I've had no luck either with Mandrake 8.0 and my Promise RAID
controller. I've not tried Rad Hat 7.2, but I can tell you Red Hat 7.1
is a no go either.

As far as I can tell, we have to wait for Promise to release the Red
Hat driver for it. Only then are we limited to using the Red Hat
distribution of Linux. I'm pretty sure they'd have to make a
Mandrake-8.0-specific driver for it to work there. The source code for
their driver can not be found anywhere on their website.

I'm considering getting a 3ware card because I don't think these
issues exist with their IDE RAID controller cards.

We're setting up RH 6.2 using some remote printers (JetDirect).

We start lpd, and can print to the remote printers using:

  cat <filename> | lpr -P <printcapentry>

but after a few requests (doesn't seem to be a consistent number), the
command above returns the following error:

lpr: connect: connection refused
jobs queued but cannot start daemon

This kills the lpd daemon, and therefore no printing works.

I've seen some back and forth on some linux sites about this problem, or at
least similar symptoms, but haven't read anything that works for us yet.

Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Lilo and System.map confusion
Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 16:52:27 +0100

I'm using Mandrake 7.2 and 2.2.17-21mdk

I'm somewhat confused about the role of /boot/System.map and /boot/map in
the installation of a kernel.

My understanding is that when I re-compile a kernel a new System.map-2.x.x
is created. On my system the current one, System.map-2.2.17-21mdk, is
linked to System.map. In order to use the new version of the kernel I
assume I must relink System.map to the new System.map-2.2.x.x. However,
presumably this will mean that at boot up only the new kernel will work (if
indeed it does work).

What I want to achieve is a situation in which I can choose any kernel or
kernel version from the Lilo menu, but I don't see how to do this given
that only one System.map seems to be current at any one time. I note that
there is a global entry of map=/boot/map. This file doesn't seem to have
changed after re-compilation.

Neither the kernel HOWTO nor the Lilo mini-HOWTO nor the Lilo man page seem
to explain this, at least not such that I can recognise it as an
explanation. I'd be very grateful if someone could explain what I need to
do to be able to have several options at boot time - or is this not
possible? Lilo objects if I put a separate map=... in the image section.

- Richard.

LILO's map (/boot/map) file has nothing to do with System.map files.

No, the System.map file is merely informational; it is used by programs
like ps(1) and klogd(8). The kernel does not use it. Other programs will
work (but may gripe).

when the Mandrake installer tries to install LILO, it gives me an error

xfs can serve fonts to remote sessions so the fonts need not
reside on the remote machine. This is useful for x terminals and
such. xfs can also serve font types not directly supported by X,
eg TrueType.

Does anyone know why I can't get my sound to work with my AMD K6-2 400Mhz

The sound audio adapter is bult into the motherboard (CM 18330 Audio
Adapter) In the documentaton Red Hat says that this is actually used on many
motherboards.

Linuz Red hat recognizes it but I can't seem to find the right mix of IRQ,
memory addresses, DMA's, etc to get it to work.

With the sound coming right off the motherboard one would thnk Linux would
have no trouble working with it (guess not)

Also I would go with Mandrake if you are a newbie or possiblyredhat.

You won't need X for the http install -- it just sees it as another method of
pulling files. Setting this up *should* be as simple as symlinking /mnt/cdrom to
somewhere in your html root. E.g.,
  ln -s /mnt/cdrom /var/www/html/RedHat

You can then tail -f the /var/log/html/access.log to see if a request is even
being made of the http server.

Was the laptop installed via kickstart or was it an existing installation?
The main thing I'm getting at is verifying that the network is live when the NFS
mount is attempted. The console messages don't seem to say either way. Can you
ping the dhcp address at any point? Any log messages from your nfs server
reflecting requests?

Hello All,

I just installed RedHat 7.1 and the installation went great.
I was quite impressed with the hardware detection, it got the video
card, monitor, NIC all correct.
But now I've run across a strange problem, I'm using the graphical logon
via xdm, and I can log in fine and use the machine all I want, when I
log off, the machine hangs. It's so bad it loses sync on the monitor and
I can't ping it from another machine.
This looks like a problem with X, so as an experiment I booted the
machine, and without logging in I went to another (WIN2k) machine and
telneted into the linux box. I then exported the display back to an
x-server running on the Win2k machine. Everthing worked fine and I could
log off and log back on with no problem. I didn't use xdm from the
remote machine, I just telneted in, exported the display, then started a
KDE session. I guess the question is, what exactly happens when you are
in run level 5 (graphical login) and you log off? does the x-server stop
and restart? Has anyone seen a problem like this and have an idea what
to try??

TIA
Dave

How is your dsl configured? ie: does you use dhcp, or are you assigned a
static ip behind their firewall and a dynamic ip from there to the outside
world? I've seen both configurations in my travels and the setup procedure
is slightly different for each. I assume that you have your network card
installed at this point, though if not, that should also be relatively
simple.

Hi, I have yet to get a working, bootable Linux install trying various
flavors. The farthest I get is to see the install apparently completed,
the GUI looks good, but on reboot, the screen fills with 1s & 0s
(actually appearing as "01" scrolling endlessly up off the otherwise
black video screen). The tries are with Debian GNU slink & a half
(which worked with a floppy boot fine, for a while, then mysteriously
stopped Monday), Caldera Open Linux v 1.3 & v. 2.3. V. 1.3 is not
supported by Caldera (I'll ask again); v. 2.3 is from a friend so I
can't ask Caldera for support since I didn't pay for the copy, and I
really don't know where to begin with Debian. I also have Boot/Partition
Magic 6. The LILO on my last try went to the "/" on the Linux drive
(standalone 2ndary slave). What was interesting was that I loaded the
Debian CD & designated the boot to go to "/usr", and then got on the
screen scrolling "02"s. So is this an MBR, LILO, other boot problem, or
other problem entirely? Primary master disk is w98se. Partition Magic
was used to configure root & swap partitions on Linux, but should I not
expect Boot Magic to boot the Linux? Thanks.
