Aha! So "PC2100" must be a brand name, and "CL2.5" must be a
specification. This leaves me puzzled .. if "PC1600" is also a brand name,
and it conforms to a specification "CL2", then how can you say that

Now we have PC2100A, supposedly a brandname, being CL2, a spec. If I

you use the SysV init editor to take the various daemons out of the
runlevels you don't want them to load. This effectively doesn't allow
them to load when the system boots.

just comment out the appropriate lines in inetd.conf or if RH 7.0 uses
xinetd.conf instead then edit that file to disable the services from
listening on their associated ports, thus closing the ports down.

Yes, there are players. xine and xmovie have both worked for me as
software-only players.

For hardware, opensource.creative.com is one place to get dxr2 support. I
used to use it, but haven't for a long time since I got rid of the card
to free up a slot. Note: it has to be a true dxr2 and not an inlay card
(if it uses the external patch cable you should be okay, IIRC, but if it
uses the internal ribbon cable, you're SOL)

There is also support for the hollywood/dxr3 cards, but I've never used
it either.

There are others, but I've never used them...

It's only puting a kernel image into the RAM drive. It's not installing
the distro there, lol. The distro is over 5 gigs in totality; why would
they put that into a RAM drive? You get it to install onto the hard disk
just by simply going thru the installation. You choose your packages and
define your partitions and mountpoints. After the partitions are formatted, and u have
your packages selected, the files are copied.

> If I need to
> copy the files to the hard disk, how does one do that after aborting

well, the partitions need to be formatted first which means you will need
a Linux boot disk with at least the mke2fs command on it to format the partition
with an ext2 filesystem. You are basically getting into a HUGE project
by installing the files yourself. Each package is in an RPM so you would
have to install the RPMs to the partition and hope all the boot and
configuration files are correct. I don't think they will be though b/c
they are edited after the main part of the installation is completed and
if u don't go thru that part then the files won't be configured for your
system.

I think the command "chkconfig" is part of what you are looking for.
Do "man chkconfig" to see the manpage -- basically, the way it is used
is that you do "chkconfig --list" and it will list the daemons and
which runlevels for which they are turned on. Then do "chkconfig
--del <service>" for the stuff you don't use.

But that's not all there is to turning off services; some services are
started through the inetd process. For this you have to look in
/etc/xinetd, and edit that file, and restart the inet service.

X11 has ports because you can run a program on another remote machine
which displays onto your machine. I.e., you can telnet into a machine
at school or work, set the $DISPLAY value appropriately, and then run
netscape or xterm or anything other X program and the window will
appear on your monitor, not the remote one.

If you are interested in closing off ports and otherwise making your
machine secure, check out this tool; it should guide you through doing
all this and probably a few things you wouldn't have thought of:

Modutils are needed for RUNNING modules, not for making them.

You certainly need 2.4.0 modutils, because nothing publicly released
earlier understands the new directory layout. Yes, you can add
the path[] stuff in by hand in modules.conf ... but why bother.

Hello,
I decided to join the group of linux users about a year ago and have
since grown to love the operating system. The learning curve has been quite
steep but has been consistently getting better with time.
Recently I re-installed my sistem to Redhat 7.0 and noticed that I have
a lot of copies of the following processes running from initial startup even
though I haven't done much configuration changes from the default setup. I
have the commands I ran and the actual number of running processes below.
Any pointers as to why this is happening and how I can correct the
problem will be very much appreciated.
Note: I have the webserver installed, even though I don't use the it.
Just thought I'd play around with it a while, so all those deamons couldn't
possibly be spawned by use of the webserver.

not running it, or changing its configuration.

Something has triggered identd and it has kept 5 copies running

What are you worried about? You DO have swap enabled, don't you?

Darin,

Thanks. I will try this the next time it happens. I was able to make a
boot disk on my computer at work that is also running Red Hat 7.0. This
was enough to bring almost everything up (including X Windows) so I could
easily get to /etc/conf.modules.

When I tried to use the boot disk for the computer that was hanging, it
would also hang loading the sound driver.

I'm not sure what is wrong with the sound. The system uses the via82 chip
set and sndconfig sets up the via82cxxx.o module. I just bought the
computer (the Statistics department uses the same brand of computer for
Linux, although I can't recall whether they are using RH 7.0 or RH 6.x,
but I would guess 6.1).

I tried several times to type "I" to get into interactive mode but could
not. I also tried the rescue mode but made no progress.
