Subject: mount < 2.10r conflicts with kernel-2.2.19-6.2.1 ?!
Date: 5 May 2001 19:01:06 GMT

Hello,

I'm trying to update my system from kernel-2.2.16-3 to 2.2.19-6.2.1
and when I try to install the kernel packages with "rpm -Uvh kernel*..."
I get the error:
mount < 2.10r conflicts with kernel-2.2.19-6.2.1
nfs-utils < 0.3.1 conflicts with kernel-2.2.19-6.2.1

I can't seem to find any updates for mount greater than 2.10r which
appears to be the original RedHat 6.2 release and the same goes with
the nfs-utils package.

Do I have to update the kernel to 2.2.17 before I can go to 2.2.19 or
is there something else going on here?

Any help would be much appreciated.

TIA,

Hi all,

When I boot up I have been su to root then typing:

      mount -t ntfs /dev/hda5 /mnt/d -o ro,uid=500,gid=500

So I don't have to type this every time I would like to just have this
automount on boot up?

I have seen the sintax for fat32, fat16 and other but how do I rig it up
for ntfs?

I'm trying to install Red Hat Linux on a partition past the 1024 cylinder.
>From what I understand LILO must be installed either:

1. In the first 1024 block of the HDD
2. In the first ~8GB of the HDD if the BIOS can abstract disk sectors for
LILO

Is this correct? I'm trying to install LILO entirely within a partition
beginning around the 13th GB. Am I going to have to create a small
partition for /boot? I don't want to shift my partitions around with
Partition Magic. Any comments are appreciated.

Check the redhat update mirrors (rpmfind is a fast one), they have the
updated packages mount-2.10r, and nfs-util-0.3.1 for RedHat 6.2. The
original 6.2 release has mount 2.10f not 2.10r.

Put the following line in /etc/fstab:

/dev/hda5 /mnt/d ntfs ro,uid=500,gid=500 0 0

This should do what you want.

With hda1 (you primary Win2K device) formatted as NTFS you will need to use
the NT boot loader and then configure it to load Lilo. Looks like you've
overwritten the MBR when configuring lilo.

Linux will let you read but not modify an NFTS partition.

If you choose to run Win2K on FAT32 then none of this is an issue and you
can use lilo as the only boot loader and read/modify your 'NT' files.

You don't require any X to run Linux

Hey all you Linux peoples...
I have been trying to install Linux PPC on my G4 450,128ram box...

I have partitioned the drives exactly how the instructions said:

/ (root)
swap
/home
/boot

And i setup a fifth partition to boot the installation of linuxPPC...

I got to the installer and i mounted ONLY ROOT (was that where i
went wrong?)
Then i selected the packages and some of them installed, and some
didn't: it gave me an error message saying that "NAME OF PACKAGE
could not be installed. Continue?" I pressed continue and went
along my merry way...then i set a password and all the network
settings. and rebooted. I got to the boot up screen and the linux
booting screen comes up and goes to 14%....then it stopped and gave
me an error.......

could anyone give me some insight into this matter????

Thanks alot and send responses to:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

thanks again...

P.S. please excuse my stupidity on this matter...i am just beginning to
join the linux revolution!

1024 cylinders *is* around 8GB.

Yes, you will need to create a small linux /boot partition that is
completely under 1024 cylinders. Then create your other partitions as
normal.

If you can grab an updated version of LILO you won't have the 1024
cylinder limit. I believe versions above 21.3 are capable of doing this.
I'm not sure of the procedure you would follow though. Maybe try to get
away with not doing anything with LILO. Then use Windows to download a
newer version, then use a rescue disk to get into Linux (since you
couldn't directly boot to it w/o LILO). Install the new LILO then and hope it
works.

I don't know where you are adding that line so I can't say whether you
need it or not.

But it looks like your problem is that your /boot partition is beyond
1024 cylinders of your drive. 1024 cylinders usually translates to about
8 gigs and based on your map above your /boot is past 10 gigs.

You will need to move the /boot partition closer to the beginning of the
drive, under 1024 cylinders. This will allow LILO to access your boot
images and you won't need to use a floppy disk.

As another idea you can download the newest version of LILO and try to
get away with not having to resize your partitions. You will just neeed
to have a rescue disk to get acess to Linux so you can install the new
LILO. Newer versions of LILO can find boot images beyodn 1024 cylinders.

I manage to get access to virtual consoles 1, 3,4 and 5 with the

You might like to take a look at the NET-HOWTO which is located at
http://www.linuxdoc.org. You may also need a later drive than the one that
was shipped with your system. You might find the site:
http://www.scyld.com/network of some value to you as well.

You may want to be careful with that. You do not want to overheat any
components to the point of causing failure where there was none
before. Likewise, if you chill some components too quickly, you can
damage them as well.

When I used to test hardware to meet military environmental
specifications (MIL-E-5400 was the one I used the most, but that was
about 3 to 4 decades ago), we tested things from -55C to +85C, and a
lot of severe vibration testing too. But we were only supposed to
change the temperature a certain number of degrees per hour except for
the temperature shock test (where we pumped liquid carbon dioxide into
the test chamber to suddenly reduce the temperature from +85C to
-55C). You do not really want to temperature shock your machine.

I suggest you read the specification for your machine and do not
exceed those limits. This may not be enough to accelerate some
problems, but the idea is to detect an existing problem, not to cause
new ones.

I notice that one memory test program (memtest86) deliberately reduces
the refresh rate on the memory in order to increase the chances for
failure. This kind of thing would not damage the memory, but should
certainly increase the likelihood of noticing marginal memory. Since
you are not likely to have an environmental test chamber around the
house, I am not sure how to go about changing the temperature of
modern components without risking causing new problems. I guess I
would keep the hair dryer at least 24 inches away from the item under
test. The trouble with this is that it will be difficult to identify
the problem component this way.

Likewise, do not actually allow the freezing spray (typically Freon in
the old days) to actually touch anything.

All wrong. LILO must beinstalled in the MBR (to be able to boot the
system) or in the first sector of the partiition on which linux will
boot if you intend to use a 3rd party loader. HOWEVER the partition
holding the boot components for linux must reside below the 1023rd
cylinder of the disk.
