That is wrong. The iso is bootable by default. Don't know Nero very
well, but you should have an option to 'burn from cd image' 'burn cd
from iso' or something like that. And do not make Nero choose a boot
image - the iso is already bootable...

Mandrake 8.0 ships with an older version of Red Hat's gcc 2.96 compiler.
According to the latest surveys by IDC, Inc. 75% of all Linux
developers use Red Hat. I personally use Red Hat. But you should try them
both and find out for yourself which one you perfer.

For C programming it doesn't really matter which compiler you use...2.95.3
or egcs 1.1.2 will work fine. But for C++ you should use a more up to date
compiler like Red Hat's 2.96. It's faster and generates considerably better
code.

8mhz? I don't think they made 486's slower than 25mhz. Or did
you mean 8MB RAM? In that case it should be OK, provided you're
careful with what you install and run on the box. If it's simply
a firewall machine there should be no problem.

That's kind of like asking "which toothpaste is best, Colgate or
Crest?" It probably doesn't matter much. Just try the one most
convenient for you. I started with RedHat because my local public
library had some linux books with CD's in the back and of those
the RedHat CD was the most recent. I installed from that and it
worked fine.

Hell my mini linux on a floopy running on a 386 dx40 with no harddrive
has no trouble serving as a NAT firewall. 486 is plenty fast enough.

Eh what? XFree86 has its own mouse handling so no need to use gpm _in_
X. And gpm can run while X is running and vice versa, so I'm afraid, I
do not see the problem?

Not without more info. What is the error above "ln swapper task - not
syncing" (You need _all_ of it). And more details about the hardware...

I'll probably not be able to help you myself - but I certainly know that
the above error comes after a bunch of errors - and they are important.

You could try to boot with the cd. So do a 'linux
root=/dev/<linux-root>' - and tell if you can boot this way. If you can
just get into the system, there is light (and hope) at the end of the
tunnel.

Also - what version of RedHat?

Hi,

I installed a Mandrake 7.2 gateway on my LAN (as a print server and many
more fonctions)

I'm fed up with cups, and what the hell did we do to be obliged to use this
shit, to see Samba working properly ?

Here is one of my problems : Cups always see a printer I have NEVER
configured, and the more I delete it using http://www.host.ld:631, the more
it creates new "virtual" printers I never asked for.

Then, I cannot use the other "good" printer (always seen as stopped on the
web interface)

You know, i'm still at the beginner level using RPM to install new
components... so :

I tried removing all packages (cups, cups-drivers, samba, samba-common,
samba-client) all config files and directories (/var/spool/cups, /etc/cups,
/etc/smb.conf, /etc/printcap, etc/etcaetera.... :), I even tried lots of
different versions of those components..... I killed daemons, I even
rebooted........ WHAT THE HELL CAN I DO TO DELETE THOSE PRINTERS ???!!!!

If anyone knows exactly which files I should edit/delete, please anwer my
request, or else I... or else I... or else I install a Windows NT server
box instead !!

Thx

I am planning to install RH 7.1 on a 30GB hard drive. I have done
this with RH 7.0 but I found that it operates very slowly. I had
partitioned the disc as 64MB linux swap and the rest as linux native.

Would it speed up the operation if I divide the disc into smaller
partitions; e.g; 10GB at /, 10GB at /usr and remainder at some other
point like /var ?

I am planning to replace the 7.0 since I was not very happy with it so
I will be partitioning from scratch.

If this is not the correct newsgroup, please forgive:

I'm trying to setup a RH 7.1 box with two pentium III 1 Gig processors and
1.5 Gig Ram. I've installed two partitions, one that works and one that
doesn't. The one that works is running RH 7.1 however using the BOOT
kernel, while the partition that doesn't work is attempting to a compiled
kernel with:
i.      SMP flag set;
ii.     RTC (Real Time Clock) flag set;
iii. MTRR (Memory Type Range Register) flag set; and
iv. No Advance Power Management flag set

As per the HOWTO.

