http://rpmfind.net

This site is extremely valuable in letting you locate the latest release of
an RPM and download it.

Thanks for the fast answer.

Eh, actually it has got no RAM, that's why I ask. I could go for 128Mb
RAM and a 45 Gb disk or just 256Mb RAM. Perhaps I could find money for
more, but I do not really think so... The box is not going to do
anything else than proxying (well, also network filtering, but that
should not take up huge amounts of memory).

Actually I believe the 45Gb disk to be faster than the 3Gb one (I do not
know the speeds of the 3Gb one). Yeah, I know the usage of IDE disks is
discouraged, but there is not money for scsi...

Thanks for the link. I'm still a little puzzled whether to choose the
45Gb+128Mb or the 3Gb+256Mb. I think it will be the 3Gb+256Mb - any
opinions?

This is easy to do, if you install Linux after Win2K, just let it put LILO
in the MBR and depending on what what distro's installer and version you
use it'll either detect Win2K and add it to the LILO menu automatically, or
you'll add it by hand in /etc/lilo.conf after you first boot Linux. All
you need is:

other = /dev/hda2
  label = Win2000
  table = /dev/hda

I'm not even sure that last line is necessary. It boots just fine. Also
remember Win2K can run its own boot manager, so presumably you could get
it to run Linux. But that's probably going to be harder to get working
than just using LILO. Win2K is quite happy to be booted off LILO, and
doesn't try to rewrite the MBR (it might if you try to re-partition the
disk from inside Win2K)

If you install Win2K after Linux, it'll overwrite the MBR, you can just
boot from a boot floppy or your install CD if it has a "rescue" mode
like Red Hat's and reinstall LILO.

One advantage of LILO over most other disk managers is that you can boot
Linux from anywhere on the disk (no 1024 cylinder limit) on the most
recent versions, if your BIOS is also fairly recent, which gives you
more flexibility in how to manage your disk.

What have you got in /etc/hosts.deny? You could very well be denying
access.

If you just do a custom install when you load the OS it seems to sort
things out. My strategy was just to install it all instead of trying to
sort out the tangles of installing odds and sods later.

Hi

Does anyone know of a way to access a Win2000 drive without root

access, and nothing I do seems to make a difference.

Is this just not possible, or am I a hopeless newbie......

So you put LILO over the windows MBR with no problems? I have one huge 75GB
drive with a lot of partitions. I didn't want to risk having to reinstall
everything if the partition tables get screwed up & fdisk /mbr won't fix it.
If I can work up the nerve I may try it.

You might like to take a look at the NET-HOWTO and the Mini-Networking HOWTO
guides which are located at: http://www.linuxdoc.org. In brief however,
providing that your network card is actually identified by linux and that the
following command returns a line:

cat /var/log/dmesg | grep eth

you can take a look at the /etc/sysconfig/network,
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and /etc/resolv.conf file. This is
where you define all of the network settings.

This should be a good starting point.

See ya

Hello, I agree as from what I have seen so far the only reason to have
swap even equal ram (when there is plenty of ram installed eg
128mb) is for debugging certain core dumps that go into swap by
default. Empty swap partitions otherwise just add to head travel and
wasted space. I am referring to normal user intallations of course.
For which who debugs core dumps anyway? I have not plumbed the server
depths yet in this respect however but suspect there is also much
unneeded swap snake oil.

The best thing I have found for this is to go to
www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/ and search for the dependencies that you
require, then load them and pray that they in turn don't need any
dependencies. It can become a vicious circle!!

It "should" work. You'd need to add/edit a section in lilo.conf for the
Windows boot partition, but before I did that I'd see about getting hold of
a copy of Ghost or one of the other disk replication utilities and
"ghosting" your entire disk to another disk, then if LILO makes it puke, you
can ghost it back. Like I say, it "should" work, but if your data is
mission-critical then don't "experiment" with it. Also, FDISK /MBR "should"
be able to restore things if LILO hoses it, but again YMMV.

Hi!

I'm unable to establish a DHCP (or other) network connection
from a Xircom IIps ethernet
PCMCIA card. OS is RedHat 5.2 with kernel-pcmcia-cs in its
kernel.

A script is attached (from /var/log/messages).
The problem may be the PCMCIA card not
being probed successfully.
I've pretty much followed the tests prescribed in the PCMCIA
HOWTO and DHCP HOWTO.
But './network start eth0' fails.
Would appreciate any suggestions as to how to approach this.

Thanks, much appreciated.
