Kepada Sdr. Gatut SE Ribowo, terima kasih atas
penjelasannya.
tanggapan Sdr. Gatut dan temen 2x lainnya ??!!!
Ini artikelnya :

When Does Linux Make the Most Sense for Domino?
>From "Linux for Cynics: A Domino Perspective," by
Cameron
Hildebran, software engineer on Iris Development's
Performance Team, which originally appeared in the
July/August 2000 edition of The View,
http://www.eview.com.
When then does Linux make the most sense for Domino?
Even
with the current limitations, Linux and Domino are a
perfect fit in quite a few areas.
Cost Savings
With Linux, you don't have the same sort of
per-server,
per-user, or per-connection type of costs that are
associated with other operating systems. Depending on
the
number of servers in your infrastructure, the savings
with
Linux could be substantial.
Utilizing Legacy Hardware
Speaking of savings, everyone has at least some
legacy
hardware lying around that just can't keep up with
the
newest bells and whistles on some of the latest
operating
systems -- features that may not even be relevant to
your
operation. Linux has far fewer resource requirements
right
out of the box than other operating systems, so it
can do
the job with less hardware. Add to that the fact that
you
can reconfigure the Linux kernel to only run what is
necessary, and you can cut those resource
requirements even
further.
The configurability of Linux also allows you to
continue
utilizing older hardware in other roles. For example,
you
can resurrect older hardware to run Domino on Linux
in a
test or prototype environment. If you develop or
obtain a
new Domino application, and you want to gauge the
impact it
is going to have, you can try it out on the older
hardware
before it goes into production. This way, you can
find the
bugs or bottlenecks in the lab, not in production.
In Clustered Environments
Another great fit for Domino and Linux is in a
clustered
environment. Since Domino doesn't differentiate
between
Solaris or Windows NT or Linux at the server level,
the
underlying operating system is invisible to your
workload
and operations. This means you can add those old
Intel P90s
to your OS/2 or AIX cluster, for example--as backup,
or
dedicated to smaller tasks, they can still prove
useful.
When Linux Does Not Make Sense for Domino
There are times when Linux and Domino don't fit so
well
together -- particularly when scalability is a
requirement.
Although Linux is constantly maturing and the next
kernel
release (2.4) should allow greater performance gains,
it
will be some time before the Linux platform matches
the
scalability of high-end operating systems with
multiple
CPUs and large memory configurations.
Another case where Linux may not be the correct
Domino
answer is when you have third-party Domino
applications
that cannot operate in a Linux environment. In
general,
applications written for Domino will work on Linux
the same
as they do on another Domino platform. The exception
is
when operating-system-specific calls are made from
within
the application itself. For example, an application
that
uses MFC (Microsoft foundation classes) in some way
could
only operate in a Windows environment.
The Bottom Line
If you plan to utilize Linux in a backup or auxiliary
role,
you should have no problems. If your plan is to go
"all
Linux," you will have a reliable secure Domino
platform,
but just keep in mind the current scaling
limitations.
Linux is not yet an enterprise O/S, at least not in
the
messaging and collaboration space.

FX Eko
