try "nmap -p 22 $HOSTNAME", this should tell you whether an
application is listening to port 22 or not

AIX and Linux don't like each other in secure mode.
Add 'insecure' to the options in the exports file on your Linux
box and try again.

Has anyone gotten the Creative Soundblaster PCI 16 working with
bass/treble contols available in the mixers. If so how was it done.
My card is working perfectly in Red Hat 7 with the exception of no
tone controls on any of the about 5 mixers that I have tried. Thanks

Subject: SCSI... help!
Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 10:43:12 -0500

I'm new to Linux and I recently switched my computers from Windows ME/2000
machines to dual boot Windows/Linux machines (Redhat 6.0). Both machines
have Zip drives, one on a parallel port and one on an internal (Adaptec)
SCSI card.

The parallel port zip drive I was able to configure without problem using
the mini-HOWTO (the kernel apparently already had SCSI support enabled).
The other one however...

When I do a modprobe ppa I basically get the message that no SCSI devices
are to be found... is it possible that SCSI support isn't enabled in the
kernel on this machine somehow? The install (as far as I can recall) went
the same on each machine, so I'mnot sure why it would be enabled on one and
not the other...

Is there a way to tell?

Using dmesg reveals that the system doesn't even try to look for/load any
SCSI devices (as far as I can tell).

Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated!

Chris

Looks like it was a problem with cron. I couldn't find an actual cron

it works fine now.

Yes it's backwards compatible, best speed you could hope for is ATA 66, with
the proper cable of course.

If you're talking about a USB hub, then yes, AFAIK Linux has no problems
with them and doesn't require explicit support to use them -- providing
your kernel has USB support to begin with. Most 2.2.x kernels have only
very rudimentary USB support, but 2.2.18 and the 2.4.x series have much
more extensive USB support.

Subject: anyone happen to use execpc? or familiar with sendmail?
Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 16:23:02 GMT

Hi... I am trying to setup sendmail for my redhat 6.2 box. This is a
dialup machine.
I tried the following m4 file:

divert(-1)
include(`../m4/cf.m4')
define(`confDEF_USER_ID',``8:12'')
define(`SMART_HOST',`mail.execpc.com')dnl
OSTYPE(`linux')dnl
undefine(`UUCP_RELAY')dnl
undefine(`BITNET_RELAY')dnl
FEATURE(`redirect')dnl
FEATURE(`always_add_domain')dnl
FEATURE(`use_cw_file')dnl
FEATURE(`local_procmail')dnl
FEATURE(`nouucp')dnl
FEATURE(`access_db')dnl
MAILER(procmail)dnl
MAILER(smtp)dnl
MASQUERADE_AS(execpc.com)dnl
FEATURE(`allmasquerade')dnl
FEATURE(`masquerade_envelope')dnl

I do have a NIC installed, which I have read can cause problems, and
indeed it did when I was restarting sendmail, but once I brought down
eth0, sendmail restarted without a hitch.
However, when I try to test this with the "mail" command, this is what
happens when it is trying to send through execpc (taken from the
dead.letter file):
which if you take the time to look through it, appears as if my
sendmail isn't masquerading correctly.
Has anyone set up sendmail with execpc? maybe point me to what is
wrong with my m4 file?
Thanks!!

Right. The regular Linux Telnet client doesn't do anything at all with
printer on/off escape sequences, and as far as I know, neither does the
xterm window nor the console driver. If they did, you probably would not
be asking about it.

Did you read /usr/share/sendmail/README (or where it's on your machine)
which explains the order of FEATURE/MAILER/...?

There is a ng comp.mail.sendmail which could be better for your question.

Good luck

Thanks Frank It worked great. I noticed that This version of C-Kermit
is licensed as "Open Source" so there should be no problem using it on
Linux boxes, right? I also noticed that you are one of the authors of
the "Using C-Kermit" Book. Good job.

I assure you that we will be purchasing copies of this book to help
you in the ongoing work in C-Kermit.

"from the getting started manual"
Q: Using linux single

Help! I can't remember my root password. How do I log in now?

A: Use Single-User Mode

You can log in with single-user mode, in which you can create a new root
password.

When you see the boot: prompt, type linux single to enter single-user
mode. Some of the filesystems will be mounted, and you will find a bash#
prompt when
you've entered single-user mode (note that this prompt will look
somewhat different than the prompt you're accustomed to).

Now, you can change root's password by typing

 bash# passwd root

You'll be asked to re-type the password for verification. Once you're
finished, the password will be changed and you can reboot by typing
shutdown -r now at the
prompt; then you can log in to root as before.

Hi,
I was very happy to see that Mandrake 7.2 included the ALSA drivers that let

my part (I wouldn't have had a clue what to do as I am a beginner)
But whereas cd and mp3 play seems fine, I can not play any midi sound. Is
this to be expected or is there something I can do to enable it? All of the
multimedia software seems to be installed. I tried just clicking on midi
files and also tried opening them with the midi kareoke player with no
success.
Also, what is an ogg file-- I notice when I try to burn an mp3 it becomes an
*.ogg file instead. Though playable, I would like to make mp3's. I read
the "FM" but am still foggy.

