I have difficulties in mounting the ide cdrom. I've tried:

# mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
# mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/cdrom as a block device (maybe
'insmod driver'?)
# mount -t insmod /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
mount: fs type insmod not supported by kernel

Please give me a hand, TIA

Sometime there are pop errors, and I'm interested in seeing which machine
they are coming in from without having to do it manually :)

I got those 01's just the other day after forgetting
to rerun lilo following a kernel upgrade. Doing so
  fixed it.

Can't say if this is the only reason they'd appear or
how this could come about on a new install.

Thanx, Eric.

I heard that Lilo must reside in the lowest 1024 cylinders(?) (I tried it to
write on MBR), so I think that 35 Gigs for Win (installed before) are too
much.

I skipped the bootdisk creation, then I tried to configure the XFree, my
monitor was detected right, the video chip too (GeForce 32 MB DDR, but it
contains SDRAM), I said 'No clock chip' (recommended), but after this there
was reported an X server error.
I thought the installation/configuration before probably was uncomplete
because of the cylinder error?

Best regards -- Matthias

I've gotten similar errors in the past. Have you tried disabling the "PnP

`ls -al /dev/cdrom`

Where does it point to?
Is that your cdrom?

Install the 2 windows into 2 primaries on drive-1
leaving enough freespace for Linux & swap (freespace
to be formatted with cfdisk or fdisk or Linux install
uti AFTER windows is/are on).

   c1: x.x gb
   c2: y.y gb
c3: z.z gb can be another windows,
one of them shud work >|:-)
hda5: 2 gb? Transfer Partition you can use
to move stuff around, can be fat, vfat,
ext2 as needed even changing daily.
hda6: 5 gb Linux, many gurus advise several partitions
instead of just a single big one.
 hda7: swap 128 or 256 mbs?
hda8: 2 gb ..maybe another maintenance Linux parti?

 Maybe Drive-2?

The install uti should be able to place Lilo (the
Linux booter) in the disk root (mbr). It gives you a
GUI boot dialog with custom menu entries. Once you have
booted Linux you can mod the boot config file at will.

Some distros' installers may not insert the lba32 option
(below) required to boot beyond BIOS/LBA reported cyl-1024.
In such a case you would be fenced low for at least one
installation. Some install floppies (SuSE) will allow
booting an installed Linux system without using the
just installed boot mechanisms and this allows you to
edit the config for subsequently unlimited booting.

Here's an example
  2 disk
    2 doze
      2 linux
        2 kernel config..

# LILO configuration file
# Start LILO global Section

Hmm, strange
Is it connected? Correctly?

try `cat /proc/ide/hd[a-z]/model`
Does it show up somewhere here?
Is it detected by the BIOS? Some BIOS'es totally disable
an IDE connector when nothing is detected on it.
That way linux wouldn't be able to find it either.
`cat /proc/devices|grep -i ide` should show ide0 and ide1
If not, you should probably change the detection in the BIOS.

Date: 10 Apr 2001 07:18:15 GMT

Hey all. I am trying to install Mandrake Corporate Server 1.0.1 on my other
system, but there seems to be a problem with the installer.I can get through
it, right up to the point where it's about to ask what packages to install.
But then I get an error like "can't sqrt (some negative number, can't
remember)" and get sent back to the partitioning step. It won't go past
that.

Some relevant system info:
Mobo chipset: Intel i815e
CPU: Pentium 3 CuMine 800 MHz
Hard drive: Some IBM, 30 GB, IDE
Partitioning: Ext2 partition filling most of the HD, with a ~500 MB swap
partition at the end
RAM: 192 megs SDRAM
Booting from CD

By the way, Mandrake 7.2 installs just fine, but I need some of the stuff
Corp Server has. Is this a CPU problem?

Redhat has for the past few releases installed the uncompressed vmlinux
file into the /boot directory, and gives no reason I could find for that.

It is remotely possible that some commands will search the symbol table
of vmlinux rather than reading the /boot/System.map for symbol values,
as is quite common on traditional unix systems.

nah, RH7 contains a lilo that's new enough. It's probably not an issue.

first of all, your reply is realy difficult to read.
Please reply below the questions/answers next time.

Next, you should make a bootdisk. always.

But first try if the install already succeeded.
put the CD in again, and at the lilo prompt, enter
"linux rescue root=/dev/hda3" (this hda3 may be wrong,
it depends on how you partitioned)

Does it boot linux?

I read the kernel-upgrade how-to and fixed it.

After upgrading the non-kernel packages, kernel and modules as in:
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/howto/kernel-upgrade/kernel-upgrade-3.html

In order to execute the command: mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.2.17.img
2.0.17-14 , I logged in as root using "su -" (I couldn't execute mkinitrd
when I used "su" without the " - "). Then I executed: mkbootdisk 2.2.17-14
to create the new bootdisk.

the CD-ROM Drive is not detected!

I installed the RedHat through the CD-ROM Drive last year.
Now, I would like to install something more from the CD,
but the CD-ROM Drive just won't open!
Its little green light never turns on!

How can I proceed??
