They're not involved. The former is a debugging aid for kernel hackers.
The latter is part of a lilo boot sequence. If you don't debug and you
don't use lilo, then you need neither of them, yet you can still enjoy
your new kernel - which shows you the independence.

OK, I have a motherboard with a bit of a strange tendency. The year 2000 fix
on it crashed and was left incomplete. It can work with 21st century dates
no bother, but it can't remember the year after power down. Date time etc
are fine with the exception of the year field which goes back to 1994.
In dos, I just add a "date" command to the autoexec.bat so I am prompted to
enter the date before the system is booted and hence before it screws up all
my time stamps. How could I achieve a similar effect in Redhat, or indeed
any linux distro (as I am also building my own using linuxfromscratch.com).
Ideally I want the year set to 2001 automatically, but a prompt would be
fine...
Cheers.

Subject: mouse problem with red hat 7.1
Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 20:27:43 +0100
Hi
I installed the Red hat 7.1 version in graphical mode. Everything worked
fine and the mouse worked.
After the first boot the HW discovery utility (kudzu ?)appeared, telling
that the mouse was disabled.
I log in in text mode but I cannot start the GUI environment because the
mouse doesn't work. I have a PS/2 Microsoft Intellimouse with Intellieye
I tried to run mouseconfig and Xconfigurator but it doesn't work. They found
and error in line 5 of etc/sysconfig/mouse. The line 5 reports /dev/mouse.
It seems that the link is broken. I tried manually to recreate the link with
ln -s /dev/psmouse /dev/mouse but it failed.
I hope in your help.
Thank you

How about "date" ? ;-)
It needs to run as root though, for obvious reasons.

Are you sure it's not gpm hogging the mouse ?
If it is then you'd better either disable gpm (suggested) or point your
mouse towards /dev/gpmdata in X.

If by this you mean that you're giving the irq's and dma's and whatever
as arguments to the module when it loads, try not giving any arguments.
Chances are big it will figure out what to do by itself. I've never had
to mess with irq's or dma's in linux. Even on my desktop systems.

It doesn't, but you can't make a lilo.conf that allows you to place your
lilo beyond the 1024th cylinder mark AND work on older systems. So the
nice people at mandrake chose backwards compatibility instead of
gee-whiz features.
This isn't necessarily a problem though. You can leave it like that,
boot up with a floppy, and then configure it right from inside linux.
Looks like you're in for some documentation reading though.
Or you can also get partition magic, move over the windows partition 100
meg, and make a tiny /boot partition at the start of the drive. Either
approach is fine.

Ok, I think I understand.. so what you are saying, is that if I re-run the
install, and just NOT install LILO, I can boot off a floppy, and configure
LILO once I get into Linux, and it should work fine? This won't wipe out
my Win2k partition will it?

/boot/map is every time, you call "lilo" new generated.

If you open two (or more) files at once "e.g. vim file1 file2", you can
then page through them forward and backwards with :n and :N respectively.

You could look into the ntp packages. It allows you to sync your machine to an
accurate clock across the network. There might be problems with such a huge
change, but it probably could be overridden.

The 35/70 means 35 uncompressed Gigs, 70 with compression. If you're trying to
backup MP3s, Jpegs and other compressed data you will be able to fit only 35GB
worth. If you're backing up regular files such as text, etc., then you'll get
closer to the 70 GB.

The 2.2.16 kernel doesn't even support on-board UDMA-66 IDE controllers,
let alone UDMA-5 controllers, at least using DMA. Set up PIO-4 and no DMA
in your BIOS long enough to get the 2.4.3 kernel downloaded, built and
installed. Then switch BIOS back to AUTO or UDMA.
