Distribution selection, like many things with Unix/Linux, is typically a
religious debate. From my perspective, it really depends on what you want
to get out of the experience. If you want to really _learn_ Linux, I would
recommend Slackware. If you want to learn how to set up what's most
'popular,' but not necessarily understand what's going on behind the GUI
tools, then RedHat, SuSE, etc. I stumbled onto Slackware by accident. I've
never regretted it and have learned a lot in the relatively short time I've
been using Linux.

When installing a SAMBA Linux box into an NT network, don't forget the
following:

As NT Administrator:
Goto Server Manager, Add Linux box as NT Workstation. (use linux box's
hostname)
Exit.

Wait about 15 - 20 minutes. This will allow all servers to synchronize. I've
tried forcing a sync but it doesn't seem to work.

On the Linnux box:
Get to a terminal session as 'Root'
stop SMBD & NMBD (if started)
execute: smbpasswd -j NTDOMAINNAME -r NTPDCNAME

for example, on my network I'd type:
smbpasswd -j LGH -r LGHMAIN

(I just thought about this ^. Run smbpasswd --help to make sure that -r is
the NTPDC. Sorry, I'm not on Linnux right now :-( ).

After that, start SMBD & NMBD. You should be good to go.

I have looked through the message base and still don't see an answer so
here's a basic question:

When you log in using getty the PATH is set in rc.sysinit, /etc/profile, &
the local profile.

If you log in using X graphical login (either GNOME or KDE) how does the
PATH get set when you use the XTerm?

I need to add JDK1.2.2/bin path for all users but have not been successful.

System: RH 7 (kernel 2.2.16) standard workstation install (no bells &
whistles).

Sounds like you may have the right video driver, but the wrong
resolutions/color depths chosen. Or basically the wrong monitor picked. The
error says that X is trying to open the display, but cannont connect at the
specified frequencies. Double check yoiur monitor settings, along with
making sure you have the RIGHT number nine card, exactly. NOT close,
exact!!!!

Hello-
I have set up a networked RedHat 6.1 box at work to accept incoming dial
in calls from my W95 machine at home. The server runs mgetty. I can dial
in and start ppp and all works, except that all requests to get out of
the server onto my work network require the fully qualified domain name.
For example, to connect to my intranet server, i need to address to
intranet.mydomain.com, i cannot just address to intranet. DNS works but
I need the FQDN for internal sites. Here is my /etc/ppp/options file,
did I mess something up?

Subject: 2 problems, lp, and irq's(9)

Hi all;

Problem #1, can't print, no perms until I set the x perm on /dev/lp-lp0
etc. On reboot, kudzu? screams about that and wants to set them back to
just r/w. If I let it, then I can't print.

Problem #2, dmesg contains warnings about conflicts in the 'pirq' table,
always reported just after a device that uses that irq has been
scanned. Those devces are an advansys scsi card, and a Maxtor ATA-100
(PDC) IDE card. FWIW, both *seem* to be working just fine.

System is RH7.0 with all updates, 2.4.2pre4 kernel, 128M of ram.
And currently installed printer daemon is LPRng-3.24, not the llatest
one as installing that removes /etc/rc.d/init.d/lpd for some unknown
reason (along with /bin/lpd) and then I really can't print.

Ideas?

Cheers, Gene

Subject: Mandrake 7.2 network install blues! HELP HELP!]
Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 05:57:40 GMT

I installed Mandrake 7.2 flawlessly on my main machine with a grub dual
boot with WinMe. The system is a Celeron 366 (OC to 587) with 192MB 20GB
HD etc..

Installed from bootable CD Rom.

I then compiled Apache, MySQl and PHP with no problems. I mounted the
Mandrake CDROM as htdocs and can browse the mandrake CD from other
machines on my network.

I am trying to install mandrake on a crappy little PC with Cyrix 166,
24MB, 2GB HD (two drives), and undentifiable PCI graphics card and an
ISA network card. I use the network.img and boot, give it NE driver,
tell it 0x220 and IRQ 10 and give it the network info (ie domain etc)
all fine. I tell it the IP address of the mandrake machine and tell it /
for the directory. It spins up the CDROM drive on my main machine
running the apache server with the disk starts loading the 2nd stage RAM
disk then terminates abnormally signal 9 received. Sends kill all and
tells me safe to reboot.

If I do the exact same procedure with Redhat 6.1 it works no problem.
Any clues?

Please dont suggest "Just use Redhat" as I have reasons not to do so or
I wouldnt be asking =)

You can reply or email me by removing NOSPAM from my email address

Thanks a ton for any help you can provide!

Just to expand on jjs's response, the last 3 paragraphs are the giveaway.
It looks like you have a router and the Linux box on the same IP address.
Try taking the Linux box off the network, and pinging that IP address again.
If anything responds, check the ARP entry for that IP address. Each manufacturer
has a block of MAC addresses allocated to it. Unfortunately, Cisco uses
a *lot*
of MAC address blocks after buying out much of the competition. Cisco's MAC
address blocks don't look anything like PC NIC MAC address ranges (I think
they're 00:C0-something, but it's been a while)
A traceroute could be quite useful as well, to give some idea of just where
on the network that router is.
IP addresses can be a real pain to keep straight. Try pinging everything
on the subnet, and give the Linux box something that doesn't respond
- assuming it's *your* subnet, of course :-)

Try the linux documentation project (LDP): http://www.linuxdoc.org/

But the alternative is just to download the RPM's from ftp://ftp.redhat.com
and then do (as root) "rpm -Uvh <packages>"

It's all covered in various how-to's on the LDP site :-)

Webalizer is a binary that checks the httpd logs and creates web pages

Probably a job for mod_rewrite. I have not done that, but there are
examples based on HTTP_USER_AGENT, so I suppose it is easy enough to
figure out what to do with REMOTE_ADDR.

without the terminal freezing. I can "cd" the root ("/") directory, but
if I try an "ls", the whole terminal just freezes (ctrl-c is trapped
somehow) and I need close the xterm. I have a Mandrake 7.0 distribution

that 1. it had different tools to masquerade connections from other
machines and 2. there was a new way to implement a firewall (did not
find ipchains). To make a long story short, there were enough issues to
make me go back to my 2.2 kernel. I do not know exactly when this
problem occurred because I do not try to manipulate things from the root
dir very often. Has anyone else had any experience dealing with this

I have RH7 installed ,command-line only, the initial

I have the two current rpm files from Nvidia
    NVIDIA_kernel-0.9-6.rh70-up.i386
    NVIDIA_GLX-0.9-6.i386
I have tried several times, first removing several
lib files mentioned in the nvidia faq and later with
no mods.

The last installation renames several lib files during the process
but the Xconfigurator still willnot work and x does not start.

The XFree86 log file shows two modules missing, including
GLcore, which the rpm renames during installation.
So I conclude, one of us is nuts
