Thanks James. I got what you mean.

I read about linux advanced routing based on userid. If that is
possible, I can create a local userid, one for each ppp connection.
However, I couldn't file the details on "> ip route add ???? userid dev
ppp#". Any idea?

Thanks for your time again.

Yello

What has happende?

The only place I can find traces of RH7.0 is in the rawhide/i386/
folder. And if I use the bootnet.img and driver.img from that folder the
install just keep on crashing!. I know there is probaly a mirror out
there somewhere, but I'm behind a firewall, so I can only ftp to
ftp.sunsite.auc.dk.

I hope someone can tell what has happende. It's the only thing I what to
know

Thanks.

I currently have a ATI video card in my machine and am wanting to
install a different video card. How do you tell the OS that a new card
is installed before it tries to initialize it with the wrong drivers?
Can someone give me information or point me to a source explaining how
this is done? I am running Mandrake 7.2 with the ManFreq Update.
Thank you for any assistance.

change to init 3 so you go into shell, then re-set up x with the new card

also have kudzu running when you reboot as it should pick up the new bit of

Reply-To: "Carl Bevil" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hello all. I'm looking into buying a new PC (Pentium 4), and want to get
Linux installed on it. I also want to have Windows, so I'd like a dual-boot
system. I've done a little research on the web, but was hoping I could get
some direct answers from this newsgroup. Here are my questions:

1) I'd much rather have Windows 2000 than Windows 9x. Are there any issues
with Linux on Win2000? What about NTFS?

2) Is there any problem installing Linux on large hard drives (say 40GB
plus)?

3) It's my understanding that if I want to have a dual-boot with Windows,
the best thing to do is install Windows first, then install Linux. Should I
use Windows to partition my drive before installing Linux, or is it better
to let Linux to do this during its install?

4) Is it possible to get Linux working with a DSL modem? Currently I am
using Earthlink's DSL service, which uses a dynamic IP address. Anyone have
any tips for this (or maybe an URL or two)?

... and the bonus question is:

5) Probably the main reason I want to install Linux is for learning. I
learned some Unix in college on a Sparc station (I think it was BSD Unix)
and want to get back into it. Of all the flavors of Linux out there, it
seemed like Slackware Linux would be the best for my purposes. Red Hat,
Mandrake, etc. seemed like they automated a lot of stuff, and I wouldn't as
motivated to learn from those OS's. What are people's opinions on this?

Thanks in advance!

well i can run 'make' as a regular user and i assume it's b/c its in my

This is easy enough to do. Open /etc/inittab in your favorite text editor
and find the line id:3:initdefault:. Change the 3 to 5 for a graphical
login. This assumes X windows is already up and running. To test wether
the graphical login will woirk, type (as root) 'init 5'

Lets do it by order of importance.
5) Go Slackware, you won't regret it.
3)&2) When you have the Slackware root and boot diskettes prepared invoke Linux
fdisk and create a Linux primary partition starting AND ending on cylinder 1 of
your hard drive. It will be later /boot partition. It bypasses the large drive
hickups that many newbies encounter.
Now you can install Windows letting it to take part of the drive.
Back to Linux install. Create with Linux fdisk the extended partition and create
there logical partitions for swap and root.
Slackware install will smell the Windows presence and install LILO with dual
boot possibility.

VERY, VERY IMPORTANT: During install of each OS let it create booting diskette.

4) This is not a question when going Linux, this OS was born with networking
spoon in its mouth.

1) I don't know MS-Glassware9x does what I need so I live in retarded situation.

But I dual-boot freely.
