What does it mean when lilo gives a Fatal: Kernel /boot/vmlinuz is too
big? It's only 1.5 Megs - what is the physical size limit on a
kernel????
(Trying to install Caldera on /dev/hda1 with 64Mb RAM, 2.0GB disk

What do you think it means?

uncompressed

I don't know

That's good.
> Thanks!
You're welcome.
But, you probably want to know what you did wrong?
You probably copied the uncompressed kernel image to /boot.
Remember you ran `make bzImage`?
That file (/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage) is the compressed
kernel image.

Only! It should be about 500K, max!

The same size as a PCs real memory, more or less, since it has to
fit here before it can start being uncompressed. About 640KB.
If you don't like that, use bzImage instead. It does the decompression
bit by bit. But you still should be aiming at about 1MB max!

Well, learn the meaning of the word "kernel module".

This is not hdb4

So do this.
(at the lilo prompt, you enter "linux root=XXX")
either try the root=/dev/hdb4 option, or if that still fails
the root=03:68 option should work.

Did you run `/sbin/lilo -v` with this lilo.conf?

Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 13:26:06 +0200
Hello!
In 2.4.3 there is a new driver for the aic7xxx Adaptec scsi chips.
While upgrading from 2.4.2, this new driver was used automatically (just
copied the old .config). But with it, my scsi cdrom drive is not
recognized. With 2.4.2 and prior it is.
Is the driver still buggy or have I missed something?
TIA
P.S. Please mail me a copy of your answer. I cant read news at home for

Yes, please send it to me! Without the driver working the box is

Subject: Problem with dual boot
Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 12:39:06 GMT
Hi all,
Sorry if I sound like a newbie. I had a windoze98 on my home PC with
4 partitions(C,D,E,F) and I wanted to install SuSE 7.1
SO, I deleted the F: drive(which was empty) using windows fdisk and
installed SuSE 7.1 from CD. Everything went off fine, I put LILO on MBR
and the next time I went to SuSE, after a few minutes the system crashed
and I found that my motherboard and CPU had to be replaced.
Now, after changing the motherboard and CPU, I have reinstalled SuSE
on the same partition but this time, I have put LILO on a floppy.
Iam afraid to put LILO on MBR but it is a pain booting from floppy.
Any suggestions?
THanks in advance,
Anirudh

I can sympathize with your problems, I have just, today, succeeded in
getting Caldera OpenLinux to boot up and work. It took me a week of hair
tearing frustration but I finally found that the problem was making
partitions for Linux and Linux swap higher on the hard disk than the 1024
cylinder limit. Partition Magic shows the limit as a small black triangle on
the disc map. Make sure your Linux is set below that mark. Using Boot magic
is quite easy once everything is installed, just follow the instructions.
After booting up I found the system very daunting and not as pretty as
Windows and I still have to find out how to get my sound card and printer to
work as well as the CD burner etc. I may give it all up and go back to
surfing the web.

I once looked into where these messages came from. Turns out there
is a single file that each RC script runs to load some "shell
functions" such as "daemon" that in turn start a service and produce
the [OK] message output. (This was on SusE and Red Hat I believe,
but I could be mistaken it was a while ago that I looked.) So it
seems to me you have one shell script file to edit for this change.
look at the top of any of the rc scripts in .../init.d for a line
such as:
. functions
and then edit the file "functions" (it may not be called "functions").
You could for example send these messages to a file.
Other possibilities include switching the virtual console early.
The messages may be then sent to a single virtual console that
the users don't see by default. I don't know how to do this or
even if it is possible to do this early enough in the boot
sequence to be of use to you.
Another possibility is displaying a splash screen during boot up.
I think there is software for this, I have seen systems that
have such a screen, but I don't know where to get the software.
Hope this helps!

The command 'pidof ProcessName' will give you the process ID of the
process you specify. You can use this in a cron job/shell script,
depending on what actions you want taken when the process is dead.

Subject: Low X Window Resolution...........HELP!!!
Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 18:09:20 GMT
Hi all,
I've just installed Linux Red Hat v6.2 for the first time on a second
computer for school purposes.
The installation seemed to be a success, except for the fact that the X
Window resolution is extrememly low. I selected 8-bit 1024x768 during the
set-up process, but it looks more like 600x480 or lower. I also selected the
option to have X load on start up.
My question is:
Can I change the screen resolution somewhere within the X Window? If not,
what would be the easiest way to do this?
I'm guessing this must be a common problem, so I apologize if I am asking a
question that has already been aked & answered a million times. I've been a
DOS & Windows user since the beginning, and this Linux OS is a whole new
world for me. The school book I have (A guide to Unix using Linux) does not
seem to cover this problem.

Craig,
you might also consider using linuxconf. it's a very powerful
configuration tool. it can be run from the command prompt (just type
linuxconf) or from within the GUI.
goto control, control panel, control service activity.
it's pretty self explanatory from there. but... BE CAREFUL. you don't
want to just start turning off services. some are required for proper
operation.
Gerard.

Well, there are no devices with that major, and the kernel modules are
OSS rather than ALSA, so I'm not sure what issues I might have there. I
tried using char-major-14, which is what /dev/sndstat uses, and it all
loaded fine but didn't in any way... work.
Thanks for the tips though, once I get this working or give up and turn

I'd like to use the drivers which come with the stock kernel. Well,
2.4.3-ac3, as stock as that might be.

Normally, if things went well, you could use "CTRL+ALT++" the control+alt+the

This might be a problem... The installation defaulted to a standard vga
