I want to install Mandrake, but I want to dual boot with Win 2000. How
should I do this? Can I install Linux and dual boot without formatting W2k?

hi
i've got redhat 7.1 up and running on my system p2 350mhz, sis 6326,
256mb, 15" hyndai monitor at a resolution of 1024x768. the problem i'm
having at the moment is the screen flickers when i run the startx. also
some applications have a slow refresh problem, which i beleive is
related.
earlier i had redhat 6.2 and i downloaded (i think) xfree 4.0.3,
installed it and there were no flicker problems. redhat 7.1has 4.0.2.
fortunately, i had the XF86Config file from earlier installation. i
tried that config file to see if it still worked, with the xfree86
tester using
$: XFree86 -xf86config -/rh62/xfconfigfile
it loaded X at the correct resulution. hoping this would solve my
problem i tried startx but got the following error saying some thing
like:
"ServerLayout" secion not recognized
there were some other sections that were not recognized.
i undrerstand that the xfree config file format underwent some changes
for the 4.x series. is this my problem? how could i solve it?
. i'm really at a loss, with the testing facility working but startx not
working.
i have a slow internet connection, so i'd like to avoid downloading the
latest xfree version if i can avoid it.

one thing i forgot to mention,
the old config file had the "sis" driver to support my graphics card, but
my exisiting config file has the "svga" driver, which i believe is a more
generic one. could this be the problem? as i said before, the xfree test
went fine with the "sis" driver in the config file.
thanx

hello
I have an "old" suse 6.4 distr. with kernel V. 2.2.14 installed and
upgraded to xfree86 4.0.2 (which works fine). now i want to install the
DRI but the readme's say you need kernel V. => 2.3 .
is there a way to compile the DRI-module under kernel 2.2.14 ?
or even better - are there pre-compiled DRI modules for 2.2.14 ?
also the docu. says "rage 128 PRO" video cards are not supported by the
DRI (i have a ATI Xpert 2000pro installed). is there a workaround ? will
rage128 pro maybe work with the rage128 driver, but slower?
best regards

Yes you can, AFAIK, you can use the bootloader of win2K to load both
Win and Linux. Some days ago there was another thread on the same
subject, so I suggest you to read the older messages.

Kind of a shot in the dark, but have you tried rearranging the card
order? Put one or both in different slots, try reversing their order, etc.
This might help but it's just a guess really, I'm hardly a PCI bus expert.

I've run into 2GB file limit problem with an ORACLE Backup. The problem was
solved as followed:
you need to create a PIPEFELE:
mknod /dev/exp_p.dmp p (you can call "exp_p.dmp" whatever you like)
We then added the following lines to the export script (This was for the
Oracle Backup, but maybe it can help:
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/exp exporter/exporter file=/dev/exp_p.dmp compress=n
constraints=y
consistent=y grants=y buffer=1024000 full=y log=$EXPLOG &
cat /dev/exp_p.dmp | gzip > $EXPFILE &
This gzips the export on the fly.
Hope that it helps some, let me know and I'll let you know how the import
would work.

And of course, you can use LILO (or grub) in the MBR as primary
bootmanager, too, and W2k's as secondary - it's not much more
than a matter of choice (or "political correctness" <bg> ).

Subject: Problems using RH 7.1 with SiS 530 Graphics Card
Date: 11 Jun 2001 02:01:20 -0700
I'm having trouble getting Red Hat 7.1 (XFree86 v4.0.3-5) to work with
my graphics card - an SiS 530 (8MB shared RAM). It supports up to
1024x768 at 16-bits, but I've not been able to get it to work at any
resolution or bit depth: the screen is corrupted and not legible -
with random black lines and interference flickering accross the
screen.
I know that there is no hardware problem, because it works in Win98.
And previously the card worked fine under Corel Linux and Mandrake
versions 7.0 and 7.1 (which use XFree 86 v3.x). I've tried setting the
card to 4MB and 8MB, tried all supported resolutions and bit depths,
and tried using the "sis" and default drivers. I've been trying to
sort this out for several days now, and would really appreciate some
help.
Would upgrading to XFree86 v4.1.0, or downgrading to v3.3.6, help? If
so, how do I downgrade using the Red Hat RPMs, without reinstalling my
root partition?
cheers,
Chris Nappin.

I just got a new SCSI hard drive, and am having some trouble repartitioning it. I would
like to make it all Linux, with one big extended partition containing a 3GB root
partition, a 3GB opt partition, and a ~2.5GB home partition. Unfortunately, I cannot
get anything to format the hard drive ext2. Partition Magic v6 crashes whenever it
tries repartitioning the drive, fdisk destroys the partition table when it tries
writing,
cfdisk needs a partition to work with, and I have not figured out sfdisk's UI yet.
Can anyone help? Another repartitioning program or some trick with one of the above
would help.

Are you suggesting I might have to recompile my kernel after some file
editing?
I looked at some of the threads, but couldn't come to a conclusion wether it
was wise to play around with the kernel which is what I think was being
suggested.
There is a swapoff command I could use just before shutdown. The handbook that
comes with SuSE 7.0 suggests that you should never assign no swap space at
all, even with machines with 256Mb and over, and even suggest you should never
turn the machine off because of the benefits of the way Linux uses the swap
file
I'm hoping that I will be able to find out why the swap doesn't always turn
off, but in the meantime "swapoff" will put me out of a bit of misery :-)
Thanks,
Ken

try writing the refresh rates of your monitor as comma separated lists in

Well, fix your scsi setup then! Something as basic as that not working
indicates that your scsi system is fouled.
It is usually cabling or termination (lack of). Check the kernel
messages with dmesg.

You could get this by using hdparm with 2.2, I did but there again it was
my job to run servers, and when I moved over to IDE disks from SCSI, I
_had_ to know how to tune them correctly.
Now with 2.4 and 2.2.18 it's counter productive.
Until 2.2.18 (IIRC) the ATA-100 IDE patches were not integrated into the
kernel, but had to be applied seperately, which is why the behaviour has
changed, and folk say things like 'HPT370, HPT366 or Promise Ultra100' not
supported.

If you tweak, check first, I smelled a Via chipset here, and lots of ppl
have had corruption. You do backup your whole system regularly don't you?
Most ppl should trust the driver now, and not bother with hdparm, those
with Via chipsets should start searching with key words 'via and
corruption' before they do tuning. If the kernel doesn't do a good job
tuning, it's for a reason (it's not due to laziness on the drivers part).
You may find your chipset, or drive in one of the black lists.

Yes, you 'simply' backport the DRI driver to 2.2.14 from 2.4 kernel.

Yes, 'simply' add support to XFree 4 for you 'rage 128 PRO', and the kernel
DRI driver.
SuSE 6.4 have updates on their ftp site, you should upgrade your kernel,
and other stuff.
If you want kernel 2.4, and DRI etc upgrade SuSE to 7.2, either by buying
a personal edition, buying an upgrade professional, installing over ftp, or
download 7.2 from the ftp site, when it's available and install from disk.
