it until the modules is loaded by the
kermel (in this case it is autoloaded), and can register itself in /proc

Printing plain text this way can be dodgy on Postscript printers. So I
imagine that InkJet printers are no different in this respect. Mostlikely
you have the printcap entries set wrongly. The Win98 boxen are set to
print to this type of printer, so they send output suitable for it. The
linux boxen probably are not, and just send raw input.

Send us the /etc/printcap of the print server, and a client. Aditionally,
Redhat has a tool call printtool (GUI) that does a fairly good job of
setting up a printer. You might like to upgrade from lpd to CUPS, which
is probably a better choice for inkjets, since drivers are constantly
being made.

Looks fine. DMA should not be neccesary.

How about

send the file to the printer
echo -e "\f" > /dev/lp0

This will send a form feed (eject) to the printer, which should make it
print the page.

Isn't telnet considered a text client? I did mention I can telnet in and do

I'm not understanding what you're leading to, if I need to check one area

I would strongly urge you to try Slackware for a few reasons:

1) You're experienced in *nix admin, and will already have the knowledge
to know how to configure a box without much need to fancy gui tools (some
things remain the same, like resolv.conf hosts (I've never used a Solaris
box, Sun are so not into letting people download the intel version :( ).
All the other stuff you can find with grep.

2) Slackware prides itself on being the most Unix like distribution of
Linux. The most noticeable part of this being the slightly BSDish init
scripts (I've recently had a go with NetBSD, there are quite a few
differences)

3) Slackware is often recognised as a great system for really learning a
system. If you get into trouble, there is a truely wonderful newsgroup
alt.os.linux.slackware that can help you out. We are really friendly
there (this would appear to be a luxury outside of many Linux circles)

4) Slackware is one of (the?) most stable, mature and secure versions of
Linux available. To find out more about the Slackware Linux Project and
its goals etc, please visit http://www.slackware.com

Have fun with Linux -- Cameron Kerr

Subject: syslogd or rpc.statd errors?
Date: Fri, 16 Feb 2001 15:02:08 -0800

Recently I'm getting errors in my logs which look suspicious and I can't
identify what is causing them. Daily I find entries like the one copied
below. Recently I have been updating several RedHat 6.2 packages,
reconfiguring my ftpd conf files and I've been tightening my security
screws in different ways. Perhaps I caught myself.

If anyone is familiar with this kind of error I'd could use some tips to
resolve.

The same rpc.statd statement is then repeated four more times. Maybe that's
somekind of buffer overload attempt or something?

Thanks,
