As a precaution, add the following lines to your lilo.conf below the
default = linux
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.17-14
label=linux2217 <--- ( any label you wish )
read-only
root=/dev/hda1
save lilo.conf
In /boot, create an empty file called kernel.h-2.2.17-14
rm kernel.h ( the link ) then create a link to the new kernel.h file
ln -s kernel-2.2.17-14 kernel.h
the contents of the kernel.h file is generated automatically during
the boot process, all we're doing here is saving is the original, and
making preparations for the new kernel to write to it's own, unique
kernel.h.
Once that is done, run lilo and reboot... At the lilo prompt, select
the new kernel/label and everything should seem as though it was all a
bad dream.... when you're comfortable with everything under the new
kernel you can go back and remove the old 2.2.16 image references from
lilo.conf. For the time being, leave the other files in /boot alone.
Good luck,

Hi Eric..
I tried that command to rewrite the lilo.conf to the mbr again, but it
didn't work (still the LI error). I'm not sure if there's some additional
issues when it comes to using the Lilo-graphical login (default in Mandrake
8b3) or whether there's something else that's specific to the Mandrake
distro.
The system works nice with the boot floppy but of course this is less than
ideal. I also end up having to fdisk my mbr just to get back to Windows.
Actually writing this from KNode.. Linux totally rules (and i'm only hours
into it...hahahha)
Still.. if anyone knows what's going on with my A7V-Promise + Mandrake
issues, please help. Thanks in advance.

Read the Samba documentation, or use Swat to set up shared directories.
A typical share looks like this within the smb.conf file:
[share]
comment = Linux share
path = /path/to/directory
writeable = yes
guest ok = yes
create mode = 775
Once you've edited smb.conf to your liking, killall -HUP smbd .
>My other question: How do I see the Windows shares on the Linux box?
>What's the Linux equivalent of Network Neighborhood? Thanks.
"smbclient -L $HOST" should display a list of the services on HOST. KDE
2.0 has something that is supposed to work like Nyetwork Neighborhood,
but it doesn't work AFAICT. The "map network drive" function in Doze is
not available to normal users under Linux; only root can mount SMB
filesystems *unless* /etc/fstab is correctly set up and the user doing
the mount owns the mountpoint.
For example, if there were a machine called BORG and a shared directory
on BORG called WIBBLE, /etc/fstab could contain:
//BORG/WIBBLE /mnt/wibble smbfs noauto,user,workgroup=WORKGROUP 0 0
and theoretically any user could mount this filesystem. However, if
user bob tries to mount this filesystem, smbmnt(8) checks /mnt/wibble to
see if bob owns the directory. If bob doesn't, then smbmnt exits with a
misleading error message.
I *think* the KDE Samba client gets around this mess by using smbclient
as the back end, but like I said before, I haven't been able to get it
to work right.

Hi world,
I've just installed Mandrake 7.2 on an old Thinkpad 365...
The install went cleanly and the machine boots in text mode perfectly, but
when I try to start X up I just get a blank screen...
Im sure the problem will be a resolution/colour-depth thing of some type...
Can someone please tell me where to look for the X configuration tools?
Cheers and thanks in advance... Jerry.

You need SAMBA. For linux to see the Win shares, you need smbmount.
Check this site:
http://us2.samba.org/ you will find all the documentationt here to
setup samba. If samba is installed on your system, condider upgrading
it to at least 2.0.6 as well.

Hello Guys
I installed SuSE 6.4 on a Gateway 133Mhz machine a while ago, now I want to
upgrade my KDE 1.1 to 2.1.1, I found that to do that I need to have the
Kernel version 2.4, so I decided to upgrade my kernel 2.2.14 to 2.4 ! It
seems not simple at all!
I had to download the new kernel but in the Changes file I found another
list of libraries and other components that needs to be upgraded, I checked
the versions of my existing libraries and found that many of them needs
upgrade, then I started downloading them one by one from the ftp locations
mentioned in the kernel Changes file.
Now that I have every thing up-to-date from the gcc compiler to the XFree86
on CD's, how and where do I install all of them before compiling my new
kernel, is there a step by step simple way of doing this somewhere?
please help

Subject: the problem of using OS Loader to load Red Hat Linux
Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2001 01:45:58 +0000 (UTC)
I have installed the redhat linux 7.0 on my computer.
There are 3 OSs: windows 98, windows 2000, redhat linux 7
There are 4 partions: 3 primary, 1 extended.
Partion 1: Primary FAT32 2.5G
Partion 2: Extended FAT32 6.5G
Partion 3: Primary Ext2 2.6G
Partion 4: Primary Swap 0.3G
I want to use the windows2000 OS Loader to load the redhat linux, so the
lilo is installed on the hda3. The contents of lilo.conf is as following:
boot=/dev/hda3
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
lba32
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
default=linux
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-22
label=linux
read-only
root=/dev/hda3
other=/dev/hda1
label=dos
===========================================
I do the following steps to use OS Loader to load linux:
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/c -t vfat
dd if=/dev/hda3 bs=512 count=1 of=/mnt/c/bootsect.lin
Modiified the C:\boot.ini
Add this line: c:\bootsect.lin = "Redhat Linux"
But when I reboot and choose "Redhat Linux" to start linux, there are
nothing on the screen. It seems that the system is halted.
What's the problem? The version of LILO is 21.4-4, Are there the problem of
1024 Cyl?
Thanks for your help.
