I think this is merely a nicety rather than a requirement. But you could
change it to read GLoria Synergy if you like.

There are other tools - I personally do the initial configuration with
xf86cfg and then tidy up any errors by hand.

Try this - this manually sets the memory clock and might be the right
thing to tweak. There isn't any other obvious Clock tweak... but be
warned - this may hang your machine, so make sure that you can boot to
runlevel 3 if you have to reboot. The other two options below are
safer. (Just in case you don't know, to boot to runlevel 3 you would
type 'linux 3' at the LILO prompt - this is the text-only startup).

Section "Device"
  Identifier    "Device[0]"
  VendorName    "Elsa"
  Driver        "glint"
  BoardName     "Winner2000Office"
  BusID         "1:0:0"
  Option        "SetMClk" "150"
EndSection

One other possibility is to force the chipset detection rather than
letting it probe for it. This would look like

Section "Device"
  Identifier    "Device[0]"
  VendorName    "Elsa"
  Driver        "glint"
  BoardName     "Winner2000Office"
  ChipSet       "pm2"
  BusID         "1:0:0"
EndSection

or possibly the 'pm2v' chipset instead of the 'pm2' if this doesn't do
it.

The order of the Section "Device" doesn't matter, but it's easier to
read in this order :-)

Cheers,
Toby Haynes

Install Windows, boot Linux from floppy or cd-rom, then make your lilo.conf
looking like this :

# Start of /etc/lilo.conf
boot    = /dev/hda
vga     = normal
read-only
prompt
timeout = 100 # Time in 1/10 seconds to choose which OS to boot.
                         # When over, the first position will boot.

image  = /boot/vmlinuz  # That's my fucking kernel
label  = l                          # Type l and Linux will boot -great !
root   = /dev/hdb3
initrd = /boot/initrd

other = /dev/hda2 # This is to boot for have a look on Bluescreens
label  = w                  # Type w and Win will boot -uarrgh !
# End of /etc/lilo.conf

Insert your /dev/hd* . After editing /etc/lilo.conf, don't forget to run
/sbin/lilo.

Subject: Problem with SMC 1211TX Ethernet card
Date: Wed, 07 Mar 2001 20:31:24 GMT

I have RedHat 7.0 installed (with the 2.4 kernel test version), although
I don't think that the fact that it is a beta has anything to do with my
problem. I am trying to load the 8139too.o module, but it won't
recognize the presence of the card.

I checked in /proc/pci and found this:
  Bus  0, device   9, function  0:
    Ethernet controller: PCI device 0001:1211 (rev 16).
      IRQ 9.
      Master Capable.  Latency=32.  Min Gnt=32.Max Lat=64.
      I/O at 0xa400 [0xa4ff].
      Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xdf800000 [0xdf8000ff].

I would guess that since it is not detected as an SMC 1211TX, the driver
doesn't recognize it as valid hardware.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Thanks

I've got a weird problem. My modem won't pick up an outside call it receives
while X-Windows is running. It just rings and rings. If I terminate
X-Windows, it then picks up. Once the pick-up has occurred, I can then restart
X-Windows and the modem will stay online and connected.

I'm guessing that X is somehow blocking the port my modem is on and
subsequently doesn't care when it is restarted and the port is in use. Any
ideas on how to resolve this one?

During the rh7 install, the video chipset is not detected properly...Why I
dunno, but after you finish with the install run Xconfigurator and the
chipset will detect the 810e which you should select.

The flicker is probably due to an incorrect refresh rate (which can damage
your monitor). What exactly does your monitor list, and what exactly did you
set?

Why should any ftp/telnet proccesses run, if they are run from inetd

Always better to use ssh/scp..:-)

Show some data (ie. grep ftp /etc/inetd.conf) and I'm sure someone will

I try to set up networking on my old computer (486) and I discover the
following problems:

invoking ifconfig I get this message

The dmesg command contains the following lines:

On my Laptop, where everything works dmesg delivers:

Check if a line says 'disable = yes' in /etc/xinetd/{ftp,telnet} -
change it to 'disable = no'.

inetd does not exist on RedHat 7.0 - it was replaced by xinetd.

Ah..Thx.

Asuming it does the same as the inetd I know, why is it called xinetd, are
you suposed

(It does? I guess that depends on your configuration ...)

Which distribution are you running? X keyboard configurations may differ
among them.

You may want to consult the Emacs FAQ (use "Help -> Manuals -> Emacs FAQ"
from the emacs toolbar) and
 http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Keyboard-and-Console-HOWTO-5.html
 http://www.ibb.net/~anne/keyboard.html
There is also
 http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/BackspaceDelete/

Remember that you can always use C-d to delete at point.

Put

(set-scroll-bar-mode 'right)

in your .emacs file.

Actually, for compatibility with a variety of emacs versions, I use

(if window-system
    (cond
     ((fboundp 'set-scroll-bar-mode) (set-scroll-bar-mode 'right))
     ((boundp 'scroll-bar-mode)
      (setq scroll-bar-mode 'right) (load "scroll-bar"))
    )
)

Well, the config format is _quite_ different. Instead of just having a
single line in /etc/inetd.conf, you now have to either put some lines in
/etc/xinetd.conf or dump a file in /etc/xinetd.d/.

In fact services actually can be configured from ntsysv...

(1) You can pass the string "mem=128M" to the kernel when booting. What
method do you use to boot? (Depending on your hardware, it might need
"127" instead of "128".)

(2) You can try a newer kernel; these have smarter memory-detection
methods.
