Subject: Novice admin trying to secure a server

Hi, all. Our church has its own RH 6.2 Linux box which serves as a mail
server, web server, and internet gateway for a handful of Windows 95
machines.

This being a church and all, we don't have a paid sysadmin, so that job has
fallen to me. I have several years of general Unix and Linux experience
(from a user standpoint), but not a whole lot of practice being an admin.

Some of it I'll pick up as we go along, but at the outset, I want to at
LEAST make sure I have a secure box that can withstand whatever attacks may
come, while I try to get up to speed on all the rest.

So I guess the questions are:

1) What are the absolute *critical* things that an admin (particually an
admin of a RH Linux 6.2) box should know about? For instance, what kind of
things should I be monitoring on a day-to-day basis? What's the usual
process for keeping up with newly discovered software flaws or backdoors,
and keeping a system up-to-date?

2) What's the easiest way for someone with a limited amount of time to get
up to speed on sysadmin'ing? Again, I know that it's a big job, so for now
I'm wanting to get the most critical tools in my toolchest first, and worry
about optimizing, running backups, etc. after that. Are there any good
books/websites that can take me from "newbie admin" to at least "moderately
skilled admin" ?

3) Is it possible to go straight from one version of RH (6.2) to another
(7.0) without simply erasing the hard drive and reinstalling a fresh copy of
7.0 ?

Thanks to all who can help me get started.

I got RH7.0 installed and access it from my NT box using Exceed.
When I do "ls -l", directories, flat files, scripts, etc, are shown in their
own
color. When I had this problem in RH6.1, I edited the .Xdefaults and got
the color scheme removed.

In RH7.0, the setting must be saved in elsewhere as altering .Xdefaults
would make any difference. Please help!

Jeffrey

I've swapped cards in 7.2 and Linux finds them on boot. I didn't have to do
anything except feed it the CD.

Some Windows machines can resolve names using NetBios for purposes other
than file sharing e.g. ping. Windows NT is probably registering itself
to WINS servers and Linux isn't.

The best solution is to get the machine registered in the local DNS.
However, if this isn't possible/practical, it should be possible to set
up Samba and have nmbd register the machine to WINS.

Why is the RH 7.0 removed? If I try to use the /rawhide/i386/ files, the
installation crashes when it is trying to configure X, it also happens
if I press "cancel" to manual configure it later.

I have had RH 7.0 installed before, just on a trail basis, so I wanted
to make a clean install, but I can't install it.

I don't want to go back to windows........ please help me.

Sorry to say - your CD burning needs to be re-done. The ISO image is an
image of the whole CD, including the file system control data. If you burned
it as a normal file, you have now two file systems inside each other.

You should have the ISO image back on the hard disk of the burner machine
and make a new CD with 'Make CD from image' option in the burner program.

I would suspect that an alias in one of the bash startup-files were to
blame. Try the command "alias" and see if it does not give you something
like "alias ls='/bin/ls --color=auto'" in one of the returned lines. If this
is the case, find the proper initialisation file and remove or correct the
alias (it's is probably in either "~/.bashrc", "/etc/bashrc", or
"/etc/profile" -- but could reside somewhere else too).

I just received a new computer system with RH7 and VMWare Express
pre-installed. As a Linux newbie I'm trying to figure out how to set
aside more of the HD for the WIN apps that I still unfortunately need.
The manual and the config manager only seem to let me set up two virtual
HDs of at most 2 GB each. I'd like to be able to set aside something
more like 20-25 GB.

Is this possible or do I have to set up a number of separate 2 drive
virtual machines with 2GB/drive, each with a copy of WIn installed?

Thanks for any help that you can provide.

I don't see a 3CP3617 on 3Com's Web site, but I do see a 3CP3617B.
That's an internal PCI modem. As I wrote in my previous post, I know of
Linux drivers for only one internal PCI DSL modem, and that's not it.
There's no mention on 3Com's Web site (that I found) of Linux drivers
for the modem. In other words, it makes a pretty conversation piece.
Return it to your ISP and get an external Ethernet-based modem in
return, unless of course you know of drivers for the device. If there
are no drivers and your ISP won't take a return, you have three
choices:

1) Don't use DSL from Linux.
2) Buy your own *EXTERNAL ETHERNET-INTERFACED* DSL modem. (You can
probably sell the 3CP3617B paper weight on eBay or the like, so
it'll probably cost you $50-$150, depending on what you get.)
3) Stick the internal modem and an Ethernet card into a cheap Windows
box (even a 486 will do) and use it as a router.

