like the windows defrag tool not defragmenting your hdd properly.. i
spent days trying to figure out why i wasn't able to repartition my
drive until i installed an eval of norton utilities and used their
defrag tool speed disk.. turned out that the standard tool "forgot" a
few things at the end of the drive so i ended up with a handful of
kbytes for my future debian system.. :-/ so get a good defrag tool or
you'll end with lost data or no linux..
just an advice,
frank.

You will need to run 'e2fsck -b 8193 /dev/hda1', but you will need to run it
from a rescue disk. Some of the installation cdroms like redhat will run in
rescue when you type 'linux rescue' at the boot prompt. Then you can run
the command. You should never run e2fsck on a mounted partition. This one
is not mounted, but you can't run the command without a linux system and you
can't boot. Hopefully Win ME did not bite into your little boot partition.
Running that command should restore the superblock on that partition. I
don't know if it will also wreck the Win install. You could put the boot
stuff on the main partition in /boot directory if you need to in order to
install Win. You will need to be sure you have lilo 21.4 or higher and
lba32 in lilo.conf, if that is the case.

I guess I'm getting too damn old to be messing with this stuff Marc.
Don't document what I'm doing or have done well enough and my memory
ain't all that damn good. Changed kernels and done so many
configurations lately I can't remember exactly which one it was that I
had the difficulty with. Think it was 2.4.1 though. I compiled it with
the advanced epp stuff since my bios supports it and I've always in the
past had no problems with it. I use a Mustek pp scanner with my printer
connected on the pass through for it on 3BC/IRQ7, lpt0. Any way, as I
said, I think it was on that setup, that I had the difficulty with it.
System didn't recognize the printer, and every time I tried to use my
scanner it initialized the printer and threw it off line, but neither
the printer nor scanner worked. I didn't mess around with it or try to
figure it out, but last week, I did a reinstall of RH 6.1, did all the
necessary upgrades, and compiled and installed a 2.4.2 kernel with
basically the same config as I'd used on the 2.4.1, did the aliasing in
the modules.conf etc. same as I always have to do and the printer and
scanner both started working again. No change to bios back to ecp or
anything of that nature. I also had one other glitch in 2.4.1 with mod
deps on md.o if I'm not mistaken.
Maybe just try a patch up to 2.4.2 and see what happens or fiddle with
your pp settings in your bios. I haven't found anything in 2.4.2 to
complain about. YET ;-) But give me another day or two.

There is no such thing as a "default configuration". If you mean what
happens when you compile without making any choices at all,
that isn't in any sense a default. I'd be surprised if it
even worked.

Hello again.
I finally got the bugs worked out of my sound drivers and networking(network
shut down every 5 seconds). Everything seems to be functioning properly now
except for an odd problem I noticed today.I left the computer on overnight
in Linux (Mandrake7.2) and was happy to see that it didn't have any
stability problems. However,I tried to log out of Linux (KDE)and it won't
allow me to log out.The screen dims and the logout box shows up but when i
press logout,my screen just brightens back up and the desktop reappears as
if I had hit the cancel button.I have had 100% consistentcy on reinstalling
Linux after hitting reset button on tower-will reload and lock up during
desktop appearance. My question is this- if I cannot logout ,as is my current
case,is there a way to force logout other than hitting reset?
Thanks everyone. CD

I am trying to replace the compiler packaged with redhat

But, the compile dies with what appears to be incorrect

Does anyone have suggestions? Or, are there RPMs
anywhere? (I've looked on gcc.gnu.org, but I didn't
see anything)
Any help is appreciated!

You might want to make a boot floppy, experiment to your heart's delight,
and save yourself some time while you figure out what's wrong. I have to
say that with my very vanilla box here, and the one at work, 2.4.2. has
compiled like a dream a number of times, but you do have to watch all
of your choices in .configure.

Yesterday my cvs repository did work fine for updates & commit.
I proabbly did change something on it but now I got the follwoing error
message:
<snip>
[tsmets@Calvin lang]$ cvs add WeakRefUsage.java
cvs [add aborted]: cannot open CVS/Repository: Permission denied
</snip>
My repository content is located on the /opt/VCS/CVSROOT, hence the
environment variable is : CVSROOT=/opt/VCS/CVSROOT. Since it didn't work
the only thing I did was :
<snip>
chmod -Rv +s-t *
</snip>
as that was need in the office when I took a copy of the cvsroot rep. to
the cvstest rep.
My questions are two folds :
1. what exactly means the `s' & `t' flags on files
Apparently t is the sticky bit. I know the definition but don't feel
confortable with its usage.
2. `s' bit seems to be the group-ID bit
What's that ?

The problem occurs both when I'm running KDE 2.1 and Gnome, and occurs
for any application (xmms, plaympeg) which uses sound.
I'm at a loss of where to look. Any suggestions?
Victor
PS. I did check with the sound controller (the little speaker icond
on the taskbar in Gnome) and mute is NOT on.

Craig,
Thanks for the help. It does not work in console mode either. Strange that it
does work fine during installation, but after installation, it is gone. I have
a modem, I wonder if there is contention on port ttyS0?
