You still can do all of them once so you can have a longer break.

Why would it affect it? If he didn't run lino, then he would simply
use the old kernel.

I had to do 2 things to get my USR modem recognized by 2.2.16:

1) upgrade the serial driver to 5.05 (see http://serial.sourceforge.net/) and
2) setup /dev/tty4 for the com5 modem (see http://netllama.ipfox.com/ and
select modems, then 3COM/USR)

Let us know if this works for you.

Greetings all
I cannot print when running as a normal user. Running as root is OK.
I have read the printing howto and set the permissions accordingly.
I also have set the 'local socket' /dev/printer to group 'users' and with
write
permissions for the group. Still the printer doesn't work as a normal user!
I am using Mandrake 7.2. Is there anyone out there who can help me?
I think it's pretty mean of Mandrake (and other distros of Linux) not to
supply
a working print setup for normal users.

I have GCC is installed. But when describing how to write a program, LDP's,
books, and what not say "enter this code" & "now type this code" but none I
have found tell me how to get to the point where entering code is
appropriate.

I have heard emacs is good for C, so I enter "emacs". Then do I need to go
into "cc mode"? I read the answer is "yes" and therefore type "Meta - x" or
"alt - x", but this does not seem to do anything. Could someone throw me a
bone and tell me about the stuff I need to do in Linux before I type the
code???? I have RTFMs, but no luck.

Hi Everyone,

Is there any freeware or shareware in Linux that allows me to
control the bandwidth utilization of specific services. Right
now, I am connecting my linux box (running Redhat 6.2 with
kernel 2.4.2) to an SDSL connection (256kps upload/download).
I am running both FTP and telnet services on the same box.
The problem is that everytimes someone is downloading a
large file from my linux box, the ftp server will basically
consume all the bandwith thus making life very miserable for
other users who use interactive applications such as http, mail
and telnet until the ftp session is completed. I would like set
aside a maximum of 192kbps for the ftp server and 56kbps
for telnet server. Can this be done on the linux box?
 I know that checkpoint has a software called flood-gate that
does similar thing but I am looking for freeware or shareware.
I am really desparated for a solution. Please help.

Many thanks.

What about the spool directory? Check the rights there (and the

I believe you have to set up your sound card to work with each user, not
just as root. Red Hat 7.0, and Mandrake 6.1 required me to set up sound

I've been fortunate enough to be able to successfully download and install
Java 2 version 1.3 beta on my LinuxPPC2000 machine - and the demos even run
correctly. I'd like to update the PATH environment variable on my system so
all the Java programmers who log in to my box (actually me, using a
different ID than root) will be able to compile and run their Java apps
using the "javac" and "java" tools found in my java install's /bin
directory.

I'm not quite sure which initialization script this should go in - I'm only
72-hours down the Linux admin learning path.

Any cogent suggestions, or informative links, would be greatly appreciated.

I have Mandrake 7.2 also and tried RedHat 7. RedHat found my sound card
also. With Mandrake I ran sndconfig and it worked there, but not the midi I
have a crystal 4236/37/38 chipset also. Then when I got out it didn't work.
Then I found an the extra io of 330 was the problem with part of it. I
deleted that and left "options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1" only. That worked
for the sound. I still can't get a audio CD to work or midi.
While on the subject of Mandrake 7.2 I also couldn't access my CDROM,
CD-Writer or Floppy in Desktop or in the file manager. Mandrake wrote
/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom2 and /mnt/fd0 at the beginning of the fstab file.
It also wrote fs=iso9660 for the CD's which I had to change to just plan
iso9660. There were several other changes in the fstab I had to make also.
Then rescan my Desktop and it was available there and file manager.
Then I tried to connect to the internet. Well, ppp deamon wasn't loaded. I'm
sorry, but the system came with a LT WinModem. So, since it couldn't detect
the modem it didn't load ppp. Had to install ppp and then the ltmodem5.78
then got connected. But then only with Kppp. GnomePPP won't work.
Got a NetworkEverywhere Ethernet Card also (ie Linksys) NC100. It didn't
detect that either. I can't test out what else it didn't load since it
didn't detect that card either till they install the cable modem next month.
Well, while I am ranting I think I will just put RedHat 7 back on the
computer tomorrow morning. At least I think the basics will work if I
remember right. I have been messing with this Mandrake 7.2 for several days
that I have kindof forgot about RedHat.
I can understand that Linux is still kind of new, but if people with as much
computer knowledge as me has trouble just getting a few basic function that
we have been used to having work. Then how in the #$$% are your normal
everyday Joe's ever going to want to deal with this? They will stick with
Microsoft! I tried to get my Dad to install it on his computer when they
came down for a visit and now I am glad he didn't take me up on it.
At least if I have any problems getting RedHat to work tomorrow when I
reinstall it I will be able to get the BASIC functions working, cause I had
to learn them on Mandrake 7.2.

