very odd (ls -l /dev/* |grep "3,[ ]*44"):

crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 3, 44 Jun 8 2000 /dev/ttyrc

device 03:44 is not hbd4 on my system! And it shouldn't be on your system
What does ls -l /dev/hdb* on your system show?

<extract from your lilo.conf>
boot=/dev/hdb4
root=/dev/hdb4

And putting the lilo code on hdb4 might also be problematic.
Are you sure you're booting the code from hdb4, and not some
old remainder in the MBR?

And I looked through your first post. I never used devfs before.
Did you try leaving that out?

Perhaps someone here can help with a bizarre problem that has gotten me
stumped. It is one of those things that seems like it should be really
simple to fix (and in the future prevent), but I have done quite a bit of
searching for a solution and found none.

To recap: I am still trying to duplicate a Linux hard disk by making a
tarball of the original disk (minus the /mnt and /proc directory trees --
this time I included /tmp in the tarball), putting the tarball onto CD-R
(together with instructions for the next person), partitioning the new disk,
unpacking the tarball onto the new disk, and then fixing Lilo (and a few
configuration files as necessary) on the new disk. The idea is to send the
CD-R to somebody else so that they can recreate the Linux installation of the
original disk on their new hard disk. It ALMOST works right, but I am still
having the annoying problems that I posted earlier (not the Lilo problem --
that is fixed -- thanks to all who replied here and to the tech support
department where I work):

> Anyway, Lilo now works without further problems, but I found a

I haven't solved the problem yet, but I noticed that in /var/log/system, atd
says that it could not redirect output due to permission being denied. I also
noticed that /tmp did not get the same permissions as on the original hard
disk. Hmmm . . . fishy. I will have to do some more research into options to
the tar command to see if I can prevent this from happening. But in the
meantime, if anyone here knows of anything else that could cause this to
happen (other than a corrupted file, which seems unlikely now), I would like
to hear about it. Later, if I manage to figure this out or somehow get the
right instructions away from here, I will post the answer in case somebody
else who reads this newsgroup has a similar problem.

WHAT couple of things? You are supposed to do, for example:

       mkdir safeplace
       cd safeplace
       tar xzvf blahblahgccblahblah.tgz
       cd ..
       mkdir larry

You probably forgot to put "p" among the tar options, both on making
the tar and on unpacking it. So /tmp probably has wrong perms.

You want a block device, not the char device. 0344 isn't hex, is it?
Naww. If it's really 3:44, then that's /dev/hda44 !!!!!!!

Highly improbable. Perhaps he has miswritten the entry in lilo?

One tends to have to leave it out at boot, if one wants to retain ones
sanity. It's something like "devfs=noboot" (don't quote me) as
a bootup parameter if you want to disable it then. Check!

Hello,

The old aic7xxx driver is still available with 2.4.3 if you are having
problems with the new one. When you configure your kernel with "make
menuconfig" or "make xconfig" just select the old driver instead of the new
one. The new driver is enabled by default.

Subject: Redhat Install, no floppy + backpack cdrom
Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 07:46:39 GMT

Now the floppy drive on this old laptop is kaputs, so i'm left with
loadlin as a means of getting into the redhat install (the backpack
cdrom is not bootable).

I use loadlin vmlinuz initrd=initrd.img
This gets me into the install, but now, im screwed bc it needs the
driver disk for the cdrom.

Possibly, what i could do is try to squeeze the base install onto the
hard drive and install from there, but that would mean messing with
fips, in order to split the 'tiny' 400 meg partition into 2. If i
could somehow get the cdrom detected, then i would just wipe out the
existing partition, and go from there.

Is there a way i can get the driver.img loaded as well with loadlin? I
seriously doubt it, but maybe its possible..
I would prefer to get to some sort of solution this way.

Also, im not partial to any distro, and if someone knows of a way that
i could get another distro installed onto this thing, i would
appreciate that info as well.

Thanx

no it's decimal.
And indeed I overlooked the fact that this was not a block device,
but it was the only devicenode I have that has this major:minor combination.

> Naww. If it's really 3:44, then that's /dev/hda44 !!!!!!!

Which isn't created by default. And I'm not sure if the driver
can handle it. (It probably can use up to 63 partitions max. but I'm not
sure)

That's an option I didn't consider.
But it's a possibilty (if the OP didn't c'n'p his lilo.conf)

Then I suspect this to be the problem, as the devfs message appears
just before the root FS is mounted

Does anyone know how to remove a file with bad User & Group ID's?

While tinkering with hdparm (setting -X66 on a drive that did not like
it!), my system locked. When rebooted, the file hdparm had become a block
device file belonging to user "8633". As root, I can't delete it.

I have tried adding a user with that Id, no go.

My temporary solution was to move /sbin to /.crap and rebuild /sbin. I
could then re-install the hdparm RPM.

I am sure there is a neat way of handling these problems.

PS. Anyone playing with hdparm should be VERY CAREFULL, especially
enabling UDMA.
