Subject: Setup problem with CD
Date: Fri, 05 Jan 2001 19:13:21 GMT
Hi,
I have a 486 running DOS/Windows 3.11 with a Sony CDU33A-1 CD (which came
with a Soundblaster) - everything works well (including the CD.
Now I want to rplace DOS/Windows with Linux. But the Linux install program
does not list my CD (closest is Sony CDU31A), and autoprobe fails to detect
anything either.
So, which driver from the install programs list should I try (I've tried
them all with autoprobe), and what are the manual settings I should add (I
know the address and Ive tried every IRQ).
Or would it be much simpler to buy another CD drive? If so which kind?
Thanks for any help
PS Im trying to load Mandrake 7.0 currently. I tried Red Hat about six
months ago and gave up, since it also could not 'see' the CD.

hello,
assume we have linux running on a server and we are connecting to it using a
terminal
emulator from a windows client to run programs, assume again that our
windows pc
is old and very flaky (freezes a lot etc. bad ram etc.) how will this affect
the data on the linux box since we are running a time sharing system and all
we are doing is connecting to the box and sending screen and keyboard
emulations, while the actual processes are being run on the linux server.
thank you,

Hello
I have SB Live on Asus A7V (VIA KT-133 chipset ) motherboard.
Red Hat 7.0 displays error "device or resource busy" every time I try to
load emu10k1 module.
I have found following answer in homepage of Creative Labs:
> Q.A2- I get a "device or resource busy" error when loading the driver
> This is a know bug with ABIT B6 + HPT366 controller motherboards.
> You must not use the `pci=reverse' kernel option.

But I haven't found any `pci=reverse' option in lilo.conf or somewhere
else.
I don't know how to change that option.
Could you give me some advice, please ?
thanx

Subject: Re: DVD on Redhat 7.0
well, maybe i dont pay attention enough to my own installation
procedures but i dont recall ever hearing/reading that a configure
script has to be in each subdirectory. If there are subdirectories that
each have files in them that need compiled a certain way then the
configure script will create the appropriate Makefile for each of those
directories, or the Makefile will already be present in each one, I
forget exactly which way it happens.
I really doubt u need a configure script for each subdirectory. I know
i've compiled programs with multiple subdirectories where the source
files exist (ALSA being one of them) and i've never had to run
./configure in each of those subdirectories.
i assume there is only a master configure script for Livid in the main
directory. Have you ran that one yet and if so what happened? If u
havent ran it yet, why not?
i'll await your reply.

I'd say get rid of the proprietary cdrom drive and get a generic 24x or
48x cdrom for like $30 or so. It will be recognized using a general IDE
cdrom driver that even DVD drives can use. It will also be faster than
your current drive with less headaches.

I solved my own problem. I saw on another disucussion forum (UKLUG I
think) that someone has update their Helix (Gnome) dist. with the
automatic installer and upon rebooting received the same messages I did.
The effect of the update modifed /dev/null to be a regular file with
some sort of message in it ... hence "Bad file descriptor".
So the following three commands I ran in maintainance mode:
> mount -n -o remount,rw /
> rm -f /dev/null
> mknod -m 666 /dev/null c 1 3
The "mount ..." command allows you to actually do something on the "/"
filesystem because it will probably be in read-only mode. You then have
to remove null so that you can remake the node.

Thanks for the reply. Out of urgency I ended up opting for a full re-
installation.
For anyone who's interested this is the email I finally got back from
Redhat, not all that helpful...
===========
The resolution is:
Did you turn off the system without shutting it down properly? Or have
a power outage? Is the root Harddrive possibly specified wrong in
/etc/fstab? Is this the first boot or is this a previously
installed/configured system?
My best advice is first: backup if possible. (it may be too late for
that, depending on how serious the error is)Second, try the
command "fsck -Aa" as this should attempt to repair all errors
automatically on all file systems. Please note that this may not repair
everything (dpeending on the extent of the damage). My suggestion would
be to attempt a backup after this, and recover what you can after a
reinstall. (even if nothing seems to be broken, I would be prepared to
reinstall just in case something not-obvious was broken). If this does
not help any, the only choice I can give you is to reinstall, as the
damage is more extensive then I can help you with at this level.

