Subject: Lost Win98 when Installing RH7
I recently installed RedHat 7 on a Dell desktop that was running Windows
98. The install went well except that now Windows 98 refuses to boot no
matter what I do. I have read all the how-to's I can find. Lilo looks
ok (it is in the mbr).
I tested it after partitioning and before installing linux (and lilo)
and Win98 worked fine then. It stopped working after the linux install.
I tried removing it (lilo - u) as well as copying the boot.0300 file
back to hda. Nothing makes any difference.
I can't even use the old win98 rescue and boot diskettes to get it
going. It just hangs with a blinking curserl. Some advice on the list
seems to indicate that lilo is dangerous on the mbr but it is too late
for that now.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks, Paul

Nope, you try to connect your box to the internet and I try to explain to you
that you should upgrade your distro to make it secure, as your acient distro
sure has many security problems. And a new one would get you out of your
troubles,
as they mostly come with some nice click tools, even you will be able to setup
your network/modem...
But it looks, as you just regret to get it.
I give up

Perhaps when i get this one up and running properly, I will consider
upgrading, but until then I am content using the old one. I am not overly
concerned with someone attempting to get into my box, there is nothing there
that they could possible want!

I see from looking at the post that it did not keep my formatting on that

I did not make any change withing the Makefile and just recompile the
kernel and the modules.
All files are the ones from the distribution redhat 6.2
I installed them ad try to boot.
I get errors around modules, lot of references are missing, the ethe0 did
not load ....
Does it means that the sources/objects from the readhat distribution are
not the one used to build the binaires from the distribution ?
I was able to go back because I make a backup of the old
module directories
many thanks

Hello,
try
fdisk -l
shows you what disks/partitions Linux can see in your machine.
mount -t auto /dev/hda? /mnt
asuming from what you wrote above your win is somewhere on hda, but it
should
as I remember that winbloze is not able to boot unless it's on the first
disk.
Look if your win files are now below /mnt.
Lilo isn't dangerous on the mbr, it just works.
post your /etc/lilo.conf and the output from fdsik -l & mount for more
help.
Good luck

The thing is that more recent distributions are much easier to configure
then the older ones, and support a wider range of hardware. Of course
there's a educational value in blundering and trying different
solutions, but it is more gratifying to start of with a working system,
and learn from there. IIRC you're using redhat 5.2 which is three years
old, and though not completely outdated (most tools and programs still
exist, and have a lot of value today) the ease of use for a reletively
new user has greatly improved.
As for unauthorized acces, the vulnerabilities in redhat 5.2 are so
antiquitated that most standard tools won't recognize them anymore.

Thanks for the reply - the printer was connected to the computer when
Mandrake installed. Then I went to Hardrake and the printer tab at the top.
I also looked up in my Linux book and found how to talk to the printer
through the terminal window. That's about all I've done I guess.

I'm new to linux and want to install Redhat 7 on my Compaq. The computer
has approx 13 G of available space. What is the best boot loader to install
LILO?
If the installation goes bad will it damage my windows partition? and what
do I need to ensure it doesn't. The last part deals with installing NAT. I
know Redhat comes with Apache firewall so I assume there is the possibility
of installing NAT. How do I go about configuring it?
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

I'm no expert, but isn't minicom a terminal program? I.e. you use it to
connect to dial-up networks like a BBS or other non-internet related
networks.
If you want to connect with an ISP for internet work don't you need to
setup the ppp protocol? For that, maybe you might want to man pppd and
look up the wvdial package off your distribution CD or rpmfind.net.

I am trying to find the connection logs for telnetd and ftpd. I have
read the man for syslog, telnetd, and ftpd and I have not seen any
reference to the logs. Are there such logs, or do I have to write some
script for this?
I am using RedHat Linux 7.0 with a static IP and I keep getting ftpd:
FTP session closed, and telnetd: ttloop: read: Connection reset by
peer, in my syslog, but I have found no way to trace the logins. I am
debugging the server now and I am interested to know if some client on
my lan is doing this somehow, or if someone from the internet is
responsible. I am rotating and expiring my accounts and passwords, so I
do not think I have any security risk, but I would like to be able to
trace this syslog entry.
I have two clients on my lan that are running Napster that have caused
problems for my server in the past, but I think I have gotten all the
bugs worked out with it. I am also running Yahoo Messenger, Aol,
Netscape AIM, and Dialpad on my lan with two clients, but I cannot tell
if they are the cause.
Any comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Scott - I just installed Caldera OpenLinux eDesktop 2.4 on a 500 MHz
P-lll w/ 128 Meg and a 6.2GB WD Caviar drive without a hitch. The
distro sells for $29.95 boxed from Caldera, or you can get teh IDG
Caldera 2.4 *Bible* for $39.95 Both come with CD that have the Linux
distro AND application software as well.
The distro was pretty much self installing on a virgin HD; I took the
default selections from the GUI install program, and was setting up
users and passwords in about an hour and a half - including coffee and
other breaks.
BTW, you might be able to get a recent distro from either your public
library, or as a *free* cd with Linux magazine at your local bookstore.
Best of luck,

Dave,
I know this might be too simple of a fix but it worked for me just add
the line defaultroute under lock in the /etc/ppp/options file and save. See
if this works. I was having the same prob with kppp and I think this has
fixed the problem.

Sigh.
Next time you ask a friend for help, ask that they guide you through the
process of whatever you're trying to accomplish, but do things yourself.
That is the only way to learn. Let them give instructions/tips even
litteral commands, but ask questions and DO IT YOURSELF. Then when it
doesn't work YOU can try and fix it.
Now to answer your question, let me give you some advise. Give details,
what type of scanner, what interface, what doesn't work, details. If we
don't know redumentary details we can't help, if you don't mention
that your friend sacrificed the chicken to make things work, we can't
tell you that in general to get scanners to work you need to sacrifice
a pig under the full moon.
In general people use sane. /usr/doc/sane should have information,
otherwise try http://www.mostang.com/sane/
Most configuration is stored in the /etc/ directory so modify the text
files there to change system settings, /etc/sane would be a place to
start. To change setting you don't "uninstall" software, you just change
the configuration files. Only when you messed things up beyond salvation
reinstallation might solve your problems. Then use the package management
to remove the file, but since you don't tell us what distribution you're
running we cant even tell you that.
Sorry for the rant, but consider it general education, not specifically
intended to harry you.
