I have a problem with my bootloader. I am currently using GRUB and I was
reinstalling Linux (due to a problem with x86)and my power went out in the
middle of it.

To make a long story short - GRUB now opens in a BASH-LIKE environment
(which I don't know how to use) and the help sucks.

So I wanted to re-install the whole HD but, my CD is not booting on
startup.

(my BIOS is configured right) - I have it that CD-ROM is the first boot
dev.

Is it possible that GRUB overrides this????

Thank You to anyone that reads this and that helps other people answer
problems. Much respect!

Yup. Both internal and external caches must be disabled for it to boot.
Changing the RAM speed (to <70ns from <60ns) has no effect. I tried a
whole bunch of other BIOS things too, including the factory settings, none
of which work.

The thing about a defective cache is it works fine on Win98 and Mandrake
with the cache enabled.

Is there any way I can get some additional diagnostic output at that
early stage of booting?

By Jove, you've done it! I used a brand-new disk, made sure it had no bad
sectors, and made it a Linux boot disk.

Bada-bing! It worked!

Now for my next problem...

I downloaded Red Hat 7 as an ISO image and burned it onto CDs. Each CD has
just one big file on it. How do I "open" them so I can install the
software? Thanks.

Thanks! That's exactly what I was looking fore. I've created /dev entries
in FreeBSD but never in Linux so I didn't know what the appropriate command

print is a ksh builtin, so if it's a ksh script there ought to be
a #! /path/to/ksh at the top of it.

I have RHat 6.2, just a simple install from the disk. Everytime I try to
install a program doing the typical:
$./configure
$make
$make install

The configure command seems to work fine, but my make and make install
commands ALWAYS fail. I can install just about any program from a binary
release, but there's so much software out there that I'd like to use that
only comes in source form. I have tried setiathome, xmms, paradise, xmms

That's what I feared. The options are all there - and the tool is, AFAIK,
the most recent version. I'll check again on Monday... thanks anyway :)

I might have some luck (after I've triple-checked all other possible
factors) lobbying AMI for a fix... the tool itself does not appear to be,
alas, open-source.

I am attemting my first Linux install and have run into problems. I
have experience with Solaris and sparc, so don't get thrown by hand
editing files, etc.

I have a Nokia 477B monitor and an Ark Logic 2000PV video card. I am
using Red Hat 7.0. I have tried using both Xconfigurator and
xf86config. The latter generates config file errors, so I am suspect of
the tool. I only tried it after things fail using Xconfigurator. When
using either, the Ark Logic 2000PV is known and the correct X server
(XF86_SVGA) is picked, but both indicate that no driver is found, but
let me go my merry way continuing the config.

I have tried a few different numbers for the amount of video memory I
have - a web site indicated 2MB was correct, but I also tried smaller
amounts. I tell Xconfigurator No Clockchip. Xconfigurator gives me a
reasonable set of choices for video modes. I have tried starting with
the higher resolutions, then went down to 8 bit, 640x480 only. This
works and several choices of 8 bit higher res, but any 16 or 24 bit
choices give "There is a problem with your X configuration" in
Xconfigurator. If I try "startx", I get
(**) SVGA16bpp not supported for this chipset
*** A configured device found, but display modes could not be resolved

I have used this monitor/video card with Windoz 95 for serveral years at
16 bit. Any hints?

Thanks

Date: 31 Mar 2001 20:31:26 GMT

I tried to install Red Hat 7.0 to my system, but it doesn't recognize the
hard drive connected to High Point HPT370 UDMA100 / RAID -controller. What
is the correct procedure how I could install RH directly to the place
where it's going to be? (yeah. I'm new to linux. Tried it some times ago
with more standard computer without a problem, though.)

Current hookup:

onboard first ide:
MASTER: some old HD, will not fit installation (one partition)
SLAVE: CD-ROM drice

onboard second ide:
MASTER: CD-RW drive
SLAVE: <none>

HPT 370 ide controller, first channel (would be hde, hdf) :
MASTER: IBM DTLA 307030 ATA-100 drive, three FAT32 partitions + free space
SLAVE: empty

rest of HPT channels are empty also. As you can see, there's no RAID setup
on my HPT, I'm using it only as UDMA-100 controller.

While installing, Disk Druid sees only hda (the oldie hd).

I've read about kernel patches and stuff but I don't know how to apply
them. Does 2.4 kernels have built-in support for HPT controllers? Should I
wait until Red Hat officially supports (or whatever) 2.4 kernels?

"make xconfig" -- ok
"make dep" -- ok

make trundles along for a short while, then dies at

I do the insmod with the product ID etc and have a link to the
/dev/usbscanner:

lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           10 Mar 30 13:11 scanner ->
usbscanner

I have edited the epson.conf and have the only line in it as:

usb /dev/scanner

When I run it reports "no devices available".

There is something fundamental I am missing...I am using SuSE 7.1. I
have:
rpm -q xsane
xsane-0.70-0

and:

rpm -q sane
sane-1.0.4-3

I have not changed/downloaded anything further off of the web.

Any help?

Thanks

Leo