Many thanks,

Hi,

I am trying to install Slackware 7.1 on my PC on the third hard

Configuration :
Primary Master : 1.7G (Win98, FAT 32)
Primary Slave : 3.2G (Win98, FAT 32)
Secondary Master : CD ROM
Secondary Slave : 13G (Linux)

The 13G hard disk is dedicated for Linux, only 2 partitions are
created : / and swap (150M or so).

I think the LILO version is new enough to handle >1024 cylinder,
it is version 21.6-1, but I am not sure about my motherboard.
It is a very old ASUS T2P4
It is a very old ASUS T2P4 (bios 0207 beta 2) running a K6-2 450

Anyway, every time I re-run LILO, it gives the following error :

Can someone tell me if there is anything I can do ? Will it solve the

at the LILO prompt type <image_name> 1. Where Image_name is the name
of your boot image, on most systems the default is usually called
linux. This will boot you to a single user root prompt at which point
you can type passwd and assign a new password for root.

Actually, it's pretty much just like the previous ones. In Section "Screen"
the "DefaultDepth" item is the default color depth you want to start with.
Underneath that is(are) the subsection(s) "Display". For each "Display"
section you can choose the color depth and resolution modes.

X will start using the Display subsection whose Depth corresponds to the
DefaultDepth and will choose the first Mode listed under that Display. The
<Ctrl><Alt><+> and <-> sequence will cycle forward and backward through the
modes, then the color depths.

Section "Screen"
  Identifier "Screen0"
  Device "NNVIDIA GeForce DDR"
  Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24 //or whatever you want

Subsection "Display"
  Depth 24
  Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768"
EndSubsection

Subsection "Display"
  Depth 16
  Modes "1600x1280" "1280x1024"
EndSubsection

NOTE: "Device" in the "Screen" section must match the "Identifier" string in
the "Device" section. "Monitor" must match the "Identifier" string in the
"Monitor" section.

Hope that helps...

Subject: hard disk problem
Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 21:27:43 +0530

Hi ...
I have a problem with my hard disk (Seagate Barracuda ATA II)
Sometimes when I try to copy or move some file gen greater than 2-3 mb
Suddenly the following error creeps in

hda : status times out:status=0x80 {Busy}
hda :drive not ready for command
ide0:reset timed-out ,status =0x80
......
Also If I reset the machine, the BIOS does not recognize the HD.
And I have to switch off and on the machine again in order to start the
system again..

Apart from this the HD seem to be fine and works 4 days without any
problem....

The problem seem to be not so uncommon because just searching on google
I found lot of such messages with sim.. problem but could not find a
solution

Hoping someone knows the answer
thanx in advance

Subject: Problem mounting CDROM - reboot helps
Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 18:47:04 +0100

I have some problems mounting my CD-ROM device on a Red Hat 7.0 Intel
system. Sometimes I just can't mount a new medium. Rebooting usually
helps. It is not the CD (after the reboot mounting the same CD is
possible), and I do not have too much filesystems mounted.

The message mount gives me is:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom,
or too many mounted file systems
(aren't you trying to mount an extended partition,
instead of some logical partition inside?)

The filesystems I have mounted:

/dev/sda1 on / type ext2 (rw)
none on /proc type proc (rw)
usbdevfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbdevfs (rw)
/dev/sda3 on /spare type ext2 (rw)
none on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)

Anybody knows the problem?

Thx,

Christian

Subject: How do I get sound to work?
Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 17:49:11 GMT

I'm a bit new to this so here it is. I've made several attempts
trying different things I've read in here. B4 I started, Linux knew
nothing of the snd card. Now during the boot to a prompt I get a red
flagged line "device or resource busy" - FAILED. And the speakers
give a thunk and that's all.
I have RedHat 6.1. I run Gnome. The snd card according to Windows is
a Yamaha opl3-sax PCI pnp. I ran sndconfig and the chipset is there
so I tried several i/o settings. I found one that if I turn the vol
up near max I can hear the snd sample ok. Yet the cd player is quiet
and so are desktop themes. If I run sndconfig now I can't get to the
setup screen (just a blue screen) A ctrl+c will get me back to #. I
suspect I'm almost there. Any help is appreciated. Thanx.

I had the same problem when I misedited my lilo.conf to point to /dev/hda1
(my boot partition) instead of /dev/hda. Since I have LILO installed on my
MBR I have to use the latter setting. You'll have to change your boot=
argument to match where you installed LILO.

I've never done this... and this is just off the top of my head (I'm a
newbie too).

Boot into single user mode or from a floppy. Change /etc/passwd so
that the following line:

root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

Looks like this:
root::0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

See the 'x' is gone. Then reboot. You should be able to hit the enter
key when it prompts you for 'root's password. Then use the passwd
program to change root's password. Not sure if you'll need to manually
put the 'x' back into /etc/passwd after that.

Not sure if this is right but I think I read something like that
somewhere.
