I'm rethinking that, now. The machine has 8250 UARTS (which doesn't
surprise me, but I forgot about that issue). Maybe I can find a 16550 card
cheap.

I have heard of the LRP. I may look into that, thanks.

I just installed RedHat ver 6.1 using 'KDE workstation', but there is
a problem to use 'startx'. The error message follows-

execve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno 2)
 -X11TransSocketUnixConnect: Can't connect: errno=111 giving up
xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): Unable to connect to X server
 xinit: No such process (errno 3);

I tried to use '..bin/xf86config' to configure it but fail. I
appreciate any idea why it happened. Thanks

Thanks for the info. I'm really hoping that my current WIN98R2 will be the last
WIN I have to use. I wasn't aware of win4lin. I'm hoping to buy a new system
in the next week or so and the vendor has specifically mentioned being able to
install VMWare which is what prompted my question.

Hi all,

I've got my email all working (sendmail and pop), but I need to know how I
allow people NOT on my network to send email. I looked at the access file, and
added the ip's of machines allowed to relay, but there is no guarantee that
they are on a known ip (DHCP). Can I setup sendmail to work with anyone with a
username and password on my system regardless of the ip??? What would I need to
change?

Hi all,

I've got my email all working with sendmail and pop3. There seems to be a
problem when I connect to my linux box to check for pop3 mail, there is a lag
time of about 15~20 seconds before any connection is made, once it is made, all
works fine. I cannot see any errors etc. Any thoughts on why there is a lag to
connect???

Hi,

Can someone tell me the answer to two question about emacs at the most
novice of levels. Both relate to the use of Emacs under X

1: How do I get the delete key to delete the character it is on rather
than the one to the left, in the way it does outside X

2: How can I get the scroll bar on to the right side of the frame
instead of the left? (How do I get rid of it completely for that
matter)

These must be asked lots of times, but I cannot find the answer :-(

Could some one point me, (or even throw me) in the right direction!

My first guess would be a DNS issue of some sort. The way to check for
sure would be to find out your IP address, log on to your machine, put
your IP address in the /etc/hosts file, then try to connect again. If
it happens instantly, that's the problem.

I purchased a copy of "Red Hat Linux 6.0 - Unleashed" and have been
unable to install this O/S on my laptop even though I've successfully
installed it on my desktop. I've followed all of the possible
installation instructions from the book. Part of the problem is that
I have to use a swappable CD and Floppy drive on my laptop and cannot
use both simultaneously. The instructions in the book indicate that I
can install directly from the CD using the 'linux ks' or 'expert'
commands. Neither of these worked for me.

My system information is:
Current O/S - Win 98
Intel celeron processor
128mb ram
1gb partition set up for Linux

I would appreciate any and all assistance/advice.

Thank you,

Eh, actually I meant '/sbin/fuser -vm /mnt/cdrom'. Then you will get to

Did you also try the aix7xxx driver ? AFAIK only a older version of the

IIRC AHA2920C) uses the aic7xxx SCSI chip.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi.

I'm a Linux rookie. I am having trouble figuring out how to
change the way X looks. The fonts and icons are smaller
than the first time I installed, and the screen seems to
flicker ever so slightly..

When I first installed RHL 7.0 (kernel 2.2.16-22), X went in
fine and I had no problems with GNOME. But, I had to
re-install RHL. When I did, I again did a custom
installation. I don't know what I did differently from the
first time.

There was no 4MB option for video memory, so I chose the one
suggested, 16,xxx. (When I used 4096 K, X wouldn't work at
all.)

My horizontal and vertical refresh rates are set as
described in my Dell monitor documentation. My chip is and
Intel 810e, so I chose Intel 810. (It worked out the first
time, right?).

The GNOME desktop controls don't seem to have any way to
address this problem. Or perhaps my Windows experience is
blinding me to the obvious. I have read man pages and parts
of two different books and I still can't find my problem
described, much less corrected.

If you know of the right man page or can suggest on on-line
resources I would be grateful.

In the mean time I'm become very friendly with the bash
interface, which is all to the good.

Thanks,

Damon

I thought someone recently said in passing that it was possible to add

How do you do it without WIN trashing the MBR and Linux?

Do you then have to use something like System Commander to get a dual

Thanks.

I have always been real happy with cpio. It preserves all times, modes,
owwnerships, etc.

While in root of source partition:

find . -mount -print | cpio -pdm dest_partition_root_pathname

to copy the entire filesystem from source to dest

I have copied entire multipartitioned linux installs this way.

Don't forget to run lilo to install boot code on the new drive. You'll need to
edit /etc/fstab too.
