take a look at /etc/rc.local.

not only that, but Justin Gibbs' new aic7xxx driver is several revisions
ahead of what's made it into the stock 2.4.4 kernel. You should get the
patch for your kernel source from
http://people.FreeBSD.org/~gibbs/linux/

Rein
I had a similar problem. Mine would start the gui wizard then crap out 4 or
5 screens into the install.
It turned out the the ISO I downloded did not complete, hence bad image. I
downloaded it again it it was fine.

You should do a MD5 check on the image after you download it.

If you are on a Win32 system you can find MD5 software on the net (it comes
with most, if not all, linux distros)

I solved the icon problem by upgrading koffice. I hoped this would help
with the kmail problem but no luck.

Kmail crashes with 'signal 11'. Any advice?

Mike, I've a few comments that might be helpful to you.

One, laptops generally use proprietary hardware, and they have a very poor
reputation for adhering to standards of industry. Linux relies on the
standards (in general) to make things work, 'cuz you can only get the
normal information, manufactueres hide their proprietary information, in
general.

Result is, windows works fine on laptops only because the manufacturer
tested windows on it, but Linux often still has problems. Each problem can
usually be overcome. I wouldn't go so far as to say "Mandrake not for
laptops." I also wouldn't say "linux not for laptops." ...

Instead, I would say "some manufacturers don't fully support linux yet on
certain models of laptop." In fact, I'm writing this message to you from a
laptop running Mandrake 8.0

Finally, my suggestion --
Your best bet is to find information posted by people who have installed
linux on the same model laptop that you have. A very good reference is
http://www.linux-laptop.net

If you don't see your laptop there, or can't answer your questions there,
you will either give up on using linux on that laptop, or you will wait
until somebody else figures it out, or you will go through a very painful
process of trying to make it run, which may or may not be futile.

For most laptops, you'll find it's already been done, and you'll find your
answers there.

If this does not work, run Xconfigurator in a terminal window and only pick
ONE screen size. I had the same prob and this fixed it. Very strange...

Hi All;

I hope some one can help me :< I have redhat 6.2 server installed.

I have tried to use gcc to write some programs in C. I managed to get
a simple hello world program to compile and run. But its giving me
problems with "external"(?) headers.

ie;

Tried to compile testlibpq.cc from the postgresql docs.

Gcc gives the following error;

testlibpq.cc:8:libpq-fe.h No such file or directory

When I change testlibpq.cc with;

#include "/usr/include/pgsql/libpq-fe.h"

Gcc produces;

testlibpq.cc:In function 'int main()':
testlibpq.cc:98:'IT' undeclared (first use this function)
testlibpq.cc:98:(each undeclared identifier is reported only once
testlibpq.cc:98:for each function it apppears in.)
testlibpq.cc:98:prase error before ';'
testlibpq.cc:103:confused by earlier errors, bailing out

My .bash_profile has the lines

PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:/usr/include/:/usr/include/pqsql/

export PATH

I don't think so. I think you are just seeing messages from X in the
console you ran startx from. There are typically 6 virtual terminals and
X runs in #7. When you log out of X you should end up back in the vt you
started it from, still logged in. If you use Ctrl-Alt-F# from X to go to
one of the 6 consoles, you can get back to X with Alt-F7. But you cannot
do anything in the one you ran startx from until you exit X.

So it sounds like he needs the new one. I would hope that Redhat 7.1

I also encountered this problem. Go to the RedHat web site and
see Bugzilla bug report number 37812. The problem definitely
is from the kernel module yenta_socket. The point you raise
about stopping pcmcia turns out to be confusing. If you
never start pcmcia, the Texas Instruments pcmcia controller
will not be using irq 12. But once you start it, even if
you stop it afterwards, it keeps the interrupt at the hardware
level. To see that, try lspci -vv both before and after running
pcmcia.

We managed to come up with two workarounds. The one I prefer
is to pass the following to the kernel
pci=irqmask=0xafff
You can do this at the lilo prompt with
linux pci=irqmask=0xafff
or you can add to the linux image section in /etc/lilo.conf
append="pci=irqmask=0xafff"
and then rerun lilo.

What this does is exclude irqs 12 and 14 from the list of irqs
that pci devices can use. Then when you run pcmcia, it will
take irq 15.

In the bugzilla discussion there is also another method which
requires changing the penalties for different irqs in
a certain file in the kernel source and then making a new
kernel or perhaps just new modules, I'm not sure which.

This problem, by the way, does not arise in Windows 98,
nor did it in RH 5.1 through 7.0. The difference for the
RH7.1 is that the code was rewritten to incorporate the support
in the kernel whereas previous it was standalone.
