IE doesn't work properly with www.microsoft.com! Visit it
with IE, and much of the time it only renders the banner!
If you refresh it gives you a bit more. Netscape often,
but by no means always, works with www.microsoft.com. So
if I visit that URL I keep both the browsers open and
copy and paste URLs just in case one browser handles the
page better than the other. That site is a pain.

I tried this... no luck. the problem with your suggestion is that it assumes
that i know what i'm doing. I, quite frankly, don't =)

I have just received a Dane-Elec USB Smartmedia Reader and I'm real
close to getting it to work, but I can't seem to mount the drive..

# mount -t auto /dev/sda1 /mnt/smart/
mount: /dev/sda1 has wrong major or minor number

I've tried sd[a..d][0..6] or so.. All the same error. And in the
kernel log:

block-major-8

>From reading other messages, I suspect this means that I have something
wrong with the SCSI setup, but I am not sure what else to do.

I'm pasting relevant SCSI and USB messages from the kernel logs, and
below that the kernel .config files relevant to SCSI and USB. Oh, I
have a KA 6100, on-board USB, two-port card that attaches to the mobo,
as well as a real Adapetec SCSI controller with one SCSI CD-ROM attached
to it. If I can provide any more information please let me know. All
"is not set" lines are removed, except for the one UHCI line to show
which USB driver I used. My motherboard has a VIA chipset.

Just choose open file and enter the ".file-name"

why did you copy this these directories instead of using the ones installed
by whichever distribution you have used? These directories contain scripts
which will only normally work with the the same distribution and often the
same version of that distribution.

you can't easily install a linux system on another box by just copying
everything across.

its a gtk thing. type a dot in the filename box and then hit <tab> and
they should magically appear.

It could just be a non-obvious mixer setting. I couldn't hear a note out
of my CD drive until I raised the *video* volume, for example. Don't ask
me why. Mind you, this was with a built-in sound chip.

did mine in latex, so there. it was better than "not that bad" in
that it allowed me to forget about all but a few formatting issues.
(there was a widow or an orphan somewhere that i had to fix before the
ex-marine-football-jock-dissertation-fuhrer would accept my thesis.)

anyway, did you try printing your thesis with a different machine

away from word.

i dunno... everyone says this, but i still find lyx _more_ difficult
than plain old latex. i don't think latex is that difficult,
especially if you've done some web pages or programming.

Hi,

I've had an NVIDIA M64 gfx card, which I upgraded from NVIDIA's site
with the latest drivers.
I also d/l new OpenGL drivers for it; I tried both the smp and the
enterprise linux version, but they both fail to start up properly.. my
kernel is 2.4.2 configured with no SMP - I guess this would mean that I
use the enterprise-RH7.0 version.. now I can't uninstall the new nvidia
drivers or use the new ones...

Can someone tell me which packages I need to install to have GLUT GLIDE,
MESA, OpenGL, work properly on my system with NVIDIA M64?

System: RH7.0 w linux-2.4.2(no smp), AMD Athlon K7, Nvidia M64

Cheers

Curiously, I DO do this.

   oboe:/usr/oboe/ptb% alias tin
   rtin -f /usr/oboe/ptb/.newsrc-$NNTPSERVER -G 200 -n

I suppose it's the -n.

-n Only load groups from the active file that are
subscribed to in the user's $HOME/.newsrc.
This allows a noticeable speedup when connect-
ing via a slow line, but tin cannot tell which
                   groups are moderated.

Yes, "there is". Go to donald beckers website and pick it up.

It's called

    3c5x9setup

NO. What would be your advantage in doing so? Has your hardware
suddenly become unsupported by 2.2.14 (which probably is worth updating
to 2.2.17 to close some security holes - I don't like 2.2.18)?

What does the "possibly" mean here? But you don't need the latest! You
need the versions specified in the kernel sources Changes files.

A good start. Now continue on your way ...

Plenty. But it is not an upgrade, it is a change. They have differnt
major numbers, so they are not compatible. You will need some different
utility programs .. pppd being the most notable.

They had to update their tools before compiling, and update
some utilities afterwards. The requirements are noted in the changes
file. But you can limit yourself to doing binutils and modutils
before, and pppd afterwards.

Mmm .. you seem to be switching the topic here. You're saying that the
answer is irrelevant and what is needed is the handholding.

This is not what I said. But the sequence above _is_ the only logical way to
tackle the problem. Anything else is just close eyes and hope. And nor
is it a difficult sequence. Think of it (without the patronizing
overtones, which are not intended) as:

0) find shop that sells potatoes (how?)
1) get potatoes (car or carry)
2) drop potatoes in pot (open the packet, peel if necessary)
3) cook potatoes (turn on heat, set for 15 mins)
4) serve potatoes (..)

Oh, it does.

That's fine. Though apparantly a DOB, not a SOB.
