Subject: No spool file found....

After several days of pouring through information, and visiting web sites,
and trying various noted methods, I've finally have printing enabled -
sort of.

I can now send text straight to the port, and it works. But if I try to
print anything else - the ASCII test page or the Postscript test page from
printtool, or a page of text from AbiWord, etc. - the printer spits out a
page that says, at the top, "No spool file found".

I have to admit, I'm stumped now. Not only can I not figure out why a
spool file is not being created, I can't find any information that would
lead me in the direction of an answer.

Can someone give me a clue?

Thanks-

Glad I could help. One thing I forgot to mention, one that's bitten
me in the past; if you're creating the rc.modules file (and not just
adding to an existing one), remember to give it execute permissions,
or else rc.sysinit will not be able to run it.

When I installed Linux Mandrake 8 with my Sony Laptop PCG-SR17, I always

An error occurred

If I click OK, it keep giving me the same error. I tried to boot from CD,

can I do to install Mandrake 8 in my system successfully?

Doing this - lilo -u - creates a "virgin" HD.

I don't want this to happen.

What I need is to remove LILO and afterwards make the PC to boot into Windows -
coming up with the Windows NT/2000 selection menu.

Is this entirely possible?

I don't know much more than you do, but try the following:

1. run checkpc. It checks the /etc/printcap file and sets up spool
directories if necessary.

2. stop and start the lpd daemon.

It does help alot running it as a daemon, ssh generates site keys each
time it starts, and
that takes time.

Is there a firewall on 131.175.122.54 which might be blocking incoming ypbind
connections. It seems to me that there is something on the server which is
blocking the client from being able to talk to it. If you get a chance, try
to dump the ipchains or iptables rules on the server and see if there are any
entries in there which might be blocking the NIS requests.

See ya

No it doesn't. It restores the sector to what it was the first time you
ran lilo to install the lilo loader into the MBR sector. It won't modify
the partition table, nor will it erase any of the file systems. If you
had a functional boot loader in the MBR sector, that that is what you'll get
back.

Windows writes its own mbr to the disk, overwtriting the lilo one.
Start on a startup diskette or in rescue mode from the installation cd
and run lilo. That will write the startup loader to the mbr.

Alright Jake, surprised to see you here.

Sounds like a cylinder issue with Lilo, I bet if you boot from floppy you'll
be okay.

If you can, try and lay out your disk so that the /boot partition is close
to the start of the disk, likewise your root and swap partitions.

Say "Hi" to Jase for me, try and drag him out for a beer sometime.

Mike,

I'd swear there's a problem in the BIOS/APMD stuff in RH7.1. I keep
seeing problems reported related to this area. ...odd!

Anyway, try shutting off BIOS support for APM. The do your compile, then
turn it (BIOS APM support) back on. That might serve as a "work around."

Hi there,

I have asked question in the groups about partition of a 19G hard drive
and got help from many nice folks. Thanks to all those who helped.

Now I encountered an issue with LILO. I was installing RedHat, at one
point, it hit "Bootloader installation failed" and can't go further with
LILO installation. I wonder what could lead to this failure? Could it be
that my Windoze ME hasn't been installed? I doubt it.

My current partition goes like this:
/boot 15Meg
Windoze ME partition (DOS 16bit>=32M) 9007Meg
and then other partitions for Linux (/home, /usr, /tmp, / ... etc)

Any help is gratefully appreciated,

I'm using an Adaptec 2940 to a WangDAT DDS-2 drive, 4/8GB.
Works like a charm. Bought both on ebay for about $200 ea, for

the controller was used, but only slightly, and the tape drive
was new, or perhaps reconditioned, from a reseller in Texas. I

Hope this helps.

Subject: LILO Problem: /dev/hdh1 is not on first disk
Date: 8 Jun 2001 08:15:06 -0700

I'm trying to install RH 7.1. I have two physical HD's, both
connected to a PROMISE ATA-66 controller. My first HD (which is the
primary drive that boots to Win2k) is hde1. My second HD (which boots
to RH) is hdh1. The HDs are not connected together in any way -- both
are hooked up separately to the Promise card's IDE interface. (There
are two direct interfaces on the Promise card...)

