Hi
If its any use, I had problems on RedHat 7.0 during the graphical
installation. The screen image was corrupt when things moved.
I did however get it installed using the text based installation and then I
found that I needed to add the noaccel and sw_cursor options to
/etc/X11/XF86Config as below, after running Xconfigurator:-
Section "Device"
Identifier "S3 Inc.|86c794 [Savage 3D]"
VendorName "Unknown"
BoardName "Unknown"
VideoRam 8192
Option "noaccel"
Option "sw_cursor"
# Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection
If you give some more info about what went wrong then I would expect
someone will be able to help. In particular mention the model of you're
graphics card and monitor.
Hope this helps
James

Hummm, locate spec-helper
/usr/doc/spec-helper-0.2/Howto-spec-helper
Top of Howto-spec-helper
=============================================================
Starting from rpm-3.0.4-0.2mdk, the spec-helper package must be
installed as a dependency of the rpm-build package.
The spec-helper script is called automatically at the end of the
%install section to compress info and man pages, strip files and
remove backup files from the $RPM_BUILD_ROOT dir. The %install section
can be cleaned off this tasks but the %files section about man and
info pages must be specified without the .bz2 extension but with an *
instead. The goal is to have vendor neutral spec files.

The warranty and liability expired as you read this message.
If the above breaks your system, it's yours and you keep both pieces.
Practice safe computing. Backup the file before you change it.
Do a, man command_here or cat command_here, before using it.

If you frequently use Usenet newsgroups, stay away from Earthlink.
Their servers are frequently down.

Date: Sun, 01 Apr 2001 23:31:41 GMT
I've been having all sorts of problems getting my linux box to work
with a Sound Blaster Live! Value card. I finally went and got the
2.2.19 kernel and compiled that and included support for the SB
emu10k1 in it. When I boot up, I don't seem to get any error messages
related to that, and if I look at the interupts used by the system, I
see that the emu10k1 is using 5, as it should, along with the pci usb.
If cat /dev/sound it says it is compiled into kernel. (All of the
options below that are blank, but I think that is ok.)
But, if I try to play a cd, or whatever, no sound comes out from the
speaker. (If I attach headphones to the cdrom, all is ok.)
Does anyone know what the problem might be, or what to do next?
TIA,
Ed

Another thing to try is saving all the console output generated when
you run startx. Try it like this:
startx > startx.out 2>&1 &
The "2>&1" joins error output with standard output in the same file,
startx.out. The final "&" runs the command as a background job,
thus freeing your console for further work. Run this command, and
when (if?) X freezes, press CTRL-ALT-F1 to go back to your console,
and start reading the startx.out file. Perhaps you may find a clue.

Subject: VIA82C686B sound
I have an Epox EP-8KTA3 motherboard with the VT82C686B bridge on it.
The board also has a SoundBlaster and MPU-401 built in for legacy
applications.
If I compile the kernel (2.2.18) with CONFIG_SOUND_VIA82CXXX,
everything works -- I can cat an .au file to /dev/audio, wavplay
works, I can play audio CDs, etc.. But, whenever I try to run
Sysnaesthesia (http://yoyo.cc.monash.edu.au/~pfh/synaesthesia.html) it
can't find the dsp:
[kevin@localhost kevin]$ synaesthesia cd
synaesthesia: Error opening dsp device
(reason for error: No such device)
The strace output is not helpful. I have tried many permutations of
options in both the CMOS settings, kernel .config, and I even tried
installing the ALSA drivers and tried many different options. The
closest I got was the same success as with the 2.2.18 kernel, the
worst I got was no sound working at all. I have tried:
- legacy SoundBlaster on/off
- MPU-401 on/off
- ALSA or no ALSA
- modules or monolithic
Normally I would search DejaNews for the answer to my problems, but
since Google has acquired Deja, the search doesn't seem to come up
with anything useful, so I thought I'd post a message.
Does anyone have the sound working on this board, and are you able to
use synaesthesia?
Thanks,
Kevin

Luke,
I am also using a RH6.2 system, and have recently upgraded my rpm rpms
to version 4.0.2. I have been trying to stay reasonably up-to-date with
redhat's security advisories etc which you can see posted at
www.redhat.com/support/errata/index.html
I have always found the instructions given there to be clear enough
that the installation was very easy (except for new kernels, but thats
another story). You may not be able to DL the rpms directly from redhat
(I can't), but if you rummage around on their web site, you will find
a list of mirror sites whence you can get them by ftp. There's even
a few listed for Australia!
Cheers.
Chris.

