Yes, SAMBA. Go to www.samba.org. You can share Linux directories out to NT
boxes or vice versa.

SAMBA may help you here too, don't know though.

Thanks for the idea, Marco - unfortunately, that didn't solve the problem
for me. Even after disabling APM altogether (and USB too), the PC still
hangs once it gets to "Restarting System."

I'm willing to accept that there might be any number of processes or kernel
features that could cause this problem - can you (or anyone) give me an idea
of how I might start narrowing down what the problem is? (Like, for
example, is there a way to have the shutdown process write everything it's
doing out to a debug file, so I can look at the file later to see what the
last thing it said was before it crashed?)

> Try it with 2.4.4, but try the newly released 2.4.5

Hmm - well, I might give that a shot too.

I wanted to quit dual booting, since I now have a dedicated Linux server
on my LAN, and I needed the HD for a test installation of W2K. So I
blew off my linux partition on the machine.

After I started the W2K install, when it rebooted from the hard disk,
LILO started like this:

LI

Now what do I do? I can't boot into my 98 installation, and I can't
continue with the W2K installation, because deleting my Linux drive has
apparently munged my LILO situation. Is there some way to fix it
without a complete reinstallation of Linux, and if not, how do I fix it
after I reinstall Linux?

Why do you keep saying that? The fact is that it does work, most of the
time, under NT4/NTFS4, so as long as your backups are kept current (as
they, of course, should be), what's the big deal?

Anyway, isn't the real issue here that, as of about NT4/SP4, the NTFS is
encrypted (and thus probably not accessible at all from non-Microsoft OS's) ?

(For the nit-pickers, note that the encryption is an option, probably
not on by default - so I assume the point is that you can only read
unencrypted partitions)

Boot with your 98 boot or rescue disk, and run "fdisk /mbr". Lilo takes
over the Master Boot Record, and even when you remove the system, you
still need to fix the MBR.

Good Luck.

The following is how I print Text File through SmabaClient :

% smbclient \\\\192.168.0.22\\HPLJ6L mypassword -U eric -P
smb: \> print test.txt
smb: \>

As the above commands, I can print a text file to a Windows Shared Printer

But how I can print a PostScript(.ps) file in the Samba Prompr "smb: \>" ?

Would you please to teach me ?

Well, sort of...

I did try "linux mem=238M@16", and this gets me all the way trough
installation - almost!

Very late in the process, after many packages have been copied, the
installation program crashes after a "Signal 11" (or perhaps this is only a
secondary error)

I've tried to make the described driver disk (by adding the "dd"
parameter). The NCR 53c8xx driver did load and the same thing (late crash)
happened again.

The PC *is* a strange box: It has an embedded 53c835 on the mainboard and
it has a Compaq Smart-2/P PCI Raid controller in slot 6.

I've been told that RH 6.1 with a kernel patch from Compaq may be the right
way to get the thing up and running. This page has more info:

If you still have your Red Hat CD, you should be able to restore the

Log in as root
Go to /etc/xinetd.d and change the no on the last line from both "wu-ftpd"
and "telnet" to yes
If you do not know how to restart those things just reboot your machine.

Subject: telnet/sendmail problem on RH7.1, why is everybody so quiet?
Date: Tue, 29 May 2001 05:52:50 GMT

In release 7.x, Redhat moved to a default secure networking mode. This
changed how telnet/sendmail, etc. operate. More specifically,
telnet/sendmail no longer work out of the box and more handling is
required.

I am sure for expert users this change was just fine as they immediately
added the few lines of code that will get everything back in working
order. However for us novice users, this change proved to be a major
headache. I am in no way down-playing the significance of having a
secure workstation. My problem is that no matter where I search, I can't
find a decent document (preferably released by RedHat for the benefit of
novice users in the community) that explains how to make this transition
happen.
Right now, I have a Redhat 7.1 with broken sendmail/telnet. I keep
searching the net and I read about xinetd/telnet (none on my machine),
ssh, etc. etc. But no clear step by step instruction on how to get this
to work.

In summary, I would like to bring this problem to the attention of any
RedHat people, and beg for any of you experts to post a step by step
instruction on how to get passed this issue.

Any replies is appreciated in advance.

SI

I am having issues installing a 3Com 3csoho100-TX OfficeConnect in my

for this card and determined that the 3c90x would be my best bet. This
came precompiled with my distro and is located in

my /etc/modules.conf file and tried 'insmod 3c90x.o' from the net dir
prompt. No errors reported by either attempt but no adapters are
listed when I run ifconfig other than loopback. Im not sure if I am
going about this all wrong, missing major steps, or its just a
compatibility issue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

I have an OpenBSD 2.9 server which has /home shared over NFS. Also I
have a RedHat 7.1 linux with kernel 2.4.5, which mounts /home from the
OpenBSD box.

This is fine most of the time. Everything seems to work until I start my
mail program (pine). It tries to do file locking on my mailboxes, but
that does not work. It takes around 100 seconds to open a mailbox...

I have tried forcing NFS version 2 and 3, specifying tcp or udp, posix
or not, nothing seems to help.

Disabling file locking (nolock), do seem to work, but then my mailboxes
cannot be locked - and I would like them to be, so procmail does not
mess with an open unlocked mailbox...

I have tried to mess with the OpenBSD NFS server, but there does not
seem to be anything related to mess with (and I know this part is
off-topic)...

Anybody know, what I do wrong - or what I miss?

TIA

Check on www.linmodems.org if it is supported. It is probably a

Edit /etc/xinetd.d/telnet and change 'disabled = yes' to 'disabled =
no'. Run 'killall -HUP xinetd'.

Edit /etc/mail/sendmail.mc and change
'DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA')' to

Now telnet and sendmail should work. But why not use ssh instead of

There is no /etc/xinetd.d/telnet on my machine. Do I create this
manually?
Also, I don't use senamil.mc. I manually modify sendmail.cf. I know
using mc file is the right way to go. Is there a way to do this without
using mc file? there is a sendmail.cf in /etc with default installation.
Where is the mc file that was used to create this cf file?

Thanks for your help.