I can install RD without a hitch, up until I get to actually
installing LILO on the system. When LILO installs in post
configuration, I get an error message:

"an error occured while installing bootloader"
"Warning: /dev/hdh1 is not on the first disk!"
"BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible."

Booting into RH using a floppy boot disk, I can edit /etc/lilo.conf to
get rid of the "BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible" by adding
"disk=/dev/hdh bios=0x82". However, I still cannot get rid of the
"Warning: /dev/hdh1 is not on the first disk!" problem, and I cannot
boot directly to RH without the floppy boot disk. I've also tried
adding "disk=/dev/hde bios=0x80", but this doesn't solve the problem
either. I'm using lba32, not linear mode. BTW, LILO does report the
"*Added: linux" message once /sbin/lilo is run.

Here is my parition information:

/dev/hde1 -- Win2k Partition (40 Gig)
/dev/hdh1 -- /boot partition (kernel files) (16 Meg)
/dev/hdh5 -- / partition (12.5 Gig)
/dev/hdh6 -- linux swap (256 Meg)

I've been working on this problem for about a day now, and I'm really
stumped. I can extract LILO's bootloader (using the "dd" command) and
add it to boot.ini in Win2k, but all I get is an "L" when LILO tries
to boot RH. The funny thing is that Mandrake will install LILO
correctly (but only if I set my partitions up using Mandrake's auto
allocate feature) and I am able to boot into Mandrake without a boot
disk (once I've extracted the bootloader and added it to my Win2k
parition, of course). I've noticed that (when I am able to boot
directly into linux), Mandrake automatically sets up its partitions
like this:

/dev/hdh1 -- / partition
/dev/hdh5 -- /home parition
/dev/hdh6 -- linux swap

(There appears to be no /boot parition!)

I tried to set RH's paritions up this way, but RH (via Disk Druid)
insists that /dev/hdh1 is the /boot partition -- it will not install
the / parition here. I dunno if this really helps or not.

Does anyone else out there have a similar configuration in which RH is
working? If so, could you please post your /etc/lilo.conf file so I
can take a look. I'm really at a loss here and would appreciate any
help. I'm thinking about buying Partition Magic and resizing my Win2k
parition (hde1) so that I can install linux on the first drive and
have my second drive as a data drive shared between both OS's. Would
that solve the " /dev/hdh1 is not on the first disk!" error? In this
case, I was thinking about dividing my hde (40 Gig) into 20 Gigs for
each OS. I assume that hde1 would remain Win2k and hde2-?? would
become a linux parition. Would I run into problems if I did it this
way?

I don't have access to my /etc/lilo.conf file right now. If anyone
wants to see it, I can post it. Just let me know. (Although I feel
like I've tried every possible combination in /etc/lilo.conf at this
point!!)

Thanks for any help in advance.

What version of Oracle (8.1.5, 8.1.6, 8.1.7?)

Make sure that you cd to /cdrom/install/linux and run that
runInstaller rather than the runInstall in the cdrom's root directory

Make sure that the cd is not mounted with the noexec option (most
likely cause I think, as permissions seem to be correct on the script)

> > >> >

This might be the wrong runInstaller to execute (see above for
details), it was incorrect on som eralier versions of 8i.

Don't have any problem here. Sure you have selected the correct CPU
and compiled ext2 and ide support into the kernel instead of as
modules? Can't think what else it could be.

you've wayyyy overcomplicated yourself for a laptop install
first, can you put the win2k boot files on a seperate partition..? I'm
running win2k and was unaware of this
now, what I'd do:
20MB /boot partition (trust me, if you get to fiddling with the kernel you
may regret only having 7MB there..)
256MB hibernation
2GB NTFS win2k system
3GB NTFS programs

128MB linux swap
500MB / (root)
remaining 5.35GB split between /usr and /home, personaly I'd do 3GB /usr and
1.35GB /home

note that there's no "FAT32 tmp"
I see absilutely no reason for this, unless you're going to be transferring
files from linux to win2k (which would be a little odd)
so long as you're only transferring from win2k to linux there's no reason
for temporary storage, NTFS5 works just fine in linux for read-only
operation (I play all my MP3's from NTFS5 partitions and run a few things in
WINE from them)