Take a look at <http://www.enteract.com/~lspitz/linux.html>.
It's a good beginner's guide.
Don't upgrade until at least 7.1 or 7.2, and then only if
you have some real reason to.

I keep looking through all of the init files I can find, but I can't
find where the system is being told to start sendmail. Every time I
boot up, it tries, and fails, but it takes an extra minute or two to
boot up because it keeps trying. Since I don't need it, I would just
assume it did not try, but I can't find where it is being told to try
to start it.

Is the drive setup as DOS/win partitions?
If the drive is completely used as a DOS/win drive and has no free space
for linux to use then you need to make room for linux to install into.
If you are going to dedicate the whole drive to linux then delete any
partitions that maybe on it, you will make all linux partitions during
the install.

Subject: Q: running GDM/XDM locks up linux (BP6+RH6.2)
Date: Mon, 02 Apr 2001 01:03:11 GMT
Hello everyone..
I am running RedHat 6.2 on a BP6 motherboard. It has an ATI Rage IIc
chipset based card in it and I'm using Mach64 server (XFree86
3.3.6-20). This linux box is being used as a local router (i run
ipchains and ipmasq), hence it doesn't have any external devices
attached to it (eg, monitor/keyboard/mouse) except two internal NICs
(both tulip based cards).
gdm/xdm server starts up without any problem. It's when I connect to
the linux machine using XWin32 through XDMCP Query, it locks up the
linux box -- the net routing stops, i can't ping the machine, or
telnet/ssh in. Previously in RH5.2, I did not encouter this lock-up
problem with xdm. Do I need to enable/disable anything special in
RedHat6.2 with xdm/gdm config files to achieve this remote login
functionality? I would like to be able to get the GNOME/Enlightenment
desktop on my windows machine..
The thing which made me believe that it's more of a xdm/gdm problem then
a network/setup issue is that I can run any X programs (xterm, netscape)
by redirecting DISPLAY enviornment variable to my windows machine (which
is running XWin32 or similar X clients). The linux box doesn't lock up
in this case.
If you have any comments or similar experiences with this setup, please
comment. Thanks a lot for your help.
Regards
Salman Moghal

XDMCP requests.

Hi,
i have a 'useradd' problem but not sure how to solve it.
I want to move the 'passwd', 'shadow' and 'group' files to another
location/parition, and then put symbolic links to them. Everything seems
to work. I rebooted the machine and manage to login. I check the
/etc/passwd (and the other 2 files), and the links are there. They are
pointing/linking to the new locations.
But then the problem is, everytime I add a user (useradd <username>),
the passwd, shadow and group files are restored to its original location
(/etc dir) instead of the partition I wanted them to be. The links are
gone and the actual files are back. can someone explain this to me, and
how can i place them into a different dir?
Thanks in advance. Please cc a reply to my mail box too (

I've been trying to get my system to work with sound for a while, now.
I finally compiled 2.2.19 with sound support for SB Live! Value card
(emu10k1). I did not think it was working, for a while, but it gives
no error messages, now, and dmesg says it is loading ok. I tried
playing an au file, and, much to my surprise, it worked. So, then I
tried playing a wav file, and that worked, too. But, if I put an audio
cdrom into the cdrom drive, and try to play it, I get nothing from the
speakers. (If I put earphones into the earphone jack on the cdrom
drive, everything is fine, so I know the cdrom is working.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

I am not exactally sure why anyone would want to change the location of their
/etc files but thats another story. A quick look at the system calls that are
performed when the "useradd" process will reveal that you are fighting a
losing battle.
As part of the user creation process, useradd actually creates a temporary
file in the /etc directory where it basically copies over all the other
password entries and then appends the new user to the end. At the completion
of this step, it then executes a rename command which unlinks the file that
was previously there (your symbolic link) and then plants the /etc/passwd
file. This is the same for your /etc/shadow and /etc/group files as well.
Take a look at the following snippet:
[...]
open("/etc/passwd+", O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_TRUNC, 0666) = 6
[...]
rename("/etc/passwd+", "/etc/passwd") = 0
[...]
To get around your problem you are going to have to either write a wrapper
around the useradd program which copies the files back and restores your
symoblic links, or write your own adduser function.
See ya
