find / -type f \( -name "filename" \) -exec grep "text to find" {} \;
If you only want it to search a users home directory you can replace the
/ after find with ~/ or the directory you want to search like "/bin"
and the "filename" with the file you are looking for.
If it is run as a user any file the user doesn't have permissions to it
will list files as Permission denied.

It's not necessary
cd /tmp
apt-get source binutils (put some deb-src lines in your apt/sources.list)
cd binutils-blah
make -f debian/rules
sudo make -f debian/rules binary
cd ..
sudo dpkg -i binutils_blah.deb

I d/l bind9 to /usr/local/downloads and ran a tar -zxvf bind-9.0.1.tar.gz
then I followed the simple instructions to install Bind the
usually./configure, make, and then make install.
Everything seems to install properly, but the binaries I think are still
from 8.2.3.
The script in /etc/rc.d/init.d/named still shows a "status" of 8.2.3. Could
some please help me finish this install? Also where is the replacement
script for the new 9 named?

bad news.
Let's hope Win didn't touch hda1
I do need that fdisk listing to tell more.

At

Okay, than at least the root fs isn't fully wrecked.
Make an fdisk listing from here, and try to run e2fsck on /dev/hda1, with
the
following alternative superblock: 32768
Now let's hope it exists and is intact.
If it doesn't exist, you probably need to reformat that partition, and
restore
(from backup?) whatever was there.
basically it contains:
ls -l /boot
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 Oct 4 18:39 System.map ->
System.map-
2.2.15
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 186704 Apr 20 1999 System.map-2.2.5-15

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 617288 Apr 20 1999 vmlinuz-2.2.5-15
map/chain.b/boot/b/boot.0300 are from lilo (reinstall it if needed)
System.map is probably in your /usr/src/linux/ (Not really needed)
vmlinuz is probably in /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/ (and is called bzImage
there)
whether you need an initrd depends on your setup.

gcc-2.95.2 does not compile with glibc-2.2.2 !
You have to patch gcc. Check: http://www.gnu.org/software/gcc/bugs.html

Subject: HD Partition, The Sequel
Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 08:05:36 GMT
Hi
A couple-o-days ago i wondered how I could partition my existing linux
partition (the only one on the hard disk) without erasing any data so that I
could put in windows.
So some one suggested I use gnu's "parted" program. So I downloaded it and
tried to compile it. So each time i ./configure and make it it crashes with
the following error:
program as failed.
I assume its sayin that the assembler is buggy. Any Ideas?
Now as to why I want to install an inferior product like windows in the
first place, well here it is:
My Linux PC has 32 mb of ram with the kernel 2.4 in it.
I have 2 network cards. One of the cards is used for my home LAN and the
other one is connected to my cable ISP. As u would have guessed I am using
this linux box as a gateway to other PCs in my LAN. So any hooo I got all
the dhcp and all working and the NIC connected to the cable (eth1) gives me
speeds of 5 k a second. I have put the exact same card (literally) onto a
slower windows 98 machine with 16 mb of ram and i get speeds of upto 250 k a
second fo rthe same file. So I wanted to see if windows on the linux
machine could help me out here.
When i did an ifconfig, there were an incredibly high number of frame errors
in reception of packets:

So can some body help me out here.. I am stuck with this for a month without
a solution.

Do you think the video card is not supported, or is it just a configuration

well, if you never installed linux on this computer, trying "new
install" sounds like a good idea. if it doesn't work, just try some
"official" widespread distribution (i.e. not repackaged by anyone).

Subject: partition question
This is my first time using and installing Linux. I have a few questions.
I know they may have been asked before but I wanted to run my particular
situation by someone. I currently have 3 partitions on my machine. All 3 are
about 11GB each. One is a FAT32 primary partition. Then there is an extended
drive enclosing two logical FAT32 partitions. My first question is: What is a
good amount of space to install Redhat Linux 7.0? I used PartitionMagic to
create a Linux Ext2 partition and a Linux Swap Space. Then someone told me to
delete those and let the Linux automatic partition create the partition for me.
What is the best way to go?
Also, someone suggested to me that perhaps I should delete one of the
partitions and devote 11GB to Linux. Is that too much? Perhaps it would be
better if I cut the 3rd partition from 11GB to say 6GB, giving Linux about 5GB?
I'm using it for school and currently have Windows 98 in my machine. I'm not
planning on saving much on the Linux, we only might be writing some Unix shell
programs in C. But I noticed it takes some more space for things like games and
GNOME. I know i'm asking alot but if anyone can help with some suggestions I
would really appreciate it. Thanks
Tom

thanks for looking into my problem. i'll include the output from fext2.
can you point me to some, maybe not all too long blurb, how to

(i just notice i overshot by running fext2 on the whole disk rather than
the
cylinders you recommended. lost the printout of your mail ... hope that
doesn't do any harm ... ).

Subject: network configuration
I was installing Redhat Linux 7.0 and got stumped when I came upon the
network configuration. I am installing the workstation setup and it obviously
detected a network card. Do I have to worry about this information if I am
installing on my home computer? Info like the IP address, netmask, network,
broadcast, Gateway, primary DNS and so on? Or do I just skip this? I know that
my IP address practically switches everytime I sign on. For businesses i'm
assuming they are set things. Any help with this is appreciated. Thanks

Subject: Netgear FA 311 NIC

Please help!
Having successfully compiled a module for the card on Mandrake 7.2, and
added 'alias eth0 fa311' to /etc/modules.conf, everything seemed to be fine.
'eth0' starts at boot, but the card just does not function. 'ifconfig'
reveals the eth0, and it can ping itself but nothing else on the network. No
other machines can ping it.
Harddrake has no entries under Network Device Cards, but there is an entry
under Other Devices for the card which is listed as National Semiconductor
Corporation Unknown (the FA311's chip manufacturer).
The IP address etc. where set up on a previous card and can not now be
altered using Network Configurator. It simply vanishes when you click the
button.
Any advice will be gratefully received.
Thanks,
Steven Horsley

If your home computer is going to be hooked into a network (your home
network), you'd better read something about networking, the NET3-HOWTO
is Ok.
If your home computer is going to be hooked into your ISP
network (trough a modem), you will have to setup PPP for this,
see the PPP-HOWTO for more info.
If you have a network card, but you do not plan to use it, then simply
ignore the information.
BTW, imho is better to have some information about networking.

Good idea to replace it :)
However gcc 2.95.2 does not compile out-of-the-box with glibc 2.2, which
RedHat 7 comes with.
So instead you could download a patched one - for example mine:
www.amagerkollegiet.dk/~moffe/
This one will compile and install fine on RedHat 7 (at least it did on
my box and a couple of others).
Good luck

Did you allow writes in /etc/exports? Do you have both hosts in _both_
/etc/hosts? Do you have 'order hosts' in /etc/resolv.conf? Do you use
the same NFS version (i.e. the same kernel version)?

You can download the iptables package from the wolverine (redhat 7.0.90
= 7.1 beta) - it has iptables-restore and iptables-save programs, which
iptables from RedHat 7.0 does not have.
Next go to the iptables-HOWTO:
http://netfilter.kernelnotes.org/
Specificaly what you want is (from the NAT-HOWTO) somethig like:
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp --dport 80 \
-j REDIRECT --to-port 3128
