Q T;
When the machine boots up, go into the SCSI setup (control A keys) and set
the cd rom's SCSI ID to be the bootable device (4 or 5, depending on your
setup). Once you do this, the Red Hat 7 CD will boot as if it's the A:
drive. Red Hat 7 will load the correct SCSI Controller driver and continue.

The first challenge will be working out whether or not your SCSI adapter is
supported by Linux. If it is, then you might have to boot the installation
from a floppy disk and enter the text method of installing redhat. You will
then need to enter the advanced method of installing Linux (it is one of the
options from the install script from memory). From there you should be able
to specify which adapter you want to load. I know that I had to get my SCSI
controller identified through this approach, it didn't just happen
automatically.
You might like to check out the HARDWARE-HOWTO at http://www.linuxdoc.org and
see whether the hardware is supported.
See ya

I have Compaq ML530 and a Compaq SCSI 20/40 GB autoloader.
How can I use the autoloader?
Do I need to use the driver for the autoloader?
The CD accompanied with the autoloader does not contain driver for Linux.
I also can't find the driver over the Internet.
Or I can use it without a driver?

That looks like an ssh2 message (DSA). If that is the host you are trying
to connect to, and it asks you if you want to add it to your authorized
hosts, say 'yes' (you have to spell it out, just 'y' will not work).

That's right; you have to SIGHUP syslogd to get it to close the old log
(it's still writing to it, even if you've deleted/renamed the directory
entry), and open the new log.

Subject: Partion problems....
Date: Thu, 24 May 2001 18:31:44 +1200
Hi,
I turned my PC on today and can't seem to get it to boot into Linux........
I have two harddrives, what is usually /dev/hda has Windows and what is
usually /dev/hdb has Linux related stuff.
The problem is as I said, today I can't boot into Linux. I'm using the
Redhat 7.1 distro and it gets up to the stage where it about to go through
the interactive init process (i.e. not far into the boot process).
However instead of getting anything "normal" I get a whole lot of messages
saying "dup2: bad file descriptor"....
I then get a prompt saying to enter the root password to recover the
system.......
Well, I can't seem to find much wrong..... and in fact my Windows
installation can still access/copy the Linux drive 100% fine (using
explore2fs of course).
The only strange thing I can find is the following (appoligies for the ugly
table that follows). This is the output of fdisk on /dev/hdb......
Device Boot Start End Type
/dev/hdb1 * 1 3 83
/dev/hdb2 4 4865 5
/dev/hdb5 4 4720 83
/dev/hdb6 4721 4753 82
/dev/hdb7 4754 4865 7
In my configuration
/dev/hdb1 is mounted as /boot
/dev/hdb5 is mounted as /
/dev/hdb6 is my Linux Swap drive
/dev/hdb7 is a NTFS formatted partion.
This is a 40Gb harddrive.
The "strange thing is /dev/hdb2" - I don't recall placing a FAT32 partion on
this drive, and if my knowledege is correct this output is indicating that
it occupies the same space as /dev/hdb5...........
Am I interpreting this correctly? If so any ideas on how I can go about to
fix it, or am I on a totally incorrect path????
As I said the data integrety seems to be ok, since entering rescue mode
means I can navigate the filesystem and cat files etc like I normally would,
and explore2fs under Windows is able to copy the contents of the filesystem
onto another drive, without problems.... All the files still seem to have
the proper contents etc....
Any ideas on how I could go about attempting to fix this one?
Is it normal for two partitions to have the same starting block address? If
not can I safely remove the entry for /dev/hdb2, and if so how?
Thanks,
Christopher Fairbairn.

Alright, I created a new partition using PartitionMagic. I then went back
into Linux and formatted it with mkfs to be a reiserfs like my main
partition. I then mounted it. Non-root users get read only access, no
matter what mount settings I try. Root can write to it fine. I can't seem
to find this problem ever addressed. Does anyone know what mount settings
to use or what else I am doing wrong?

Subject: Strange Question..

I was just wondering, if anyone can help me.
I have a PAS-16 Sound Card with the SCSI connector and I want to add a 9.1GB
SCSI Hard Drive.
My question is simple, can I do it? Is it possible or should I forget it
before I even make the purchase. And the other follow up question is does
anyone know if I can add a SCSI-2 or a SCSI-Fast drive? And finally how
could I find out what 50 Pin SCSI devices or MAX hard drive size or SCSI
types could I get for it. I don't have the book anymore and I can't find
anything that can help me on the net.
I turned to this newsgroup because I will be using it on a linux machine.
(Debian stable)
Well in any case... I hope someone can get back to me with some information.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: USB ISDN modem help
Date: Thu, 24 May 2001 09:08:34 +0200
I have a version of a Draytek miniVigor128 USB ISDN "modem." The Draytek
site has a driver for it in the form of an rpm. I got the rpm to install,
but when I try to load the driver (lib/modules/draytek/m128) using
insmod -f,
I get a message that it was compiled for kernel 2.4.0 and I am running
2.4.3-20mdksmp (which is right). Yet the driver shows up in
proc/bus/usb/drivers, with the name "miniVigor," and the modem is listed in
proc/bus/usb/devices, though with "driver=(none)" next to it.
When I follow Draytek's instructions, which say to create a symbolic link
from dev/ttyUSB0 to dev/modem, the K dialer can't query the modem (message:
"Sorry, can't open modem").
Any ideas? Could something be in the wrong place?
I've also tried loading the ACM driver and accessing the modem through
ttyACM0, but that won't work either.
My system is running dual PII 400s, with Mandrake8, kernel
2.4.3-20mdksmp.
Thanks wholeheartedly for any help!

If you say 'yes', it will be added to your ~/.ssh/known_hosts, this way
you will
get a warning case the remote host key changes, which indicates, that
there is something going on/wrong.
authorized_keys is used for RSA based authentication.
"man ssh" for more info.

Hi,
I have a strange problem with setserial..
I have an internal modem card on COM4, which is NOT identified by
setserial (I've never had this problem before)
SO, to get around this, in my rc.local file, I've placed
/sbin/setserial /dev/ttyS3 uart 16550a port 0x02e8 irq 3
However, this doesn't seem to work either!!
The only way to get it to function is to manually issue this
setserial line from the root command line, then all is OK..
How can it NOT work in rc.local ?????

Now that my Linux server is up and running, I've started trying

Since I bought my Linux server really cheap, I'm going for a really
cheap X Server (MicroImages), which appears to support XDM protocol.
I've edited my /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess but to no avail. Just to cover
my bases - Does GDM use the XDM protocol? (I hope the answer is yes.)
As I was referring to my system files when writing this message, I
noticed that the /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf file has an [xdmcp] section
with the item "enable=0". Am I getting warm?
