Saya telah menginstall package PostgreSQL (postgres ver 6.5) lewat YaST (SuSE6.3). Ada
beberapa yang ingin saya tanyakan:
- apa bedanya psql, pgsql, postgres ???
- Saya baca dokumentasinya bahwa yang menginstall postgres tersebut yang
akan menjadi administrator dari database tersebut. Sedangkan yang bisa
jalankan SuSE kan hanya superuser (root). Berarti hanya root dong yang bisa
jadi administrator dbase tersebut??
- Berikut beberapa bagian dari chapter "Setting up your environment":

If you use a variant of the Bourne shell, such as sh, ksh, or bash, then you
would add
$ PATH=/usr/local/pgsql/bin:$PATH
$ export PATH
to the .profile file in your home directory.

Saya sudah edit file tersebut, namun ketika saya jalankan perintah: createdb
mydb, muncul error berikut:
Is the postmaster running at 'localhost' and accepting connections on Unix
socket '5432'?
createdb: database creation failed on mydb.
Begitu juga kalo saya jalankan perintah: psql
Sedangkan kalo saya ketik perintah postgres muncul error berikut:
FATAL 1: InitPostgres could not validate that the database system version is
compatible with this level of Postgres.
You may need to run initdb to create a new database system.
File '/var/lib/pgsql/data/PG_VERSION' does not exist or no read permission.