Subject: Linux Terminal Problem ???
Date: Fri, 05 Jan 2001 20:11:00 GMT
Hi,
I am running Red Hat Linux 6.2 (Zoot), kernel version number 2.2.16-3.
The system had been stable for several months. Ran without complaint.
I have the machine setup for text-based login.
I left it on over Christmas and went on a 2 week vacation. When i
returned, I had no video and so had to reset the machine.
Upon rebooting, I discovered that I was unable to log-on.
The machine boots up properly and prompts me to log-in.
When I enter the username and hit return, the screen refreshes and
again prompts me for username.
So I am never prompted for the password and therefore can never log-in.
I am at my wit's end. Have tried using Ctrl-M and Ctrl-J [keyed
equivalents of carriage return and line feed] as well as the Enter
[numeric keypad] and Return.
Still, I can never get a prompt for the password. THe screen refreshes
and again asks for the username.
Incidentally, on a related note,I was formerly able to use the Alt-1,
Alt-2, and Alt-# keystrokes to open new text-based consoles.
However, I can no longer do this, either...
Can someone diagnose these symptoms?
Neither an upgrade install from CD nor a floppy boot disk can rectify
the problem....
A fresh install is out of the question as I must preserve the data on
existing user accounts.

Does anyone have a SoundBlaster 16 card setup which correctly
plays music CDs? By "correctly" I mean that both L/R
channels are active.
If so, what version of ALSA and kernel are you running?
Also, what is your ALSA setup?
What does 'alsactl -f example store' store into "example"
What does 'amixer gcontents' report?
Thanks....

There is a utility called DELPART - search for it on any web search engine.
This will delete any partition information from the disk and allow you to
start from scratch again.
I have seen fdisk get into the situation where it offers to display logical
drives then denies that there are any present.
Please use this utility with care however - it takes no prisoners.

Hi,
my system is a debian2.2r2 (i386) with software raid (level 0,1). I'm using
a 2.2.16 kernel (raid patches) - no problems. Today I compiled a 2.4.0
kernel with the same options. If I try to boot the kernel it fails:
on boot prompt:
fsck.ext2 : no such file on directory while trying to open /dev/md0 (null)
superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem
Why can kernel 2.2.16 mount the / (/dev/md0) and the 2.4.0 kernel doesn't?
cfdsik can read the partition tables of devices which build the raid system.
please help!

that driver history is something else ... When I look in

I also tried this one, but I always get a "can't load module bla bla

if this is an ide burner, you need to load the scsi emulation module
(ide-scsi)
insmod ide-scsi
i haven't figured out how to put this into /etc/conf.modules yet
if it is scsi, i have no idea what is wrong

I agree, Mandrake is totally useless. In Red Hat you have always been given
a CHOICE to boot from the MBR or a bootdisk during install. I don't like
Mandrakes install program because it tries to configure everything
including your kitchen sink during install while at the same time taking
control away from the end-user. It confuses most first time users...and is
a waste of time, like WindowsNT...yikes. It takes half a day to install
WindowsNT and you still end up with drivers failing (like my Espson printer
driver), which works fine under Red Hat 7 but always fails under WindowsNT
even with the updated driver. In fact I didn't even have to install a
driver in Red Hat 7, it just freakin' worked. And although some people
gripe at Red Hat for every little thing they do, at least they put together
a distro that works and has a very simple and fast install process. I also
tried out Mandrake 7.2 but have now gone back to using trusty old Red Hat
which puts me in control and has never let me down. You would think that
Mandrake would have learned from M$ mistakes...I guess some people never
learn.

Subject: Accessing Windoze Printer

I would like to access my Windoze Printer (Canon BJC-250) from a Debian 2.2
machine. How can I do this? Printer is connected to a Win98 machine which
is also the gateway to the world. I am able to share the printer with other
windoze boxes using NetBUEI (File/Print sharing only bound to NetBUEI).
How do I do this? I don't mind RTFMing but I am not sure which FM to R.
Thanks,
