There is a conversion described from Raid-1 to Raid-5. But backup is
recommended anyway.

The problem is that if you really have a lot of data 100s of GB backup
becomes really expensive. I am looking for a possibility to upgrade a
Raid-7 array with further drives. I will store digital sat recordings,
which are by no means absolutely critical data to me. A loss would be
very annoying, but by no means catastrophic. I will start with 4 disks
in a Raid-5 array and may later upgrade disk by disk when the space is
becoming necessary. As each disk will be a Maxtor 80 GB, backup for all
the data would be very expensive. I am looking for a strategy to make
this upgrade possible without to much hassle.
I see two basic strategy:
1. Modification at the block level
As we know the layout of the old and new raid configuration we can copy
the blocks around to match the new configuration and then enable the
raid to reconstruct the parity. The size of the converted partitions
shouldn't change to avoid resizing filessystems which may not be able to
do so. The new space should be added at the end of the converted
partition and can be used for new partitions.
But a crash during the modification can make all the data unusable.
2. Split the large 80 GB disks into smaller junks of 10-20 GB partitions
This way we have multiple raid-5 on the disks and can use space on the
new disk as temporary storage and so convert the whole disk step by step
until all raid-5 partitions incorporate the new disk.
I personally would prefer the 1. solution if it does proper
checkpointing so that a crash wouldn't cause the loss of any data. But
there is currently no software available that can do this.
So the second strategy seems to be the only feasable at the moment.
Do you have any other ideas?
Emil

Yes, RedHat will take care of it. Just answer the questions carefully
during the installation process. Don't worry.

A lot of the time when you know what kind of motherboard and processor
you want you can find it as a "barebones system" which will include the
case, powersupply, motherboard, and processor for a pretty fair price.
If you don't know what to get then you might want to take a look at this
link to get an idea what to get and is compatable.
http://www.linhardware.com/
It isn't hard to build your own system.

Subject: little shell/script question
Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 20:39:02 +0200
Greetings,
i like to format a lot of text files with one call of my script (lets assume
cat is my script). I've done the following:
find * -type f | grep txt$ | xargs cat > ahugefile
The above command writes the contents of all files that end with txt into
one file called 'ahugefile'.
The problem is that i like to create a new file for each sourcefile.
How do i have to modify the above command, that each sorcefile will be piped
into a file with a different name than the
sourcefile?
I hope someone knows...
Thanks in advance for any help,
Mike.

Subject: VFAT and 8 bit character in file names
Date: 16 Apr 2001 16:14:23 +0000
I am running Linux Mandrake 7.2 and thus have kernel 2.2.17. I have
my hard disk partitioned with two Windows partition and some Linux
partitions. I want one of the Windows partition to be shared with my
Linux system. This has given me a good struggle trying to get the
handling of 8 bit characters in file names correct.
I currently have the following line in my /etc/fstab
/dev/hda2 /winshare vfat
umask=3D0,nosuid,iocharset=3Diso8859-1,quiet,ex=
ec 0 0
The iocharset setting enables me to display file names correctly,
i.e., if a file is written under Windows with an 8 bit character,
e.g., `=E6' (ae ligature), in the name, then the name is correct under Li=
nux.
If however, I create a file with an 8-bit character in the name under
Linux, the 8.3 file name will contain the character encoding using
latin-1 rather than an appropriate DOS code page, e.g., the character
code used for `=E6' (ae ligature)is 230 and it thus becomes a `=B5' (mu)
under Windows. (The long name encoding gets correct, so if the file
does not start with a 8 bit character, the 8.3 name gets wrong, but
Windows uses the translation table and display the name as intended).
I have tried playing with setting ``codepage=3D850'' (instead of the
standard 437) as an option to vfat in /etc/fstab, but that does not
change anything.
Is there any way to get the mapping correct the other way such that
8.3 names of files created under Linux uses a DOS/Windows character
encoding rather than latin-1.
Thanks in advance

Here's a HOWTO on Windows 2000 & Linux:

Maybe some clues here:

Thanks to some great help from this NG (yea Alan N.!) I
got my Win98, BeOS & a superset of DeadRat 7.0 booting ...
but it required editing of lilo.conf to see the correct Linux
partition.
Unfortunately that won't work for you, because Windoze NT/2000
REALLY wants to control the boot process. So I think your main
trouble will be configuring boot.ini to see your BeOS partition
and boot from same.

you want something more like
export DISPLAY=:0
that semi-colon between the two zeroes is probably screwing things up
also. you could be more specific and do this
export DISPLAY=:0.0

RedHat 7 uses scripts in /etc/profile.d to set the global PATH environment
variable. Create a new file in this dir, like mypath.sh and add the new
paths. Scripts ending in .sh will be executed for bash shells.
Worked for me.

Check to make sure the BIOS isn't using the memory hole. If it is
disable it and see if that correects it. If that doesn't do it then you
need to add a line like this to /etc/lilo.conf just after the
"default=" line
append="mem=64M"

Subject: configuring sound?
Date: 17 Apr 2001 00:48:10 GMT
Hi, i am trying to get sound to work on my toshiba 720cdt and having
*no* luck i now turn to the linux Usenet groups for more help.
my lil' 720cdt has a cs4232 sound chip and i am running SuSE 7.0
which supports this chip. For some reason the setup does not find
this chip and tells me i have to set it up manually.
I have referred to the linux on toshi tecras
(http://www.cck.uni-kl.de/misc/tecra710) and have found that i
know less about modules, irqs, and coms than i thought (shows my
newbieness). The following is what the document suggests:
CONFIG_AUDIO=y
CONFIG_MIDI=y
CONFIG_YM3812=y
CS4232_BASE=534 WSS I/O Address (534/608/e84/f44)
CS4232_IRQ=5 WSS & SBPro IRQ Level (5/7/9/11/15)
CS4232_DMA=1 WSS & SBPro DMA Playback Channel (0/1/3)
CS4232_DMA2=0 WSS & SBPro DMA Record Channel (0/1/3)
CS4232_MPU_BASE=330 Note: linux/drivers/sound/Readme.cards says
that the MPU401 synthesizer emulation does not yet work on the CS4232
CS4232_MPU_IRQ=5
DSP_BUFFSIZE=65536
I tried using yast2 but found it about as confusing at just straight
editing the modules.conf (assuming that is the file i need to be
editing). I uncommented the following lines and made a few changes
which leaves me with the following:
alias char-major-14 cs4232
post-install cs4232 modprobe "-k" opl3
options cs4232 io=0x534 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0 mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=5
options opl3 io=0x388
Does this look right? given what was suggested in the tecra FAQ? I
realize that my delimma is probably rather elementary but none the
less i am unable to figure it out. Any help would be greatly
appreciate and i will gladly butter up the individual(s) that can
help me figure it out.
thank you,
-Gaiko
