Has anyone encountered a problem with the 2.4.* kernels and
interference with the sound card?
My configuration:
RH7 with kernel 2.4.2
Athlon 1000 768M
Matrox G400 AGP 32M
Sound Blaster PCI128

I did have the sound working properly with an earlier 2.4 kernel but now
when ever I try to play sound (be it 'cat something.au > /dev/audio' or
through Real Player) I get what sounds like static interference almost
as if two programs are accessing the sound card at once. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Randy

Wow, problem solved! That was awesome! I tried Villly's method first,
because I learned of it first. But maybe the second one works too. Mr.
Davis suggested in an independent e-mail that I do this:
"
Try a hostname linuxp100.lillysoftware.com
I seem to remember it needed a dotted name.
"
Villy's method was:
"
Change the /etc/hosts to:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.1.9 Emachine Emachine.localdomain
"
This method worked. I am not sure why Install doesn't take care of this on
its own. Anyway, now sendmail loads in exactly .2 seconds.

Thanks all!!!!!!!

I recently installed linux onto my machine and have managed to get a system
going that meets my ever need (wohoo!)... however i've noticed one small
problem which is rather annoying since i often need to access my computer
from school or from work. Not to mention i host my own DNS names, and a few
others for friends, as well as websites and i'm planning on setting up a
email server to play with.

Here goes...

If i leave my box logged into X all day long (no locked screen, licq
running) it will stay online and i can access it everywhere.

If i leave my box with a locked screen in X all day long (with licq
running) it will still stay online and i can access it everywhere.

If i leave it in at the consol in any state once the screen goes blank my
network card goes to sleep iad my box will not respond to ANY external
requests until i force an outgoing request first.

I'm running Slackware 7.1 with the 2.4.2 kernel (has this problem under the
2.2.16 as well) I'm hoping it's just a configuration error on my part, but
so far most of the settings are installation defaults. I've incountered
this problem with both a 3Com 3C509B PCI and a Intel EtherExpress Pro PCI
network card.

If anyone could offer any help that would be much appreciated.
If you could also cc: any replies to me via email at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanx.

Are you sure lilo.conf points dos/win to hda1 not hdb1? dos

Hi,
I installed Mandrake7.2 as workstation:
In this set up I was unable to run sndconfig, But, I had HADWARE update
icon under the DrakConf utility.

To use the sndconfig, I reinstalled as a server. sndconfig worked and
got the sound card worked. But now I dont see the hardware update. I
still have problems with setting up my Ethernet card and an AOPEN F56
modem.

Any help please.

Thanks,
Jey.

Hi,

I'm having problems getting a SCSI HP C1533A to work in my RedHat 6.2

As soon as I try to write a tar archive to the tape, I get...

I only created the stinit.def file today, after searching around newsgroups
for ideas as to what I'm missing. It didn't make a lot of [any!] difference.

Anybody got any ideas as to what I could be missing/doing wrong
here?

Rob:

I just got a 3com 3c509b-tpo working in my Linux (Red Hat 7.0).

You need to go to the 3com web site and dowload the latest Windows
drivers. That download includes some utilities that are run from DOS.
The one you need is called 3c5x9cfg.exe. Boot from a DOS diskette,
and use this utility to configure the card. I used auto-config, and
it selected a reasonable IRQ, I/O address, and so on.

Once you get the card configured, you need to add 3c509 to the
/etc/modules.conf.

There can only be one extended partition. If a linux it will be
invisible to dos. If dos both linux and dos can use it. If you
try and force the linux fdisk and install program to use two
extended partitions all kinds of confusion and installation errors
will result, and not every fdisk will let you try to do this too
as you seem to have found.

Also if you can try to use a third party partitioning program in
these multi o/s setups but if not possible only each o/s fdisk
for each o/s partition. Unavoidably dos for the extended but
each o/s for each logical in it. And be consistent with the
fdisk distrobution/versions. They differ.

No problems on my install on a laptop which is always a good test.
Just read the readme/install files first just in case something
applies to your system. Be careful about the intitial choice as the
normal will wipe out the entire disk and obtusely it insists on a swap
partition even tho you may not want one (plenty of ram).

You will need the latest pcmcia version with the tulip driver and it
may be very flakey still apparently. The modem works so far on mine
but I have not verified the ethernet yet. Anyway in general the card
looks nice with the leds and the realport is great but speeds stink.

Add the following to your /etc/X11/XF86Config

Device "/dev/psaux"
Protocol "IMPS/2"
ZAxisMapping 4 5
Buttons 3

Depending on your Window Manager/Desktop Environment you might have to start
imwheel. See the documentation of imwheel for details on how to configure
and start automatically.

This is quite true. My problem is that my laptop has a integrated 3com
network card. You can also use append lines in lilo to switch on different
schemes at boot time. In this way, if you have one pcmcia setup for at work
with dhcp, you can load a scheme file at boot which loads that information
and if you have a wireless card or need a second (or third and on)
configuration, you can load additional schemes. Definitely the switching
using cardctl is handy!

I had some problems getting SuSE 7.1 to support schemes using the latest
pcmcia-cs though. I completely replaced the pcmcia sources using the
tarball archives and could not reliably get scheme support at boot. I could
easily switch though when using cardctl.

Why not enable the encrypted password option on the samba server? Which

Well,

I wanted to upgrade my RH 6.2 system to the latest kernel
and that requires the newer GLIBC.

I don't want RH 7 because ClearCase v4.1 runs only on RH6.2.

So, is there any documentation that a relative newbie to
LINUX can follow to upgrade their RH 6.2 to the latest
kernels, and bring GLIBC along with it?
