I investigated further and looked in the rp8_requires file in the rpm...
my system has all files/libs etc. noted.... so yes, libc6 is there.

Thanks for the prod, but sign me Still Stumped!

Greetings All
I have a Mandrake 7.2 system and it uses Autofs to automatically mount
and unmount drives. I have it working brilliantly but on shutdown I get
the error message:

hdc: The drive reports both 100663296 and 0 bytes as its capacity

This message relates to the internal ZIP drive which is set up on hdc. A
friend of mine has the same sort of problem with his parallel port ZIP
drive, which reports an error of:

scsi: disk i/o error dev 08:00 sector 0 unable to read part/table

The drives work OK during operation but only seem to give this error on
shutdown. Have we got something horribly wrong? Does anyone know how to
set the ZIP drives up so that no error messages come up on shutdown?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Could anyone recommend some good online reading for setting up
Sendmail, qpopper, and whatever else in RH7? I wouldn't mind hearing
a convincing argument for using qmail instead, though I'm sure I can
find archives of plenty of that around here -- I just haven't had

Charles:

See:

http://www.linuxports.com/howto/ppp/x425.htm

The three reasons this can be happening are summarized as:

"You are not correctly logging into the server"

"You are not starting PPP on the server"

"The remote PPP process is slow to start"

The few times I've heard of this, often fiddling with the last problem
is the first place to start on your end..

We can tell since you posted in html and included an ivy.gif
attachment. Please post news in plain text.

First you have to determine what type of modem you have ISA with jumpers,
PnP (with or without jumpers), PCI or pcmcia (pc card) and that is is not
a controllerless modem (aka, Windmodem), although, limited support for
those is at http://www.linmodems.org/

See what 'demsg' command or /var/log/messages shows for what you think
your modem is. Just leave out the leading zero of the device number when
referring to the serial port. The following is an example where ttyS2
does not show the proper UART because default irq is not correct for what
is actually the infrared port (my pc card modem ends up as ttyS1).

ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
ttyS02 at 0x03e8 (irq = 4) is a 8250

Test it with 'minicom' to see if you get any response to AT commands.

On the KDE menu have you tried Internet, Internet Dialer?

umm..

Not to ask the obvious, but somebody's got to:

You *did* have the Red Hat cd in the cd-rom drive, didn't you?

And it was the *install* cd, not one with doc's on it or sources?

I am trying to install SUSE Linux 7.1 on to a SCSI hard drive
controlled by an AdvanSys ABP5140 adapter. Unfortunately, the
installation program YaST2 doesn't recognise the SCSI hard drive
although it sees the IDE ones.

When I try to install the AdvanSys module, it asks for the parameter
and gives an example of a parameter as "afc_iopf lag=1
afc_ioport=0x110".  I don't understand what this means.

Red Hat's rpm system is a *little* like M$oft's *.cab system.

It packages software into a file that can be installed with simple
commands. Beyond that, a database archives the state of the rpm's
on a system, etc etc; and it's even possible to create your own rpm's
(try that with M$oft.. ;-)

See: man rpm

> 1. Is it similar thing like 'ar'?

tar? It goes beyond archiving/compression.

The usual (simple) syntax is rpm -v <install-options> [your.rpm.file.name.here]

(WARNING: All following information is correct as I understand things,
but I have been known to be wrong, on occasion.)

I think the 2xRAM formula derives from (old?) BSD UNIX variants
where the RAM was mirrored into swap (for paging space) when it
was allocated and the additional swap was for virtual memory
and/or process swapping.

Currently Linux kernels use RAM + SWAP as the largest amount of
virtual memory a process can have. (Kernel memory + a few other
things are subtraced from available RAM first).

Also, the 128Mb maximum has been lifted for swap partitions.

My system currently has:

$ swapon -s
Filename Type Size Used Priority
/dev/hda1 partition 461120 1296 -1
/dev/hdc1 partition 512024 0 -2

Which gives me almost 1Gb of swap space (almost none of which gets used).

I'm trying to set up a D-Link de-660ct pcmcia network card on my laptop
(Toshiba 2545xcdt) on Redhat 7.0 (2.2.16-22).

cardctl status and cardctl config shows that the system recognizes the
card, but cardctl ident tells me "no product info avail"

I tried adding some info in network.opts (it was blank), but I don't think
it's being read. ifconfig shows only 'lo' available.

What is a quick and dirty way of setting this up? The card will be
installed indefinitely, I don't need hot-swapping capability.

How did you get the bootdisk and the CD? Were these something you

make the default run level: 3, and type: startx -- into an X session

when it crashes I usually find my way (via Alt+F1 etc...) to the terminal
where I initiated run level 5 (X)

it usually has a dump of what went wrong right there....

I did exactly what you wrote. However, when I boot the thing, the
machine tries to do file system checking even though the fifth and
sixth fields are both zero in /etc/fstab. The machine then stops
and asks me to do something in a single-user mode on a read-only
file system of / (the root partition). It appears that the SuSE-7.0
configuration somehow assumes that / is formated as ext2.

Are you using redhat?

Thanks.

I found this on the 'realplayer' site somewhere and it does work.

You must use a "--ignorearch" option. I assume this means ignore the=20
architecture of the system. The two dashes are required.
