Funny, When I put in my CDRW I accidentally swapped the IDE cables and both
W2K and Linux boot with the hard drive situated as the master of secondary
IDE chain (hdc) and I did nothing special for this to happen...

The subject line pretty much says it. That option has disappeared from
the make xconfig screens of the 2.4.x kernels.
Without that option being enabled, BRU2000-PE won't run, asking instead for
a seriel number. Turn it on, recompile a 2.2.18 kernel, and it works
once again.
Since its the PE edition from the old RH5.1 disk set, we don't hardly
got some more of those 'seriel number' thingies. :-)
Has it been renamed or something, or is it permanently turned on in the
later kernels?
Cheers, Gene

Can someone explain to me why the Kernel HOWTO states the order of make
as such
make dep
make bzImage
make bzlilo
make modules
make modules_install
When, obviously, either make modules or make modules_install modifies
the System.map which is read by lilo. Building a kernel in this order
always, without fail, generates boot errors.
I do `make bzlilo` last. Is this correct? If not, please state why.

I guess permanently on. It's no longer a hack. Just configure a
alias interface and see if it works.
Why does BRU need an IP alias? Does it demand its own set of IP
addresses?

It seems a lot of people are not configuring properly for their processor.
Run through the config again and choose the right one (k6).

Hi all;
Iam running RedHat 6.2 and trying to set it up as a server.
Not sure how to setup the ip numbers. It will accept a call and allow
login. But ut comes up with "Could not determine local IP address",
when I try to dialin from a mac. I just tried from a win95 box, same
error, but with some unsupported messages in /var/log/ppp.
Also should the remote computer have any particular settings, like in

I do not have any NICs, should the server have more than 127.0.0.1?

Mike,
Besides the usual reading of the Ipchains HOW-To, several articles found on
the I.net, downloaded the TrinityOS document from
http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/dranch/LINUX/TrinityOS.wri Found the
firewall script easy to read, understand, and configure for my purposes-
especially good as it gives examples of options to enable or disable
individual hosts from the transversing the firewall, provides options to
reject and deny specific sets of IP Addresses, includes information about
securing your server, and David Ranch provides downloadable files via his
site.
Hope this helps.

That's a short script I made for 2.4.0, for 2.2.x you have to
depmod -a
at least, with 2.4 this is done with modules_install automagically.
This script is asuming that /etc/lilo.conf is OK, booting /boot/vmlinuz.
#!/bin/sh
WD=/usr/src/linux
cd $WD
make dep clean bzImage modules modules_install
mv /boot/vmlinuz /boot/vmlinuz.last
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz
mv /boot/System.map /boot/Sytem.map.last
cp System.map /boot/System.map

Rob,
You need to obtain, configure, compile, and install the netatalk package.
Netatalk will allow your Linux box to act as a fileserver for your Apple.
Unfortunately I have no experience configuring this app but if its like
SAMBA on the PC side, it will give you the ability to obtain file services.
Try this website: www.umich.edu/~rsug/netatalk

That's because it is running there. I think you'll find that OS/2
really does run Windows, not emulate it. There are several versions of
OS/2, some come with an embedded copy of Windows supplied by IBM and
others make runtime patches to the copy of Win3.1 on your hard disk
and run it that way. The patches hit the memory management and DPMI
code and route calls through to the OS/2 memory manager instead of the
Win3.1 one. As far as Windows is concerned, it's actually running.

wanna bet? you are wrong. That's probably what most people use it for
is to boot into Windows or to get into Linux. That's what I use it for.
THat's the point of it: to choose your OS.

suse 6.2 and 6.3 ask me if i want to add an additional entry into
lilo.conf for any other OSes besides Linux. I choose where I want lilo
to be installed (on the MBR) and choose my label for Windows (win) and
i'm done.
do a 'man fstab' to read how to setup an extra drive that wasn't
available during boot.
