Your assumptions were correct. the 20GB Drive D is a separate hard drive and
not a partition

Hello All!

I've only been running Linux for a couple of weeks so please
bear with me!

Ok, here's my problem. I'm having a difficult time
installing a Linksys "EtherFast" 10/100 LAN card. I've
looked through the HOWTO's online, the Red Hat site, and
other places but, I'm stuck! So, I'd appreciate any help
anyone here could offer.

First, the details!

I'm running Red Hat 7, with kernel version 2.2.16

When I look in /proc/pci I see the following:

Bus 0, device 9, function 0:
Ethernet controller: Unknown vendor Unknown Device (rev
17).
Vendor id=1317. Device id=985.
Medium Devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. IRQ 11. Master
capable.
Latency=32.  Min Gnt=255.Max Lat=255
I/O at 0x7800 [0x7801].

I tried installing the tulip module for the the card:

]#insmod tulip
Using /lib/modules/2,2,16-22smp/net/tulip.o
/lib/modules/2.2.16-22smp/net/tulip.o: init_module: Device
or resource busy
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module
parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters

So, I tried:

]#insmod tulip io=0x7800 irq=11
Using /lib/modules/2,2,16-22smp/net/tulip.o
/lib/modules/2,2,16-22smp/net/tulip.o: invalid parameter
parm_io

I also opened the box back up to make sure the card was in
firmly. I've tried it in 2 different PCI slots. I'm not
quite certain what to do next. I'd like to know what is
causing the errors. The man page for insmod wasn't very
helpful. I was under the impression (from what I read at
the Linksys site) that I shouldn't have to do anything as
drastic as recompiling the kernel in Red Hat to install the
module.

Thanks in advance! If there's more info I should provide, I
can do that! :o)

The parameters found this way didn't help yet. Is nobody else here experienced
with ALSA midi synth drivers?

There is a thread in alt.os.linux.mandrake from two days ago about your
problem with ALSA. There was no resolution except ALSA must
specifically support the card, and that one guy got it to work with the
latest drivers. Doesn't help much.

I had the exact same setup and the exact same problem. I ended up using
the driver from www.scyld.com. It's not fun to compile it with the gcc
compiler on RH7.0. Download netdriver-2.1-2.src.rpm from scyld, unpack
it, follow the instructions for RH7.0. After you compile it, you copy
the tulip.o driver manually in /lib/modules, or you make the rpm and
install it.

I am trying to install Linux 6.2 on a system running Windows ME.
I have System Commander 2000 for partitioning my HD and
running dual OS's. Can 6.2 run without DOS? I believe Win ME
does not use it (DOS) anymore.

I also have Linux for Windows 6.5 but didn't notice it
won't work with Windows ME. Is there a fix for this
or a work around?

Thanks for any help given

Subject: possible reasons for a Kernel Panic: VFS: cannont mount.. ?
Date: Thu, 08 Mar 2001 01:15:53 GMT

Ok im upgrading from 2.2.13 kernel to 2.4.2. I compiled in everything I
thought I needed and got

Kernel Panic: VFS: Cannot mount root on (3,3)

on reboot
now i asked around for the common causes and:
1) (3,3) is the correct device (/dev/hda3) and Lilo was run after the new
kernel was in place
2) the only filesystems on the disk are ext2 and linux swap, support was
compiled into the kernel
3) the partition table was made with cfdisk that comes with slack 7.0,
support for that was in the kernel

to be safe i tried a monolithic,
support-for-all-filesystems-and-partition-tables kernel. no go. the 2.2.13
kernel still boots fine

I also noticed that on booting, the 2.4.2 kernel sees the drive, but never
runs a partition check.

anyone have any idea what the possible cause could be?

thanks in advance,

-James

What would you like to read? [I_like_2B@home or ?*]
this is a HateMSProviders scroll! it says:

I'm not a graphics guy, my suggestion is to install something like
Mandrake 7.2 which is _very_ very X.... But I'll take a shot on this one
too....

you should try version 3.3.6.... it has better 3d support in a lot of
cases.

a newer version may help as well, but they may still be working out some
problems with your card.... not a graphics guy so I don't remember....

the chunk it's complaining about is here:

now, I'm not a graphics guy, but I don't remember ever seeing a comma
seperated field for this. I would change the HorizSync to something
like 30-40....