Thanks for letting me Rant. And try the above settings on your sound. Put
them in the modules.conf file.

Emacs is just a text editor, like MS Notepad. (ha) But, its powerful.
This "cc mode" will only make it easier to type in your code (keywords
highlighted, etc). There are ways to make it use a compiler and such, but I
haven't bothered with that. Basically, you enter your code in a text editor
(like emacs) then you go to the command line, type

$ gcc -Wall -O2 -pedantic -o <output file> <file to compile>

or whatever options you like.

emacs enters cc mode when i open a file with a C source extension... like
"hw5.c"

If I've just competely gone under the level of you were asking, sorry!

I'm not exactly sure what you want to know, but a lesson on enviromental
variables:

if you type ECHO $PATH, you can see your current path.

if you type EXPORT PATH=$PATH:/bin it will add /bin to the end of your path
variable.

or you cant EXPORT PATH= then just list the directories in the order you
want them to be checked.

I taught myself a good bit of linux in the last couple months, mainly
through the O'Rielly book "Running Linux". Its a good one.

Oh yea, and have you made sure that those javac and java's are being used
already? /bin would generally be in the PATH already...

Subject: RH 7 Instalation Troubles - LILO
Date: Sun, 25 Feb 2001 02:14:21 -0500

A bit of a problem:

I recently re-installed RH 7 after happily running it for several
months. However, I must have screwed something up. I installed LILO to
the MBR, but I didn't know about the 1024 limit. Now, when I start my
computer the LI show up, but then it freezes (doesn't continue to say
LILO). As a result, I can't access my windows partition without using a
boot disk to get into dos (windows won't work though), otherwise I can
only use a Linux boot disk to access Linux.

My questions are:
Can I get windows working again without formating/re-installing
everything on that drive? (i.e. how do I regain control of the MBR?)

How can I avoid this in the future? I would like to dual boot win 98 and
RH7 but this LILO problem is giving me some trouble.

What is the 'right' way of setting up a dual boot of win 98 and Red Hat
7? I had it working, but months of toying around with it for the first
time left it with a really messed up config, so I tried re-instaling and
here we are.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I need to set up many email accounts on my server but the users do not need

How do I create POP3 email accounts without creating user accounts on my

Sorry, but you are wrong. LILO can be used to boot any bootable OS. I'm
replying from a machine which uses LILO to boot either MSWindows98 (on
my Primary Master IDE drive) or Linux (on my Primary Slave IDE).

Not true. There are plenty of docs on how to set up LILO for multiboot
(along with docs on how to multiboot from NT's loader and OS2's loader).
Take a look at the Linux Documentation Project at
http://www.linuxdoc.org/ (try the "Linux+DOS+Win95+OS2",
"Linux+NT-Loader", or "Linux+Win95" mini-HOWTOs, you also might want to
read the "LILO" mini-howto). Additionally, the lilo package comes with
an excellent guide to lilo/LILO configuration and use in it's README
file.

While not for your layout, this example (from my dual boot) might help.
/dev/hda is my Win98 drive (C: is /dev/hda1), and /dev/hdb is my Linux
drive (/dev/hdb2 is my /boot filesystem). If left alone, this config
will default boot Win98.

~ $ more /etc/lilo.conf
# LILO configuration file
#
# Start LILO global section
#
#
boot = /dev/hda
delay = 50
vga = normal
# End LILO global section
#----------------------------------------
# MSWin98 bootable partition config begins
other = /dev/hda1
  label = win98
  table = /dev/hda
# MSWin98 bootable partition config ends
#---------------------------------------
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /boot/vmlinuz
  root = /dev/hdb2
  label = linux
  read-only
# Linux bootable partition config ends
#---------------------------------------

I've had similar errors several times after restoring complete
systems.
AFAIK, the X server itself still *must* be setuid root in order
to work properly.
Somehow the permissions weren't restored properly, I guess.
You can fix that easily with a "chmod 4755 /usr/X11R6/bin/XFrre86_SVGA"
(or ..."xfree86" if it's XFree 4.x) as root.

I am seting up Debian Potato and X11. My mouse is an ALPS GlidePoint connected
to the PS/2 mouse port. I've tried several of the most popular protocols but
the mouse pointer will not move. I assume the device is /dev/mouse. It was
working on a previous installation attempt of X11.