Suggestion: Do it on a ReiserFS partition while you're at it. I did,
worked fine. I did however return to Debian after a while.

Have fun!

Subject: aha1542 - getting module to work
Date: Sun, 01 Apr 2001 15:35:29 GMT

A little while ago, I upgraded to a new box, and in the process upgraded from
RedHat 5.2 to 6.1. Couldn't get my SCSI Jaz drive working at the time, and am
now coming back around to it.

It worked fine on my old system, and works fine when I boot to Windoze on my new
system. However, when I try and load the aha1542 module, I get:

---
aha1542.c: Unable to abort command for target 0
aha1542.c: Trying device reset for target 0
aha1542.c: Unable to abort command for target 0
Sent BUS RESET to scsi host 0
aha1542.c: Unable to abort command for target 0
aha1542.c: Unable to abort command for target 0
aha1542.c: Trying device reset for target 0
aha1542.c: Unable to abort command for target 0
Sent BUS RESET to scsi host 0
---

Also get this when I recompile the kernel. My base system has a kernel
v2.2.12-20. I thought maybe it was fixed in a patch, so I downloaded 2.2.19,
compiled, and got the same problem. Also tried downloading 2.4.3, recompiling,
and still have the same problem. So at this point, it feels like a
configuration issue.

I've also tried changing the SCSI ID, DMA channel, IRQ, and every other h/w
option I could think of - the same problem keeps occuring.

I've searched Deja, and only found posts requesting help on this problem, but
no answers - I'm hoping somebody out there has seen this and knows of a
solution.

Many thanx in advance

Cheers

I am trying to learn the same things. I've been reading several
general books on Linux and the Security-HOWTO. These are helpful, but
I still find I need to do a lot of digging elsewhere to find out
exactly how to implement their suggestions. Recently, I found (at
http://www.linuxdoc.org/guides.html) the following guide which seems
more tailored to my (and your) specific situation.

Subject: Kernel Panic: In swapper task - not syncing (RH7 & SuSE 7.1)
Date: Sun, 01 Apr 2001 11:50:17 -0400

Hi All -

I have installed SuSE 7.1 (pro) on a Tyan TomCat s1563 MBd (P-II
200Mhz ISA/PCI, w/128MB Ram).

The problem is that the Kernel thinks there should be two (or more)
processors and there is only one. I get a kernel panic error and the
system locks. This happens on both the RedHat 7 and the SuSE 7.1 pro
distributions.

The install process did not give me any errors. This MBd is (was)
able to support an optional second processor - which is not installed
(and there are some other controller devices not installed as well).
The main board jumpers are set to reflect the one processor
configuration. BIOS is configured normally.

FWIW - I am attempting to replace RedHat v5.2 with this install which
did not have any problems with the hardware. Also, you can get the
RH7 version to boot using "boot-up" but it's not stable (insert long
story about RH tech support here :-(.

This is all I know -

There is a routine - setup_APIC_timer - called during boot.
The output of that routine looks like this:

..... 1982902 CPU clocks in one timer chip tick /*true*/
..... 0 APIC clocks in one timer chip tick /* no clue about this */
..... CPU clock speed is 198.2902 MHz /* also true */
..... system bus clock speed is 0.0000 MHz /* this seems odd*/

Next, then the boot process kick-outs the following lines

CPU map: 8003
CPU #1 not responding. Removing from cpu_online_map
CPU #15 not responding. Removing from cpu_online_map
Before bogomips
Error: Only one processor found
Boot done.
enabling symmetric IO mode... ...done.
ENABLING APIC IRQs
...changing IO-APIC physical APIC ID to 2
Kernel Panic: could not set ID
In swapper task - not syncing

And that's all there is. From here you have two options, power off or
the reset button. Neither of which helps (although the power off is a
little less frustrating :-). I have installed both Kernels (2.1 &
2.4) - both provide the same result described above. I have also
tried a reinstall passing a maxcpus=1 parameter to lilo I think. I
configured it during setup and don't see it on the command line during
boot.

What's next??

Thanks for your help.