And yet I get the following boot sequences messages prior to the "crash"

CPU1: Intel Pentium III (Coppermine) stepping 06
CPU1 has booted.
Total of 2 processors activated (4010.80 BogoMIPS).
Before bogocount - setting activated=1.
Boot done.
ENABLING IO_APIC IRQs
...changing IO-APIC physical APIC ID to 2 ... ok.

... And then nothing.

Any insight into how I can get this partition working would be greatfully

It might be best to reply to my email as well as posting here, so that I
see your response.

about is partitioning. My computer came with 1 40GB ide HD partitioned

drive "D" (D is basically an empty FAT32 partition). I would like to put
linux on drive D, what are my best options for partitioning? should I use
fdisk or GNU parted? Forgive me, I am new to this!

No you can't. Other mailservers can't learn anywhere that yours isn't
listening to a standard port. So they will fail to deliver when trying
to go to aro.mine.nu:25 instead of aro.mine.nu:WXYZ.

You can use the MX records to redirect mail for one domain to a
mailserver in another domain, but that's all you can do. This can only
be done at the level of nameserver records. That information is retrieved
with the command "host -t MX domain.com" . In my domain that will give
output like this:
        host -t MX hermanbruijn.com
        hermanbruijn.com MX 10 mail.hermanbruijn.com
        hermanbruijn.com MX 15 mail.bruyn.org
        hermanbruijn.com MX 20 mail.hemkes.net

The lower the number, the higher the priority of the mailserver. So the
first choice top deliver mail is is the host mail.hermanbruijn.com.
Second choice, when the first one isn't available for whatever reason,
is mail.bruyn.org. Last choice is mail.hemkes.net.

The best thing to do in your case is to have a mailbox somewhere else, where
all mail for a domain ends up in a single mailbox. Then use a combination of
fetchmail and procmail to get the mail from that mailbox, and deliver it
to the correct accounts on your local machine.

Not stupid, but quite a learning experience. Linux distributions
generally require that you learn a bit more about computing and
configuration then is required when running a recent version of Windows.
That is also what results in having more control over what exactly
happens on your computer. For me that is all the better, I used to like
the challenge, and now it allows me to do the things I do much more
efficient.
But in your case, it soounds like it would be better to to stick to
whatever you are using now. Why try to fix it, if it isn't broken?

First question back: do you really think you need Linux? Is there anything
that you can't do from within Windows? Of course you can put yourself into
hot water, but...

Yes.

Okay, this was the short answer, but as it is you may find many things
that work only with Windows or software on Windows.

If you need a computer for just that, surfing the WWW, mailing and
chatting with people and you're happy with as it is, fine and whoever
is having a problem with that is the stupid one.

It has nothing to do with being "computer illiterate" anyway, but
with using what suits you best.

Still should you know someone who's Linux and can help you can
play with both, given you've enough disk space as you can keep
both systems on the same machine.

Talking of help here since rendering your current system unusable,
can happen if you're doing the right thing wrong, isn't going to
help anyone either. Oh and of course no harm can come from having
a look at a life system first.

If not, then see your nearest library and search for some Unix
introductory literature as Linux is nothing but a Unix clone. It
may give you an idea whether it's "Yes, I *want* one, I need one,
I'd sell my grandma for one" or "Only over my dead body" ;)

Cheers,
Juergen

No, provided you can copy and paste, you're qualified enough, because
then you can ask for help in a useful manner when you get stuck.

The problem is with people who can't copy and paste, as then they can't
pass on any of the data they can see - but don't recognize - which
would enable the "experts" to help them help themselves.

I.e. you don't need any actual knowledge, just a reasonable mixture of
pride and humility.

I would do it a little differently

/home 2 GB
/boot 500 MB
/usr 10 GB
/var 10 GB
/ 5 GB
/stuff 2 GB
swap 500 MB

this way if you upgrade your system from say 7.1 to 8.0 but want to
format the hdd
you can format / /usr /var /boot but your /home and /stuff will
still have your data.
