Don't know about RH-7.1, I run SuSE-7.1 on it with XFree-4.02 and it
works like a charm. If you run into trouble, I'll be glad to share

I want to more completely automate access to a multiuser system. One
of the things I want to do is setup new user accounts so the user
has to change their password on thier first login. I cannot seem to
figure out a way to do this. I have played around with expiring
the initial password I assign (randomly generated...I don't even know
what it is), but I am not getting the mojo on that working.

Thanks for any help.

Check out http://www.nvidia.com/Products/Drivers.nsf/Linux.html
Apart from the drivers, you find there a README and installation guide.
As far as I can see, the latest NVIDIA release is from March 15 and is for
kernel 2.2.x series, e.g. Mandrake 7.2 with X 4.0.1
There are also X 4.0.2 version suppoort files for SuSE linux.

I am using 2 different NVIDIA cards on 2 computers with Mandrake 7.2,
X4.0.1 and they work fine, fast, full OpenGL acceleration. Mandrake 8 is
very new and uses kernel 2.4.3 which is very different from 2.2.x
So, you'll need a different kernel driver for it - which is not yet released.

BTW: in general, I would not suggest jumping on X.0 OS releases
particularly not from RedHat or Mandrake - they are famous for releasing
very experimental half-cooked and therefore rather buggy code. Wait for
some bug-fix releases, X.1 and X.2 tends to be lot more stable...
At least that was the case for 6.x and 7.x releases.

Please post in plain text only.

The install completed. (But somehow installing lilo fails)
Just put a CD in and enter : "linux rescue root=/dev/hda3"

Now you should get in the linux system. Run /sbin/lilo from the
command line, and see why if it still fails. (check your lilo.conf first)

You can do a passwd -f <userid> This forces them to change it.

RH 6.1 has decided that kppp should be autheticated using PAM instead of
suid-ed root.
The easiest way to beat this is to replace the following line
inside your /etc/pam.d/kppp from:
    #auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_rootok.so
to
    auth  sufficient /lib/security/pam_permit.so

What partions etc do I need to install mandrake 8.0 on same disk as
windows98. I also want to use PQ Boot magic ( just fancy trying it). Do i
need to have a boot partion in the 1024 cylinder limit?? I`ve already
partioned my disk of ready, split as below:-

1.8 GB win C: primary
2.8 GB win D: logical
1.3 GB ext2 linux  (root)
1.4 GB ext2 linux  (home)
0.2 GB ext2 swap
1.0 GB win E: logical

Looks abit messy now that I look at it but I do remember something about
linux /boot having to be near the beginning of the drive , has this changed
now so you can partion what you like.

Yes.

And after doing that, use dd *from the boot sector of hda2* to do the

Hi Eric

Thanks for answering, however that does not help. When I type that, the
installation program starts again, I have to choose keyboard language. Then
it goes on and I get a blue screen with the text on black at beneath saying:

"Running anaconda - please wait..."

and then nothing happens, it just waits with blinking cursor.

Any ideas ?

I hope this is in plain text only.

Subject: Pinging intranet machines

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

        Yesterday I posted a message asking for help on a "ping" problem
with my intranet machines. I now post again but with the information
more understandable.
        What I have is:

        Computer A - Windows ME - 192.168.123.1
        Computer B - Windows 98 - 192.168.123.3
        Computer C - Red Hat Linux 6.2 - 192.168.123.12
        Router/Hub - SMC Barricade - 192.168.123.254
        Modem ADSL - Alcatel SpeedTouch Home - 192.168.123.253

        Netmask in all - 255.255.255.0
        Gateway - 192.168.123.254

        Pinging every machine I get the following results:

        A -> A = Yes
        A -> B = No
        A -> C = No
        A -> Router = No
        A -> Internet = Yes

        B -> A = Yes
        B -> B = Yes
        B -> C = Yes
        B -> Router = yes
        B -> Internet = Yes

        C -> A = No
        C -> B = Yes
        C -> C = Yes
        C -> Router = Yes
        C -> Internet = Yes

        Every computer is connected to the router that is connected to
the modem.
        What might be the problem? The results from computer A are the
most strange as I can ping any machine in Internet but can't ping my
Intranet.
        Shutting down the machines and router doesn't solve problem.
        I don't know what else to do.
        Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm installing Mandrake 8 for a second time (this time w/o KDE/Gnome & with

last time, but now when I try to use any sounds I get the message
"/dev/audio is busy". Know how I might go about troubleshooting this
problem?

One idea I had is maybe there are multiple sound programs being called
during bootup & they are conflicting or not releasing the device for use.
Know how I might check what's being started at bootup & how I can change
that?

Ah yes. I had the same problem when trying to run kisdn.
Simply fixed by symlinking what *is* there:

$ rm libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3
$ ln -s /usr/lib/libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3

It works fine for me.

FYI

It looks as though your Windows ME machine is having some troubles.
(Frankly, I am seriously UNDERWHELMED with Windoz ME).

I have a Barricade with a RH 7.0 and a Win98 machines with no problems.=

Are you running any "Firewall software", such as ZoneAlarm, which will
block ports/services (including ping). I do not know what built-in
blocking ME may have.

Trying swapping the connector between the ME and another device to insur=
e
you do not have a port problem (unlikely).

You may want to enable the DHCP server and let it do the IP assignments.=

If you do, make sure to remove all your TCP/IP settings, including the=20=

gateway entries.

Val, mlutz3: I decided to try reiser/fs as my /usr partition on one machine.
Considering that's where the majority of the load is on that computer, I
figured it would either make it or break it. So far, its made it. Now, am
I willing to jump off the deepend and convert all my machines to reiser/fs?
The simple answer is "no". While I haven't had anything major go wrong yet,
I also haven't really stress tested it yet... I've from people who have, who
now swear by it, but their root partitions are still e2/fs. Besides, until
I can prove to myself that it will solve more headaches then it will solve,
I'm not going to try it on a production machine.

Subject: Shell programming-- passing * to remote machine?
Date: 27 Apr 2001 18:28:08 GMT

I have a script which carries out commands on a number of remote
machines. It contains a line like

ssh remotename $1 $2 $3 $4 $5

I now want to pass a * for globbing by the remote shell and cannot
figure out how to do it.

Let me say the command is doall

Clearly
doall ls *
does not work, since the globbing is done on this command line on the
local machine. Similarly doall ls '*' does not work. as this appears to
get globbed at this end inside the shell command
ssh remotename ls *
(since the quotes are removed.)
doall ls "'*'" also does not work, as I get
ls: *: No such file or directory
 Ie, the * does seem to get passed to the remote
machine but then is not globbed on that remote machine.

If on the other hand I directly do
ssh ls '*'
on the command line, I do get the list globbed on the remote end.

Does anyone understand what is going on here?

Thanks

How do I get this to work?

modprobe:modprobe:Can't locate module net-pf-1

As I understand this problem involves kmod and setting unix socket as a
module, but I made it as a built-in. Besides I removed lines starting
kerneld from the /etc/rc.d/rc.S and rc.modules. Also run depmod -ae
2.3.4

Thanks for the advice. I had a look around and decided that the problem
was little beyond me so I decided to reinstall (keeping the /home)
parition. However the installer keeps crashing when it tries to format /
filesystem. I suspect there may be a back block on the partition.

I'm using the Disc Doctor option in the RH7.0 installer and I tell it to
check for bad blocks. Is there any utilities where I can format the
partition before installation that will also fix back sectors corrects?

Cheers,