> (EE) Problem parsing the config file
> (EE) Error from xf86HandleConfigFile()

not being able to parse the config file on something like 'HorizSync' is
a bad thing. But probably fixable in the config file.

Subject: Dual Boot Scenario
Date: Wed, 7 Mar 2001 21:03:00 -0500

I would like to set up a dual boot for Win2K / Linux 7.

Current Build:
IDE0, master: 10GB drive w/ Linux 7---> boot record on /root partition
My Windows HDDs are on a ATA100 PCI Card:
BUS1: 20GB w/ Win2K boot (NTFS)
BUS2: 30GB storage (NTFS)

During the Linux install, Disk Druid did not recognize the 2 HDD's connected
to the ATA100 PCI card. It only recognized the HDD on the primary IDE BUS,
the only HDD on the bus and the one I wanted to install Linux on. The Win2K
OS install existed before I installed Linux.

With both OS's installed, only Win2K loads. I assume that since I set Linux
to put the boot record on the root partition and not the MBR, that upon
bootup the computer only sees the Win2K MBR on my HDD connected to the
ATA100 Card.

I have tried modifying the boot.ini file on my Win2K disk to reference a
BOOTSECT.lnx file I made in Linux by using: dd if=/dev/hda5 of=/bootsect.lnx
bs=512 count=1 After I modified the boot.ini to reference this file, upon
reboot, I am given the choice for Linux, but booting it is unsuccessful.

Is there a problem using different hard disks? Can I not use NTLDR to boot
Linux on another physical drive? Can I use LILO to boot Win2K if Linux
doesn't even recognize the other HDDs connected to the ATA100 PCI card?

What suggestions do you have?

After playing around briefly with Mandrake 7.0 a year or so back, I gave up
on Linux and went back to Windows (I know that's blasphemy in this group,
but that's a discussion for another day.)

Anyway, I still keep an eye on this group and noticed your post. The
following may or may not help:

When I was using Mandrake, I nearly pulled my hair out trying to get the
sound to work. It worked fine in Windows but wouldn't work at all in Linux.
I'd always get the "device or resource busy" message. I finally discovered
that before booting Linux, I needed to go into BIOS and set "Plug and Play
Aware OS" to "no" for Linux. For Windows, I'd set it to "yes." After doing
this, sound always worked fine in Linux.

Thats crazy, isn't it? Surely you don't have fixed frequencies! and
at such low frequencies! You want

     HorizSync 31.5-55
     VertRefresh 50-90

Or something equally reasonable.

Surely you are joking! That would be a ten year old model at about 14"
and incapable of anything but 640x480. Is it?

Too small, you mean!

Nothing else could match those figures you gave. 800x600 at a stretch
maybe.

Win Me does still use DOS (It is based on it, WinXP will supposedly stop
using DOS, like WinNT).

Linux never touches DOS, it is a completely separate OS (and a far sight
more powerful too). To install linux, use System Commander to shrink
your Windows partition so you have at least 1.5 gig (preferably more)
which is unpartitioned. Then run the linux install and it will guide
you through

The work around is to not use Linux for windows, since it is very slow
and only as stable as windows, not as stable as linux (since it runs in
a window on your desktop)

I'm just starting to play with some linux distributions, and am
interested in suggested partitioning for a single user system on a 4
gig drive? I've been reading much of the installation howtos and they
all have different suggestions. I'd like to hear some real world
thoughts.

Thanks

Yes, free!

Free for downloading yourself over the net though. If you want a nice
convenient CDROM, installation support, manual, and so forth, then you
have to pay (though not that much).
